MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Hi francoiswnel

Please can you PM me the MWEB account details to enable me to provide you more detail as to why you were disconnected.

Please note that we do have a 3 warning system in place before we disconnect our clients.

There are also ways of bypassing our shaper to ensure that you obtain line speeds when downloading, even though we might be shaping your account.

The onus is therefore on the client to ensure that they manage their account and that they comply with our AUP (acceptable usage policy).

PM sent.

If you (1) continually download (2) large amounts of (3) encrypted data on a (4) shaped (5) consumer/home-grade account, this would probably trigger the warning. MWEB does not shape encrypted traffic, so that is why this is considered a means to bypass shaping.

@copacetic: I imagine you can run unencrypted torrents all day because MWEB would be able to shape your throughput based on the prevailing network load. Continually running encrypted torrents would probably be risky... ?

I have some encryption setting enabled in utorrent, is that what we are talking about?

AFAIK, yes. Torrent clients may provide options to control whether torrent traffic should be encrytped if possible, whether it must always be encrypted, or whether encryption should never be used. Constantly downloading encrypted traffic (torrents or any other traffic) means that you are possibly "bypassing shaping".

Hi MWeb Guy

I have a 8ta contact currently. I am thinking of taking a MWEB Uncapped ADSL instead but I am worried that I am not going to get good speeds and would not get to download enough to make it worth paying double monthly.

I do web surfing during the day, 8-22h and P2P (uTorrent) downloads all night.

What kind of speeds would I get during the day and during the nights?

How does the Usage Rules work? Why would one get a letter about data abuse?

Is it a fixed term contract or can I cancel/upgrade/downgrade at any time?

Better turn that setting off then. :o

Nor have I, which is why I presumed it doesn't do anything.

I suspect (and maybe Mweb Guy can confirm), but "encrypted data" might refer to pushing torrents through a box and download it via HTTPS, which will be unshaped.

I don't use torrents, but I've never seen the encryption option increase your download speed...

On a normal connection encryption adds overhead, so it would not, but in this case the encryption can stop the shaping from working, i.e. it thinks it is something like https which is prioritized since it is on a different port and blocks any deep packet inspection.

This was always my assumption. I hope it's correct, as this is perfectly reasonable.

Hi Pienaark

I have responded to you via your Facebook post :)

Hi froot

Turning on encryption in the bitorrent client is not, running through a 3rd party seedbox / vpn torrent service is :)
