MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

MWEB, is it at all possible to 4MB speeds from the free 512 account? I have a 4MB line, but am currently on your free 512 account (cause you guys never got back to me about the upgrade) - but I started testing newsgroups today, and it claims to be downloading at 400kB/s... ? I don't really want to steal bandwidth I'm not entitled too.

Was it just me, or was the Mweb news server unshaped today, at least on cached content? I was going 420KB/s and all my downloads were done in a flash this morning. If you are using Astraweb, it is definitely worth adding the Mweb news server to your client. Just don't use it for very old nzbs.
.

Tried it on both Astraweb and Mweb news - still running around 80 kbs. Also experimented with both old and new NZBs

OMG @ all the PMs!

Ok firstly it only works for usenet (sorry rapidshare and torrent people), and secondly you need to purchase an account from a usenet provider (between $10 for 60GB - $20 for unlimited).

If you guys are wiling to do that then PM me. Unfortunately right now I'm only going to reply to the first 10 people, as I don't want this to end up shaped too. Depending on how MWEBs upgrades are progressing I'll reply to more :) You'll need to have a real aptitude for usenet though, so please don't PM if you're a noob.

And no I'm not BSing - here are some test results. The first one is my home line (512k) and the second is my work line (4meg). Both were done just after lunch (the first was yesterday and the second was today) when the shaping is at its worst.

Mine is also crawling at 7KB/s on a 384 line from both astraweb or the mweb news server.

lol, think mweb has finally died, torrents are crawling, news server connects and disconnects wats up??

Will be sending out a PM to:
gdiza
CodeMaster
Natedogg
silkman
Tjoker
absk300
farimir

3 spots left, not accepting any more after tonight. If you don't receive your PM soon then don't panic as it's a lengthy post, so will take a while to find time to type it. You should have it by Saturday at the latest.

Also note that Astraweb accounts won't work, but don't get rid of them just yet until we receive feedback on Mwebs upgrade. This is just a temporary workaround, so you'll need to fork out a little on another provider. Fortunately this provider's accounts don't auto-renew, so you can buy 1, 3, 6 or 12 months access.

Just buy a VPN account somewhere. Much less of a hassle!!

Hi MWeb

I'd like to rephrase my earlier question:
We all understand shaping but, what can we reasonably expect on the low priority connections?

10% of full speed? 20%? 50%? 80%? At what time of the day?

I understand that you can not commit to a precise figure but your company is selling a product and customers can expect an answer as to what figures you are aiming at. Slower than dial-up, as it has been today, is not really acceptable.

Thanks
