MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

It appears routing goes via VIC/NDF and then back to CTN if I trace to www.iol.co.za which is a local site right here in CTN.
Hi bradlesliect,

Yes our IPConnect links are in JHB. Current Telkom pricing makes it uneconomical to run multiple IPC links dispersed georaphically, so the location was chosen based on greatest customer density. We hope the future IPStream achitecture will change this situation.

MWB.

Still have not heard or recieved anything from both the signup and email I sent, and I signed up on the 1st April. >_>
Hi Eliphas,

I'm sure you will be contacted in the morning (today being a public holiday). If you PM me your contact details I'll try to see if I can expedite.

MWB.

Ditto

How many of the posters to this thread are from the Western Cape region and are having the same problem as me and some others down here in CT?

MWEB Rep - How does MWEB route international traffic from CTN? Via Victory Park(VIC) / New Doornfontein(NDF) and then out or do you have network blocks being routed differently depending on the source block? It appears routing goes via VIC/NDF and then back to CTN if I trace to www.iol.co.za which is a local site right here in CTN. Does this not cause unecessary latency and duplicate routes? I can see this if I use visual route to trace, ping and plot the route as well.

I think this is/may be the cause of some of the problems I am experiencing ...but...as said before, it may only be me. Any other Western Cape users having same problem?

Ditto for me...same issues here

Hi MWEB,

Thanks for YOUR concern- no sarcasm intended - but all I want is for an ISP to deliver on the service they promised, keep in touch with your clients and provide feedback re outages, problems, etc.

Could you finally admit there is a problem and that is not started in the last 24hrs? tell me how I/we can help you in delivering excellent service? This is where I admire WA, the test, test, test and then test again before unleashing to all users.

have a look at the traceroute below...and this is with nothing currently happening on my line. What's up with this? Even connecting to your news server is extremely slow and some times non existent.

Everyone's getting traceroute results of 11 to 37ms. I get 135ms. bradlesliect gets even higher values (480ms I think).

Well then I can say that im truly happy with mweb uncapped account. Lets hope that a) this lasts and b) there are no surprises with the AUP :)

Hi SabreWolfy,

Some local factors that may be causing your high latency (while line is idle) ...

- Local setup/environment - switch/router cfg & ADSL chipset used, cabling/WiFi quality, PC card drivers etc.
- ADSL local loop - copper quality & DSLAM make/model will affect sync speed/stability and error count

Other influencing factors that are under Telkom's control ...

- Local exchange uplink capacity, regional concentrator load (ESR) , inter-region transit congestion

MWB.

Mweb, why is it so painfully slow uploading files to a website via ftp? Took the better part of an hour to upload a 12MB mp3 file last week. It was NEVER that slow on any capped account I ever used. I could always just use my 3G connection for this (it's MILES faster) but I'd prefer not to.

Yeah, thanks for the reply. I'm happy with the service I'm getting, so a few extra ms is not a problem :)

I see a pattern here.... the last few nights from about 8ish up to about 10:30ish downloading kinda flies along and then all of a sudden from about 11ish ...everythng slows down again...

Like I said previously, i also used a Cisco ADSL router and my results have been the same too. not sure if it counts for anything.

@MWEB - dont u make use of any Peering links? CINX / JINX? won't it sort out any congestion and/or latency issues?

Hi Eliphas,

I'm sure you will be contacted in the morning (today being a public holiday). If you PM me your contact details I'll try to see if I can expedite.

Yeah I understand that it was a public holiday. If I don't hear you guys by tommorow I shall PM you. :]

Hi bradlesliect,

This will have no bearing on your local latency (on the ADSL access network to MWEB's IPC links). If you PM me your IOS cfg & "sh dsl int atm0" I can take a look to see if your issue lies anywhere there.

MWB.

Hi Rodent-Boy,

As mentioned in the above post there could be many local factors influencing your upload speeds. But of most importance will be the target server itself, its performance and the performance of all the intermediate links between you and it. If you can provide an IP/dns name I can take a look.

PS: What are your ADSL line & MWEB package speeds?

MWB.
