I get thats its shaped, I'm the biggest advocate for that fact... but shaped to death is not okay. I'm trying to steam now, and well... why bother at speeds like that?

Again,It's not 0...it's friday, people are tossing about at work on HTTP,you get shaped on p2p even more than usual. You signed up for this. HAI

PsyWulf, why don't you go and be unhelpful somewhere else.

While your mouth is running why don't you blow a homeless person, clearly you enjoy spreading the love

If it's business unshaped uncapped and the protocols are degraded its a problem,if it's a normal cheapie account shut your faces till 8pm. Absolutely had enough of "moomoomooQQQQ my cheap account can't download internets fast enough" using protocols that are warned to be shaped with the possibility of being shaped to hell dependant on network loads. Newsflash, the more people sign up - the more the shaping will become till MWeb upgrades their pipes or limits downloaders some other way

I havent discoed once since I connected. That never happened on any other account. Have you folks checked your exchanges? With telkom planning the new rollout maybe they're busy upgrading and its affecting?

+1

And this? Which isn't shaped? I fear my complaints are justified:

hambone - I get similar results during business hours on my MWEB uncapped account, but I also get similar results with capped ADSL accounts from 3 other ISPs, two of which are unshaped. So I believe that the poor speedtest.net results we get has got less to do with shaping and more to do with the fact that Telkom's ADSL network infrastructure has insufficient bandwidth in certain areas. I know that shaping also plays a role but in the case of speedtest.net tests I believe the problem lies with Telkom as my tests with 4 different ISP indicate.

Hi MWEB Guy.

I upgraded my email only account online at around 9AM to a 384k Uncapped account. When can I expect to hear that my upgrade was successful?

I have not yet submitted my ID for RICA.

edit: dealt with on the Facebook page. Thanks :)

Can you show us where it says this please?

How come MWEB has made at least one particular website (Rapidshare) so slow it's almost unusable. We shouldn't accept a situation where our ISP decides how and when we visit a particular site. That they do in China ffs. What else will they block?

I also see MWEB taking full advantage of their tricks and coming out with a new product for more money. So they impose an artificial speed-bump and then charge more for removing it. Just wait and see!

I think it's fairly obvious. If left unchecked, Rapidshare and Megaupload traffic would generate a huge load, and average users (who outnumber the large downloaders) would be affected.

You can achieve a big load by downloading anything. If we all click update on any Adobe package it would do the same. MWEB have realised that people would use something that affected their cap and throttled it without declaring when or by how much. In fact they mislead us by saying after-hours which in reality is "whenever we feel like it". The average user would assume after-hours is around 6pm and that all contentious download venues would be normal after that time. Even on weekends at 3am in the morning things are not normal.

If you are happy with that situation, then fine. However many people signed up believing the words of the CEO. If MWEB wants to change the terms ala AfriHost, then they are doing it after they have our money. It may be the 'best' of the bunch, but that still doesn't make it right.

Shaping means that the network is monitored and managed to ensure that those using the more commonly essential things, like email and web browsing, have priority over those using P2P services such as Bittorrent. This is typically done during peak hours and not when things are quieter.
Business packages will be unshaped (no priority will be given to certain protocols and activities) and unthrottled. On consumer accounts there will be shaping – that is, priority will be given to some traffic if there is a danger of isolated behaviour or abuse affecting the overall user experience. MWEB will prioritise what most of our user base engages in, including browsing and email, as opposed to peer-to-peer activity. We encourage power users to schedule their activities during off-peak times, which is a good practical way of balancing usage of the network across the day.
No shaping rules do not change, however the traffic load genrated by the priority protocols on the network will change during different times of the day. Non-priorty protocols (such as P2P) will perform much better during off peak times when the network has excess capacity.

TL : DR
The busier little bees get with priority traffic the worse off your unprioritized would get

When they started the uncapped the normal business hours was normal business hours, by 19:00 we were flying full speed, since last week it became bad but today it is a joke.

I'd like to pick out some of your quotes, though you don't mention where in the MWEB Web page Terms it says these things?? (link?).

  1. In reality MWEB are throttling nearly all the time. Just try it at 2 in the morning.
  2. There is no predictability about when they implement it.
  3. Nobody wants to provide times or even estimated times.
  4. MWEB said their product was "ideal for games", and then when we tested it, they removed that
    from their website.
  5. Ideal for video steaming. Oh yeah! Anyone tried YouTube on 384?

As discussed repeatedly in this thread, shaping of services is done by ISPs around the world and is standard practice. Read the Terms and Conditions. If they DIDN'T shape, no-one would be able to browse or get email. THEN imagine the complaints.
