MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

My downloads go as fast as 400KB/sec in the evening. Haven't tried daytime. Overall the MWEB service is excellent. Hopefully MWEB can continue this uncapped offering.

Downloaded about 55GB so far this month.

Ok, I got connected on Tuesday evening. It all started ok and I had a 512Kbps line and getting around 450Kbps.

Last night I noticed that my speeds dropped but as it was 8pm so I thought the shpaed network was still in place. This morning I looked at the graph on my router and it shows 250Kbps - 300Kbs from 23:00 -> 08:00 and then it dropped to 150Kbps.

These speeds are quite disspapointing especially taking into account after hours (maybe the whole of SA is on MWEB and everyone else that hasn't had innternet are now signing up)

My other complaint is that my rapidshare is very much limited, I have a paid account which allows me full line speed and since joining MWEB rapidshare does not go over 160Kbps, it spikes to full bandwidth but then droppes right back down again.

Currently I'm hoping that their network is just congested and thus limits are in place but I would really expect them to be buying some additional capacity pronto.

512k line and 450KB? That's good.

what you talking about, its impossible to get 450KB on 512 line or package

But it's not impossible (in fact, it's very good) to get 450kb on a 512kb(ps) line -- 450 kilo BITS. Assuming this is what the OP meant.

Outgoing Email Always Slow

Is it my imagination, or is sending email *much* slower on uncapped accounts? It takes up to 30 seconds to send a short email or an email with a tiny (40kb) attachment. Anyone else experiencing this consistently?

OK, just in case anyone else is interested.

I have been trying to get confirmation from MWEB whether the uncapped accounts will work over Telkom Wimax.
I have just connected now with my home account, and it works fine.

nice, hows the speeds??

Well, I was using a 384 account over 512 Wimax, but I was getting mid-50'ish pings, download of 410kbps - not bad actually considering it is throttled to 384.
Will post more results when the 512 account is activated.

i've been looking through the forum but haven't found the answer to this question: if i sign up for a new adsl line (inclusive package) how long does it take to get up and running? i'm guessing the telkom application can take awhile? Any rough ideas?

Depends what you have at the moment. My understanding is that it can take "up to 30 working days" to convert an existing analogue installation to ADSL.

My additional jack took 19 days to install (had to install that and process the order before I could even order the ADSL line conversion, you can't have 2 orders pending), plus another one to for the tech to clear the order. Then I could place the ADSL order and that was completed today (34 days later!!), they claimed it got stuck between 2 "systems"

I wonder if some one could confirm if this is normal with the Mweb 4MB uncapped, it's now 10:20PM and I'm downloading torrents at around 100-150KB/s, although the speed is inconstant and fluctuates up and down the whole time. All 3 torrents have 100-200 seeders. Wondering if the speed will pick up or if this is what I can expect as pretty much average.

No fluctuations here, im getting a constant 100KB on my one torrent, and 50 respectively on the others ( i am limiting those )

thanks Semphore, strange mine is jumping around like crazy, just dropped down to 50KB before it started climbing slowly again. Wonder if Telkom is still playing with our lines over here.

it's a completely new line...

If it's a completely new analogue line (not ADSL activated yet), then as per my previous post: "30 working days" to convert the line to ADSL is what a friend of mine was told by Telkom. Unless you do a "self-install", which I'm not familiar with.
