MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Just a word of caution. It looks like Telkom is messing around with exchanges that's causing some people to experience problems with their connection.

We have a Mweb 4mb business uncapped account at work and it was performing badly for the last 3 weeks compared to running rock solid previously. After giving it time and eventually logging the fault with Mweb, Telkom was asked to check our line. Mweb could see that a lot of line errors were occurring.

I was fortunate to personally speak to the Telkom technician who said they were working on the exchanges for the last couple of weeks. Our port was changed while they were doing their work which made sense because I distinctly remember our connection going down for a minute and when it came online again everything was slow. As if someone threw a switch. Eventually they configured our port correctly and now stuff that was running slow are back to normal. Youtube for instance could not stream properly. Http downloads was terrible. Had to use a download manager and then it only downloaded at half line speed even though the line was syncing at 4mb. It had the feeling of everything being shaped.

Just using this as an example if anyone is experiencing problems.

I've been having a problem with my connection since last week. Local seems "fine" but international connection speeds are crawling. We have a up to 10meg Telkom ADSL with a 4meg Mweb uncapped account.
Speedtest.net to both London and Frankfurt shows an upload is between 0.4 and .8 (which is fine).
Downloads however are between 0.3 and 0.5Mbps.
Again, this is on a 4Mbps line syncing at around 9.2. Connection was stable before with almost no problems for the previous couple of months.

Pingtest.net shows stable ping (~200) with 1-5 jitter.

Doing a tracert to bbc.co.uk runs fine until the 11th hop where I get a '* * * Request Timed out'. After which the pings come through fine (189-210). This is a consistent pattern.

The problem is also present on a Webafrica unshaped account as well as an unshaped Afrihost account. The numbers are a little different, but again consistent for each connection.

I've already tried resetting my router multiple times, as well as keeping it off for an extented period. The pattern is exactly the same.

Is there an international outage that I'm unaware of? Or is it a physical line issue? Which would suck, because I finished a 2 month long battle with them in January to get 11 blocks of underground cables replaced... v(X_xv)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Morning Tenkun

Please see our Network notice board: http://goo.gl/282K

As you have mentioned your line readings is not good on different ISP accounts, even an unshaped 1.

The common denominator here is your line. Please provide me with your MWEB account details and I'll see if I can pick up anything.

Just a quick bit of feedback.

Three calls later and Telkom informed me that there is a problem in our area and "technicians are attending to the problem".

Just thanks again to MWEB Guy and MWEB in general. Some of the best service I've gotten in a while and my uncapped is currently outperforming two different unshaped accounts from two different ISPs!

Top marks all round!

Hi sybertiger,

We give the highest priority to video, voice and gaming traffic - so no definitely not shaped. :D

Hi MWEB Guy

I was wondering if you can help me because as of 2 weeks ago, my account has been extremely laggy with poor pings (Diablo3) after around 6pm and gets better around after 11pm.

I don't think it is the line:

SNR Margin: 26.5dB

It looks like your exchange is congested. Since you say it's at times, it's "congested at times" rather than just completely congested.

Hi harties

If you look at your 2nd hop, it is a big jump which usually points to a congestion issue.

I received your PM and will do some checks on your account.

Hi XperiAnce

Is it only with sending and can you browse the internet?

Are you currently using MWEB ADSL details in your router?

Hi Mweb Guy, it was only with sending - I am using my Mweb Details in my router. It appears to be working fine now though.
