MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

What does it mean? From my limited knowledge it seems high? Port was reset by MWeb on Friday.

Your SNR figures look fine. As long as your CRC errors are in single digits, you should be very happy! I'm on a 4Mbps line, and 1.8km from the exchange, so I sometimes get several hundred CRC errors per day.

I've now wasted days on this problem. There seems no solution  Man I'm fed-up :(

Edit: Time to stop banging your head against a wall, and do something different...

Try reading this story about Europe, a place without airplanes (due to the volcanic ash)!

Called Telkom to reset the line. They say the 41.5 dB is "fine". Speedtest a few weeks ago gave me 38kBps. Tested now and got between 29 and 32kBps :( Confirmed; downloads are now only running at 30 to 32kBps. Earlier today they were at 38 :(

They still stall after a period of time and won't resume :( :( :(

Do you run a Anti-virus? Do you have a local proxy server? Using Wget, can you resume failed downloads using https?

No antivirus and no local proxy server. Can't resume with wget on normal http. Will need to find an https download link to test ... gimme 5.

Resuming https works; resuming http fails

Found an https link to a file. Started it with wget. Stopped it. Resumed it fine. Stopped it again. Resumed fine. File downloaded to completion.

Started an mp3 podcast download over normal http. Stopped it. Tried to resume it. It won't resume. Go figure.

What does this mean? I'm so sure it's a proxy issue somewhere! Secure connections are never proxied or cached. Unsecure connections are. This has to be related somehow. I'm not running any proxies locally.

This is driving me insane.

So I just topped up with a standard Capped shaped account with AH and what took 48 minutes of repeated stalled downloads was just done in 9 minutes.

Just tried again with MW uncapped account and it failed again, this time at 57%.

Still rocking I guess?

Well, I now understand what they meant by saying, never drive without a spare tyre :erm:

Looks like it is going to be needed.

Well my experience has been amazing so far....strange....

Download Stall: SSH

Explain this. As everyone on this thread now knows, I am not able to download files reliably over http as they keep stalling :)

If I connect via SSH to a server I have across town, I can download a file on that machine without any problems. The server is not connected via MWeb. So that's fine -- I can get a file there no problem.

Here's the point: I can then transfer the file from that machine to my home machine via SCP (SSH secure file copy) without a problem. The entire file downloads to completion. It does not stall.

Tell me again why it's not a proxy / caching issue?

Well it does appear to be a proxy issue. But why is it only affecting you?

Do you get different answers from these, or any mention of a proxy server?

For what it is worth, I also experienced the stalled downloads.

Also found my Mega 200VWR to be very slow to update changes of account login details, not normal.

So I decided to reset the Router, ie. hold the Reset Button at back of router for around 8 seconds to completely restore the router to factory defaults.

It now seems to be much more responsive, I restored from the backup.icf file and now it is back to the settings I had before.

NB! You can Backup your settings on the router to a settings.icf file on onto your PC.

Not getting the stalled downloads anymore as I re-downloaded the same files I had issues with last night and they literally flew down in seven minutes each :)

Seems fixed for me right now and using Free Download Manager does the trick.

Uninstalled Firefox download manager and using FDM exclusively :)

Thanks for reminding me. I was considering doing a hard reset and a restore, but after experiencing the same stalling problems with a different router/account I eliminated the router as the problem. I'm prepared to try anything. Back in a few ... :)

@Astound: Sadly, no, the hard reset did not solve the problem. A 13MB download just stalled after 1.8MB. I'm at the end of my tether with this issue now ... :(

Only MP3 files are stalling

I've just downloaded -- at the line maximum of 39,5kBps -- a 43MB .deb (Debian install package file) file over http to completion, without a problem.

I started it less than five minutes after a 13MB mp3 file stalled at 1.8MB and would not resume. I still cannot download that, and other, mp3 files over plain http.

I tried the 13MB mp3 again after the 43MB .deb had completed -- it stalled at 1.8MB. I tried another MP3 I've not tried before. It stalled.

I downloaded a 10MB Flash Video earlier without a problem. This has GOT to be a shaping/proxy/cache misconfiguration somewhere, somehow, or some kind of packet/content inspection?

After days of fighting this issue, I can confirm that HTTP downloads of MP3 files of at least 3MB will stall at some random point and cannot be resumed.

I'm now exhausted and still frustrated and I've wasted so much time on this.

If I signup now, will the rest of the month be billed at pro-rata? Is this ammount caculated daily, or weekely?

IIRC MWeb's version of pro-rata is that a sign-up any time after the 15th is charged 50%.

Download Stalling: Assistance Please

Posted to the "MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q&A" thread and to the "MWEB Uncapped Subscribers Feedback" thread. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

The MWeb rep. on the official thread is assisting me with this problem and I have reported it telephonically to MWeb technical support. In the interests of getting other opinions and assistance, I'm posting here too.

Browsing, email and audio streaming on my uncapped 384kbps line work perfectly. I am not running any local proxies, firewalls or anti-virus software. Downloads of large (tens of megabytes) files (.deb and .tar.bz2 for example) complete successfully, downloading at full speed of 38kBps. Any files downloaded over SSH, SCP or from HTTPS sites complete successfully. The few flash videos I have tested have downloaded successfully.

Since the evening of Wednesday 14 April 2010, all HTTP downloads of MP3 files (podcasts, not music, but of course this makes no difference) from local and international sites stall, do not resume and eventually fail before completing. They download at full speed of 38kBps before they stall. They do not always stall at the same place, but often they do.

These downloads fail to complete on two wired desktops (Ubuntu Linux, using wget and Firefox) and two wireless laptops (Vista, using Chrome and Internet Explorer). They also fail on Windows XP (Internet Explorer) inside a VirtualBox virtual machine on one of the desktop machines. Very small MP3 files (less than 3MB) have all downloaded successfully. Files of 6MB or larger fail.

I have examined logs from wget and from the console version of WireShark, but these have not been helpful. On occassion, wget reports "connection reset by peer". The Vista machine reported that the "connection has been reset". These errors are only reported occassionally. Most times, the download simply stops at 0kBps and does not continue. The multitheaded console downloader 'aria2' was also unable to completely download files. It reported time-outs and eventually terminated the download. I've tested many different files with the various programs on many occasions. All downloads run at 38kBps before stopping.

Downloads also fail on my line when using a different router and username login. They do not fail with my router and username on a line at a different location.

I have hard-reset my router twice and tested with default settings as well as with my restored settings. My line/port has been reset twice in the last few days and Telkom reports that the line is working correctly.

I am left with no conclusion other than that the problem exists upstream of my router. That means my line or a proxy server, a caching server or a shaping server.

Any suggestions welcome. I've completely and utterly exhausted my options.
