MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 3

gotta say, if the free news from Mweb is stopping, it's done for as a product. Time to start shopping round.

If they allow me to use SSL to connect to a different server after midnight without being warned of abuse I might consider staying, otherwise I'm moving my line back to Telkom next month and switching ISP's.

Doubt they will hey. Are/were you with MWEB for the news server, or other reasons?

I've been with MWEB for a long long time now and nothing they did previously, throttling and limits, bothered me in the slightest but not having access to the news server I've been using basically every day for between 3-4 years is a deal breaker for me.

Fair enough. Sorry man. :(

But if your requirements mainly revolve around a news server, then I think there's hope elsewhere.

MWeb technical have just given official statement on ridiculous port shaping

MWeb technical just called me to follow up on my complaint that port 563 SSL is being port shaped into oblivion for 75% of every day, weekends included, all of a sudden, and it's completely unacceptable.

I've just been told by them that the official statement on the matter is that we can now consider that to be the standard normal port shaping (ie. throttling) that we can expect to experience with a Premium Uncapped MWeb account if it's not also an Unshaped account.

So in other words, we are back to the good old "This is not actually an uncapped account in any way, shape or form" argument, but even worse, even their own internal 30 day limits set for Premium accounts no longer matter because if we are going to be shaped and throttled to this extent constantly then effectively the account is completely useless anyway.

I'm can't actually believe what I've just been told. This was the last thing I expected from MWeb who have always been the only ISP that have delivered what I've paid them for without minimal issues.

This is a very sad turn of events.

Hi SiliconKid

I looked into your account logs regarding your news server downloads and what the technical consultant said, "There would be Shaping on a Shaped account & if you want Unshaped you need to consider an Unshaped account"

Edit: We have always been open about our shaped services and what gets low priority on this platform.

Shaping & Throttling is two different things.

This is very bad, how can they have a 30 day limit and shape & throttle the ***** out of this im not even close to the softcap limit, ive been following the thread after the post, and i see a few people have been having issues with P2P, look @ your P2P downloads after 6pm even going all the way to 10pm, i watched again yesterday and no speed at all on any downloads even on the weekends, if they are now shaping P2P completely all the time let us know atleast that this is now part of there new T&C's.

How many people using P2P for downloads are downloading legitimate content?
IE: Who is downloading movies/series/etc illegally?

I ask this because an awful lot of people are complaining and basically all I hear is, "We can't get our illegal stuff quickly enough!".

This nonsense only started in the last 10 days or so. This is new, and was NEVER happening before, and it's extreme.

Please don't pretend like this is what's been going on all along. It is not.

I have been a firm supporter of MWeb for years and recommended them to a lot of people and now I'm looking VERY stupid as a result of this because a substantial number of people that I know are now looking for alternatives already and preparing to jump ship.

The fact is that the way your system is now suddenly behaving is completely different to how it's been behaving for years. This is a sudden and drastic change with serious implications for many of your users.

When I initially engaged with your technical department I was told that they had NO idea what was causing this and that it should not be happening on my account, on multiple different phone calls.

But today I get a phone call from them telling me something else completely. Telling me that they DO know what's causing it, it's a new enforcement of the shaping policies, and that's the way it's going to be from now on, and there is nothing that can be done about it.

So first of all, I was given misinformation, and second of all you've made a major change to the way your network is now going to behave and you didn't think it was necessary to let any of your users know ?

Great way to treat loyal customers who have spent a considerable amount of money with you over the years.

Prepare for a mass exodus of users.

I hear you SiliconKid. Since I changed to a capped account, my online gaming is impossible before 17:00, even though my speed tests show max line speed.

I find this hard to believe. Have Telkom fixed your line issue, and have you been testing since then?

Yes, the line is fixed:

Not such a popular game in SA, is it?

I'm sure MWEB Guy can let the gaming team know.

Quite a few Sefricans playing as well. Major issues with it are just the last couple of weeks. Note, over weekends I dont have any issues at all, been playing this since Oct 2012.

The reason I mentioned the other countries, is because they dont have the same issues we do.

For the last month this has been happening intermittently, but it happened pretty much the whole of today.

Many URLs will just fail to load whatsoever, and I will be unable to ping them. Eg. www.mweb.co.za or www.standardbank.co.za will load. www.google.co.za fails (and anything google related), www.mybroadband.co.za fails as well. Sites that do load will take AGES to finish loading as many of them using Google for tracking and adverts. I double checked in my Mweb Account dashboard to see if I was throttled or anything like that... nope.

I opened up an Afrihost account and connected to that. Problem solved, everything working 100%. Hop back onto my Mweb account, same problem.

I had to use my Afrihost account to post this as I obviously couldn't open the MYBB forums from my Mweb account.
