MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

If it's a completely new analogue line (not ADSL activated yet), then as per my previous post: "30 working days" to convert the line to ADSL is what a friend of mine was told by Telkom. Unless you do a "self-install", which I'm not familiar with.

sure, but i've authorised mweb now to apply on my behalf since i'm taking the all-in package. I'm somewhat hoping that would make the process a bit faster.

Hi Vlad,

The delay will be quite area dependant based on capacity/capability of your exchange. If you PM me you details I can follow up for you.

MWB.

Newshost server is still not working, im getting could not connect WTF
auth problem btw actually.

MWEB were supposed to contact me last week Thursday - but didn't - and I then emailed the person responsible for the promotion asking them to get said person to contact me, which was also ignored (also last week Thursday).... so it seems I'll have to just be happy with the free 512 account for now, and not upgrade to the 4MB at a discount.... I suppose it'll give me till the end of the month to see if the 4MB accounts are still performing before actually handing over cash, their loss :)

How do you find the 512? A couple people have had complaints in other areas. The 384 I know is pretty much as expected and 4mb seems to be holding up.

Haven't really done much with it... I was away last weekend - it seemed ok for generally browsing, youtube, etc.

I'll only really be testing it this weekend. :)

What speeds are you guys getting ATM? 4meg line and account? i am at about 280-300kbs, thought weekends are full speed.

Considering the price, surely 300kB/s is plenty fast enough for your downloads? It's amazing how we go from R500 for uncapped 384 to R500 for uncapped 4 meg and we complain because we can only really nail the line at 300kB/s constantly... even though that is almost 10 times faster than we had a few months ago at that price point!

FYI my speeds are full at the moment so either you are downloading from a "lower prioritised" Rapidshare/News Server/Torrent or its a source / local DSLAM contention issue.

I think the point is, if you pay for something thats labeled 4MB you expect 4MB, not the 1MB you get in practice.
Just like 384 can seem like dial-up these days.

Its 4Mbps maximum, not 24/7! Like the speed limit at rush hour that says 80km/h...

You have to read the fine-print, and understand the capcacity and shaping constraints. Granted, MWeb haven't been very transparent on the technical implementation (for understandable reasons).

T & C: http://www.mweb.co.za/legalpolicies/ProductsServices/ADSLTerms2010/tabid/1918/Default.aspx

"12.7 We will manage bandwidth usage to the best of our ability during peak periods, however, it remains a best effort service."

Section 12 of the MWeb Terms & Conditions is a mish-mash of limitations on user behaviour, and undertakings by the service provider. It's not exactly a cast-iron guarantee...

It's amazing how much gets swept under a "best effort" banner. Getting 56k speed on a 4mb line? Sorry, it's a best effort service.

I wonder if Best Effort is defined anywhere.

I do get the purpose and all but man it's irritating.

The OP was referring to speeds of around 300kB/s, although I take your point. I recall from years ago when we all used 56kbps dial-up modems -- Telkom only officially guaranteed the line to 9.6kbps IIRC. I would agree that 56kbps speeds on a 4mbps line would not be acceptable. I don't think there is a definition of "best effort" for obvious reasons.

Following on from my previous reply... I think that there may be the (false) expectation that a 4mbps line, for example, means that you can expect constant transfer speeds of nothing less that 400kBps, always and for ever, no matter where you are downloading from, what the other demands on the network infrastructure are, what the weather conditions are, regardless of power failures in India or fibre breakages. All I'm pointing out is that there are many points of failure and points of congestion and points of performance-loss.

As a purely trivial example: my pings to www.mybroadband.co.za are in the region of 135ms. Other users on these forums get pings as low as 11ms; that's an order of magnitude difference. I concede that a "slow" ping to a local site is not the same as slow downloads, but I'm illustrating the point that there is and always will be variance in the system, and that the expectation of maximum speeds all the time is simply unrealistic. Maybe throttling or failures are in play at the source. Maybe there is a local failure somewhere. Maybe the constant rain over the last few weeks has caused some link in the system to perform at less than optimal speed.
