MWEB Uncapped - something big might be happening tomorrow!

This was actually such an EPIC fail , just thought about it .... why would NASPERS use MWEB to relaunch an old product ? Simple mweb is now being seen as the "good guy" , and they now have a better market share than before , people have softened up to them because of the uncapped adsl , but that is not the same with DSTV . In fact it is the opposite , we have not choice but to like them , we certainly cant leave ..... ETV ? Sabc 1,2 and 3 ? I think not .

So it uses its most people friendly and most effective marketing/brand name ... Mweb to sell this . Had DSTV came forth and tried to sell this product , we would have told them to %%%% off , straight away , and we might have all been fooled into thinking , shame DSTV drags poor mweb down with it . Since MWEB made the announcement however it caused a large stir amongst the internet folk , yet we are handed this . It was a good try , but even if you shine a turd , it is still a turd , sorry .

Dstv now finally has lost its strangle hold on market in SA , TopTv , and now the new one online from next month will be the wakeup call that they need ! With people moving over , they will have NOCHOICE ( :) ) , but to give the subscribers what they want , or just to rename themselves to DSTV supersport , one of the only reasons many of us have dstv anyway .

I wan't to know from MWEB if some "crazy" people love this service and make use of it are we going to suffer even more with less BW and cr@**y speeds? If this becomes the case I am outta here!!!

I've wondered this myself and I'm sure they would have anticipated this. They did mention recently that they had just/were expecting upgrades to local bandwidth capacity. The on-demand service is not shaped, so it will get priority.
 
On demand means what? I thought I would be able to choose the channels on DSTv and only pay for those--but no, I was wrong. Just making us re-watch reruns (again), but now online. I told you so, I was prepared for this cr@p! I am now getting hemorrhoids!
 
It is a good product and a good service, something which is becoming popular in the first world... For free!

However, their target market and their selling points seem totally out of whack.... If I understand it correctly, this is free for those who have the top end DSTV package already... Who pay +- R600 a month and have their PVR... But Mwebs last post said this was targeted at those "less tech savvy that dont have PVRs"... Have I missed something?

This is a very useful service for those for arent tech savvy and dont have PVRs, absolutely it is... if they already wont pay an extra R200 for the high end DSTV package, they're not going to pay a premium for this service... So how does Mweb intend to market this to them? On the other side, those who pay R600 for their top end packages with their PVRs, have already gotten used to setting up recordings of their favorite shows... So how does Mweb intend to market this to them??

So the strategic thinking seems to be failing here.
 
@ MWEB I would like to know how this service is going to effect your uncapped accounts in terms of speed? We all agree the shaping some days really results in SLOW SLOOWWWW internet. Is this just going to further reduce the available BW pool or is this local BW so it will have no effect on current speeds? Please comment...

They say they will add the streaming to their priority list. I hope they have capacity or will they throttle something else to compensate? I wonder?

Listen to your customers! That's all we ever wanted. You are not listening. You are ahead in the game as at the moment your adsl service is better than the other offerings. That will not be the case forever! Look at what happened to Afrihost, you are heading there fast. Most people want less shaping, cheaper bandwidth. Concentrate your efforts there to bring better value to customers, this will keep competition away for longer and build loyalty. DSTV has taken a lot of flack for overcharging and not offering value, how can you think that partnering with them and not offering anything new will bring value to customers or make them happy. You must seriously be stupid. The MyBB community is very powerful, do not underestimate them or your customers. If you were to offer at least a discount on the price of DSTV on Demand service it would have been much better received.

whahaha, as if!! DSTV tasted the good life and profits. They will BS Joe Public with cheapo no real content channels just so they can say but look, we do have cheap options available.
 
lol, look before I rant I applaud MWEB for getting the whole uncapped thing going. Thing is guys and I've said this before many years ago on these boards, MWEB pray on the naive with a relentless marketing machine that targets the right demographic. 90 percent of MWEB clientele are actually doing double back flips even though they have no idea what the hell "on demand TV" is. It's simple really, on demand TV is just another way to milk that cap and get more people on to the subpar uncapped system freeing up more "quality" bandwidth to sell through to big business, not rocket science is it.
 
But seriously MWEB, this was a bit of a dicey move. There most probably wont be that many people that meet the qualifications to use this, not saying that there aren't any, but there will be few.

1. I'm assuming that most of your customers that will fall in love with this will the on the lower end of the tech scale, now this would be fine if most of these people had caps larger than 1,2,3 GB. The people who have your uncapped services are generally on the higher end of the scale and they will just Megavidieo or torrent the files they want.

However I understand that this is in one sense being used to up the DSTV customer pool, if I'm correct then its still not going to work very well, as you need a premium subscription + at least a 512kb/s connection to even think of using it and trust me, 512 sucks for streaming shaped or not. Not everyone that has DSTV premium has mweb ADSL and in the end I'm sure these people would rather record the shows than move ISPs and then attempt to watch a slow buffering video.

2. I mentioned a little about the cost already, but I'll say it again, its too expensive. If you offered say - DSTV over IP for R 100/m (or even less with a choice of programs, like have access to any 5 series for R 30/m) to any mweb subscriber, whether or not they have a current DSTV subscription then we'd have something worth considering, it would be at lest a start. But right now it makes more sense just to torrent the files and cancel ones DSTV subscription as it costs so much for so little.

3. The network, I think I speak for most people here when I talk about the possible congestion on the network due to this, our accounts are already shaped a lot, even though you have upgraded your network perhaps it would be better to spend that bandwidth on, oh lets say reducing p2p shaping and shaping on games, that would cause more people to flock towards mweb, as everyone is currently looking for the best deal out there, and you can make it so.

4. The programs as mentioned before seem to be a little out of date, generally people do not like this, we can rent the same series on DVD for less than the total cost of premium + uncapped.

While I understand this is all in the name of progress it is a bit of an iffy plan to say the least.
 
So if im happy to stream content on my pc screen can i trow away my tv?
 
Right guys, I think its time to stop ranting now. No matter what WE (the mybb community) say, it has no effect on the overall outcome. We are not going to change their minds. The few Mweb reps that are on these forums are probably not gonna bother reading our complaints and they sure as hell wont stop this from happening. This is the route Mweb wants to go and they are clearly not going to listen to their customers. They will try and explain things (watered down) but in the end, its going to happen. So I say, lets continue using their uncapped accounts, seeing as they are currently the best, and not bother using this rubbish service that they have just announced. Until such time a new ISP comes out with a better uncapped package and we can all jump ship once again!

Edit: I think Mweb just damaged themselves. Shot themselves in the foot. Bang! there goes all the good they'v done so far...
