Hello everyone

I'm in the process of upgrading my line to a 1mb line and i'm not sure which of the two to choose, either mweb 1mb uncapped or openweb gold 1mb uncapped.
I'm currently on cybersmart and will be keeping the cybersmart backbone for the meanwhile.
Most of my downloads are done via torrents and i would like to know the speeds the two ISP's provide on torrenting.
with a cybersmart backbone will i be able to download via news groups once i have changed over to one of the two ISP's.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I would start with mweb account only option. If it works for you then keep it if it doesn't then move to gold.

Sent from my GT-I9000 using MyBroadband Android App

so the R100 extra for gold compared to mweb is worth it.

It depends on the use i would say, if you want to download 24/7 don't get mweb because they will send a letter and cancel your account.

Mweb also throttle the line as a whole to stop abuse so you may find your 1 meg line will not actually give you 1 meg, with openweb you can change providers if there are problems. At the moment sadly mweb does not know what they are doing in terms of throttling so they just nail your whole line to make sure you are not abusing the network.

Ask mrbeep for a test account, i think the extra money is well worth it because there is nothing worse than having half your line gone due to throttling and shaping.

im on mweb uncapped 1mb, frustrated as hell. today is sunday 3 july 18.11pm, my downloads are running at a whopping 15kbps instead of 100kbps when i first signed up. i would like to give openweb gold a try, any users on gold, how are daytime browsing speeds so far?

Hi Ken,

I have been with openweb gold and mweb. Unfortunately on the 4mbps line speed, so I can't really comment on 1mbps.

What I can comment on is the difference in the speeds and how the network shaping was handled... Openweb and Keoma are in the fight for TRUE uncapped and in general the latency and speeds were much better than mweb. Not always for gaming but the amount of shaping is MUCH less than on mweb. For torrents I would reccomend using the IS backbone however...

Hope that helps.

Im using Mweb 4MB uncapped and you can see they are slowly but surely shaping everybody to a certain speed. My whole weekend was throttled too DEATH! Heres hoping they pick up their act this week

Dude my feelings are they will not pick up their act in a good way, slowly but surely they are limiting more and more. Gradual thing and instead of being honest they keep asking us to pm them when they know exactly what the problem is.

Dude. It's futile. I noticed a MASSIVE difference moving to GOLD, just in BROWSING. Never mind everything else. Seriously. GTFO.

Openweb Gold FTW...don't waste your time with MWEB over a R100 odd - its not worth the hassle.

I've got a question regarding the openweb gold 1mbps plus...

What is the upload speed on that account? Is it throttled to 0.256mbps or is it the full 0.512mbps?

I may be interested in moving back to openweb if their upload speed isn't throttled to .256...

Anyone know?

It's the full 512k.

IS and very happy.

Cool. The only problem I have with IS is the high latency to cpt... The reason for this is that they don't have local peering points in cpt. So my data travels to jhb, then back to cpt in order to connect to a cpt hosted server. So in effect, my latency is higher in cpt than it is in jhb. I had this issue with the 4mbps gold account a few months back. I assume that IS hasn't got peering points in cpt yet.
:(
