What do you consider reasonable shaping on non-priority downloads on a 384 connection?
I think we all agree that less than dialup speed is unacceptable. So what should it be?
It’s a fair question from paying customers.
Hi Playing,

As mentioned before this is currently under investigation. We will be looking for a more equitable balance between low & high throughput connections during times of peak congestion (of the non-pri BW pool).

MWB.

Make a pool of the guys that hit high Gig numbers the previous month, ie 100-400Gb, and let them fight it out. For a guy who does 10Gb or 20Gb over a month, he should not suffer even if he is using "non-priority" proto.

Hi Mweb,

When does P2P shaping take place?

And at what hour or time does the shaping become less restrictive or allow full 4mbps speeds for P2P?

Thanks

Shaping is done dynamically, so there is no fixed time, and it also depends on capcacity vs demand.

The short answer is that any time a 'normal' person is awake, the network will be busy.

MWeb doesn't disclose their traffic, but if you look at a 24 hour data graph from the JINX (Joburg Network Exchange), you will see that between 00h00 and 06h00 (weekdays) to 08h00 (weekends) is usually the best time:

Is the Mweb DNS 196.28.80.140/139
My connection seems to be stuttering at the moment aswell. Basically the wireless and dsl lights are stable but the internet light is flickering constantly. Any Ideas on the cause? It happened on Afrihost too but not on Nashua.

TIA

I'm curious, what's stopping MWEB from oversubscribing and as a result throttling (SHAPING) everything under the sun heavily except for basic text HTML?

Youtube is basically unusable on my mweb 4mb uncapped account. I've had it a day and Youtube videos load slower than they did on my 384 capped line.

my astranews is coming down at 300kB/s. I would be surprised if youtube is worse.

nothing. except for for people leaving them.

Apologies for cross/re/posting, but this is driving me crazy and I need to determine if anyone else is experiencing this.

Since Wednesday, all mp3 podcast downloads (and other "large" files I think) all stall after several MB at 0kbps and never finish; they all download at 38Kbps until they stall at 0kbps. I've tried on different computers and from different sites; all downloads are standard HTTP, not P2P or torrent or anything like that. I've reset router and restarted computers and called Tech Support who reset the port, checked DNS on router etc.

Browsing, email, streaming is all fine. Any "large" file download just stalls after several MB and cannot be resumed. I download via command-line 'wget' (so no browser cache) but the same problem happens via Firefox. I have no proxies or anti-virus running. Before Wednesday evening, all downloads were running fine. Trying to resume with 'wget' hangs sending the HTTP request, despite the fact that starting the download from scratch works. Sometimes 'wget' reports Connection reset by peer or Connection timed out, despite downloading at 38Kbps.

I've downloaded one of the 'problem' files via my AlwaysOn/MWeb 5 hours wireless access and it downloads to completion so the file itself is fine at the source.

Downloaded a mp3 podcast over an SSH connection works fine -- it downloads to completion.

It seems as though there is something wrong with some transparent HTTP proxy somewhere? Tech support said I was the first call about this issue though...

I also regullary have the same problem, but for me the downloads just totally 'finish' incomplete. I particallary seem to have it in the weekends. Streaming and browsing just continue like normal, but HTTP downloads fail constantly at random times.

Ek sukkel vanaand ook nogal om n 192kbps radiostroom te luister. Ek is op 384kbps.

<skip>

I would recommend you get a download manager.. Such as flash get or download them all.. both have/are plug-ins for Firefox. I find they help to ensure the file is fully downloaded

Me too. I only have a 512k line but have always been able to download utube etc. no problem with videodownloadhelper using the standard firefox downloader, but now have to manually copy the url stream to downthemall or 9/10 times the file will stall after just a few mb. It's stupid 'coz it's a waste of time & bandwidth for both parties & more hassle for me to go & have to rename the files afterwards (since downthemall often just calls them 'videoplayback' -with no filetype extension).

DownThemAll! extension will be able to resume with most streaming sites, but not all. I've had a few files reach a high %, stall & then have to resume from 0%.

OK, so it is a Saturday night, or rather very early on a Sunday morning, ie. 02h16 check post time and http download is being throttled to zero, from 130KB/s to 0KB/s for the sixth time and cannot be resumed after failure.

Time to top up again with Capped account, since uncapped falling apart at the seams.
