MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 3

Hmm, moved my line to MWEB from Telkom. This included an upgrade from 2Mbps to 4Mbps. Picked up last night that it was now registering at 4Mbps in speed test.

Never had issue before and now suddenly this afternoon my Netflix is buffering... hopefully just coincidental?

I would expect a smoother Netflix experience with double the line speed.

I've tried the "switch router off for 10 minutes and back on" thing so let's see how that goes... :)

Evening Dubes, please do let me know how it goes.

Sometimes upgrading the line creates an unstable experience, holding thumbs that is not the case with you.

I know this might be due to shaping but my torrents and nzb download going at 0KB/s today. Normally it's going at like 20+KB/s but now it's going at 0KB/s so don't know why but tried everything.

Every now and then it connects to the NZB downloads but then going at 4KB/s. This all started yesterday. I tried rebooting router and that didn't help. so please can MWEBGUY please look into this?

Hi Nelis, Torrents and P2P gets the lowest priority and therefore speeds are not guaranteed.

Unfortunately, we are not permitted to troubleshoot issues related to torrents, due to the nature of the content.

So you're telling me that MWEB is not a good choice for my Software development company given that we use BitTorrent to download Linux iso's?

To be clear, I don't have a problem with an ISP throttling P2P during the day as it's a badly behaved protocol which takes a huge steaming dump on one's ability to manage a network but to equate all P2P users with pirates is just a little insulting, no?

I don't think its insulting at all. Our company uses bit torrents for legitimate purposes and I still associate torrenting with piracy, because the majority of torrenting is most likely piracy.

If your company (As ours does) uses torrents for legitimate purposes, we probably constitute less than 1% of all torrent traffic*.

For MWEB to suddenly allow or support P2P torrent traffic because less than 1% of its users use it legitimately doesn't make business sense.
In your case (and ours) I'd say if this is a problem, you may want to speak to an MWEB consultant about special compensation for your account with a more reasonable AUP of some variate. In business we're taught not to automate "less than 1%" situations but deal with them on an Ad-Hoc basis. I'm sure MWEB may well be able to do that for you.

*I am thumb-sucking, but its probably a reasonable assumption.

Fair enough, that's a pretty reasonable view-point.

If I'm negative it's because there appears to be a mindset in South Africa where the 1% situation is usually also not open to any kind of negotiation!

So to be fair I should probably first try asking someone at MWEB before letting my middle-age-grouch determine my expectations ;-)

Even if my torrents goes at 20KB/s during the day I will be happy cause at least it's something. For now I's at 0KB/s and that's really bad

And how do you know that? Do you have the ability to read someones mind. I never said I'm leaving mweb...

Because you would have left years ago if you knew there was anything better out there. Torrents/downloading clearly isn't your priority here.

And I personally enjoy MWEB's policy about that.

I do somewhat have the ability to read your mind, because I've seen every one of your posts in this thread over the years.

Anyway, this isn't important.

i must say this has been the first day in weeks/months that I've been shaped during the day this badly. normally I can download at about 20KB/s and still upload at 30KB/s+

Mwebguy, I am considering a new ISP and have come here to pick your brain, I know mweb throttles and that is a BIG NO NO but please provibe me a bit more info on uncapped 10mbps account.

Are torrents or video services shaped?

How would it handle gaming?

When will shaping/throttling kick in on a 10mbps account and if so how bad would it be?

Looking forward to your response.

Well well well, look who it is! ;)

Throttling is much better than shaping.

Only torrents and perhaps other forms of p2p are shaped.

haha I've been quiet because I have been happy with the account I have currently.

I am only considering getting a new ISP because I am moving in with other people and they have said they would like to share the internet.

I need to find out how much they are willing to pay though.

Torrents: yes; online video streaming: no. Gaming traffic, similar to online video streaming, receives the highest priority on our network. The download thresholds for our 10Mbps uncapped and 10Mbps uncapped premium packages are: approximately 150GB and 950GB over a 30 day rolling window, respectively.

Please PM me your contact number and I'll get someone to call you to chat about it.
