My guess is that MWEB will be completely doing away with capped accounts. They will migrate all current capped accounts to uncapped, and hence free the web. They will also drop their uncapped pricing so that
- their pricing is more in line with that of other ISPs (who resell IS packages)
- they can better "sell the idea" of migrating its capped user base to uncapped at a slightly higher price
I think this is the most logical (and important) thing that ISPs need to start doing. It's no use selling uncapped accounts to high-end users, and capped accounts to low-end users. You're shooting yourself in the foot by doing this. You want to have everybody sharing the same pool of bandwidth, and paying the same price, even though usage patterns are different. Hence, low end users will subsidize high-end users, but low-end users will still feel that they are getting a great deal, going from a 3GB capped account to uncapped, at a slightly higher price.
This would be great news, and would force Telkom to re-launch all it's packages as uncapped (OK who am I kidding, everyone knows Telkom can't be forced to do anything, not even by the strong arm of the law). This would in turn force all other ISPs to drop capped accounts altogether, and revolutionise the entire industry.
In 6 months time, there will be no such thing as a cap, except
- for Wireless users (iBurst, Wimax, 3G/HSDPA, etc)
- for WebAfrica subscribers, since it is unsustainable
- the type you put on your head
