Smooth criminal is the new MWEB guy!

Stop posting stuff on HIS website that he owns, mybroadband.co.za

OR

be called a *gasp* moaner!!!!

Tanya - Can you point around which points MWeb has misled people?

MWeb, this is your thread. There are a lot of people politely asking reasonable questions and 2 idiots wasting everyone's bandwidth. Can you ban them please, you know who they are.

Off-peak generally means out of business hours. Businesses are VAST uses of bandwidth.

I think that a few years ago there were more business users than home users, so evening and weekends used to be quieter. With cheaper ADSL the ratio seems to have switched, and there is no such thing as 'off-peak' any more.

Posted my comment earlier in this thread. I don't know the exact figures, but a million(?) home ADSL users must be using more bandwidth than they did a few years ago using dial-up!

Mweb 12 hours and only 114mb downloaded dammit man when is the speeds gonna be sorted.....

There does seem to be a rather large amount of network contention int the Durban area.....

Not getting such great speeds atm... :(

tut tut, what to do... put in my one month cancellation to Afrihost and signed up with MWeb, been doing a speed comparison on downloads from Astraweb and so far Afrihost is kicking butt

Anything from 3kbps~16Kbps using Mweb and 45~60kbps on Afrihost, tis crazy I just left them for Mweb. The last two days on Afrihost have not been bad strangely enough... wonder if they sorting stuff out that side?

You can't make any decisions using a sample size of 2 days. You need to compare the two service providers over at least week of similar usage patterns at similar times to be able to objectively compare the two.

Going at a steady 445KB/sec here.

Downloads Stop

I've been experiencing the following problem for the last few days. Downloads from various different HTTP sites (mp3 podcasts) are arbitrarily stopping, but not timing out. The download starts fine and downloads without any problems for 50% or 70% or whatever, until a point where the rate simply drops to 0kbps. It does not terminate or timeout. Any ideas? I've experienced this on several different local and international sites.

Going Pear-Shaped

A podcast mp3 downloaded over an SSH connection does NOT stop, but all the ones I've tried yesterday and today, from two different machines on the same router, over a standard HTTP connection from different sites (local and international) are ALL stopping at some random point. They download at maximum speed until a point and then stop dead, but don't timeout. I can't believe it's a shaping issue on a Friday evening? Browsing and YouTube seem to be fine. Seriously

Same here, dropped afrihost on the 15th and got mweb... Afrihost I miss you, but its too late for me to turn back now, literally.

I have to wait 4min to load 18seconds on a stream from megavideo... Mweb shapes so much its impossible to actually use your internet well, its more of a 56k modem than a 512kb/s account.

Torrents going at 0.5kb/s right now and heres a trace route:

I've had some slow connections, but nothing like you describe. It sounds specific to your system, if its happening on several sites. Just a thought: Perhaps your browser cache is full (or something silly like that)?

I can concurr that this also happens to me, eg. pulling down a BlackBerry Hybrid OS also just stops, speeds gradually slow down to 0 KB/s and stops, no time out.

If the download is resumable then pausing and resuming gets it going again till the next time. If it does not support resume, forget it, you will have to start from scratch.

By the way this was at 2h00 last night, so I just gave up. Also finding mybb site also slow to load sometimes, you have to stop and refresh, maybe due to the transparent proxy they run?

Not such a big issue for me though, still worthwhile service for the price :)

I'm downloading via 'wget' on the command-line, so no cache. Just tested again downloading at a speed slower than my line, just to see if I was being penalized for "maxing" out the line. Nope. Cruised at 24Kbps and then after 17MB the download did this:

17,743,428 --.-K/s eta 1m 42s

Speed drops to zero and there it sits. Trying to resume, which has worked before, results in 'wget' hanging on "HTTP request sent, awaiting response..."

Something, somewhere, is SERIOUSLY broken.

Restarting router and both computers. Why THAT should work when browsing and YouTube are fine, but downloads are stopping at random points, I have no idea, but what else is there? :)

17,608,908 --.-K/s eta 91s

Pulling down 43MB .deb file to test if other files are stalling:

2,809,080 --.-K/s eta 26m 6s

:wtf:

The .deb did resume though. 'wget' reported "Connection reset by peer" ... ?
