hey there mweb guy. ridiculously slow speeds right now. can't get more than 15kb/s on a 4mb line.

this sucks. also been since the afternoon.

Is seacom down again?

edit: wow it's so bad. cannot play aion. at all. plz fix guys. also mostly have internet for gaming's sake, and this is horrid.

I have exactly the same problem, max of 40 kb a second to any where if I am lucky.

Good Evening, your attenuation is way to high: ATUR Attenuation 57.8 dB Attenuation refers to resistance. If this value is high, then signal quality is low, and vice versa. Is the customer far away from the exchange? Long copper lines could be the cause of attenuation. A value above 55 dB is of concern (bad).

I have droped your line speed to 3meg; to see if that makes a difference. I have also recreated your port and recreated your account. Please reboot your router for 5 to 10 min and let me know if that helps you.

hmm. thanks for trying but you made it much worse. please set my line back to normal.

I'm aware the attenuation is a problem, but even with it being too high, which it has been for a while, my download speed hasnt been this bad. I'll have to take that problem up with telkom (kill me now), but for now other people who may not have crazy attenuation are also having the problem, so I think something else is at fault.

Good evening Anniza, you tracer shows an increase in latency on the second hop; which would normally indicate a problem closer to the remote end. Either your hardware or the Telkom line/DSLAM. Please send me a private message containing your MWEB account details and I will do a little investigation on my side.

You have only done a quick reboot; please reboot your router for more than 5 minutes. I would like to see what your experience is like after connecting with a new IP.

Also note that your DSL line is with MWEB; we can log a fault on your behalf. Please be aware that with your attenuation being so high, you will always suffer from a degraded service.

I have put your line back on 4meg, as per your request.

My line here is basically dead, nothing loads in less than minutes, even Skype keeps going on & off. Rebooted, switched to Afrihost to find the same thing. My line is with MWeb. What else can I check?

Attenuation (dB): 7 / 7
SNR Margin (dB): 30.3 / 27
Primary DNS Server: 196.28.75.200
Secondary DNS Server: 196.28.182.10

Hi MWEB Guy

I'm not able to access my ADSL modems web page as I'm on wifi at the moment.

Any chance you can share my attenuation and noise margin stats with me? I'm just curious...

Thanks

Good evening Feo, your line readings are as follow's:

Field Result Description

ATUC Current Rate 4095 kbps The current downstream speed established between the DSLAM and customer’s modem, e.g. 4096k, 512k or 384k.

ATUC SNR 18 dB The signal level compared to the noise level. A value above 6 dB indicates sufficient signal strength. The higher the signal value, the better. Does the customer have an electric fence? This could cause an increased in noise levels resulting in a reduction of this value.

ATUC Attenuation 15.3 dB Attenuation refers to resistance. If this value is high, then the signal quality is low, and vice versa. Is the customer far away from the exchange? Long copper lines could be the cause of attenuation. A value above 55 dB is of concern (bad).

ATUC Max Rate No data was returned for this query

ATUC Min Rate No data was returned for this query

ATUC Alarm State not defined. Is displayed if any faults are found on the DSLAM port.

ATUR Current Rate 507 kbps The speed at which Router communicates to remote DSLAM, e.g. 384k, 128k.

ATUR SNR 30 dB The signal level compared to the noise level. A value above 6 dB indicates sufficient signal strength. The higher the signal value, the better. Does the customer have an electric fence? This could cause an increased in noise levels resulting in a reduction of this value.

ATUR Attenuation 29 dB Attenuation refers to resistance. If this value is high, then signal quality is low, and vice versa. Is the customer far away from the exchange? Long copper lines could be the cause of attenuation. A value above 55 dB is of concern (bad).

I would love for mweb to log a fault on my behalf, because telkom customer service is enough to drive a man to absolute madness. :)

but sorry, i think i've done the reboot properly now, has the ip changed? because things are looking better now.. not quite as good as usual, but as you say it could be the attenuation. thanks for your assistance mweb guy. very helpful as usual :D

Stats look good there, thanks very much. :)

1 meg to 2.4? lol i get 0.42 five times... :O 4 meg line.

Your attenuation will affect these results; I have logged a line fault with Telkom on your behalf.

Your IP hasnt changed though...

Thanks MWeb Guy, didn't work though. Left router off for 15 mins, I don't get any connection now. DSL light on router is on

edit: and its not a PC thing. 2 laptops on wireless & a desktop on LAN

I see a router connection on my side, are you not able to connect to the internet?

ah thank you very much, hopefully they'll do something about the issue. but, may I ask so that the fault doesn't get closed prematurely, what is a healthy attenuation number?

tried the 10 minute reset again as well, hoping the IP changed now?

Below 55dB; hopefully way below that... the attenuation can be caused by erroded lines or distance from the exchange, if its the latter; there is not much they can do...
