MWEB Uncapped - something big might be happening tomorrow!

The mweb dude just said "For now, the only ISP that meets the requirements for DStv on Demand is MWEB. Once other ISPs have reached these technical requirements, the service will be available to a lot more people. The goal is to have many people on the service :)"
 
I am a premium DSTV subscriber and use Telkom DO Level 3 and Afrihost Data Caps.

When I went to the DSTVonDemand site - I entered my username and password and was able to login already because THE SITE IS THE SAME SITE AS DSTV.COM!! So because I originally was registered for DSTVon Demand on the DSTV site I am now also allowed to use this "new" cr@p..

Now please Mweb - WTF is new about all of this???? Bugger all........ they have only upped the content slightly.......

Give me live streaming of DSTV channels then I will praise you AND move over to MWEB Uncapped
 
Anyone notice that no-one from M-Web are replying to any of the 2 threads? They are probably hiding somewhere.

It's not worth it to the bulk of people, sure.
But it's not like we're being charged more or anything... why are so many people spamming this?

i knew the hype wouldn't match reality...

i have a premium account but not a pvr decoder....so i will need to spend 4 grand to install a hd pvr...

i have tv on demand, its called astraweb!

people are just disappointed that what they wanted was not announced...

we expected so much and it snowballed...

I Wonder .........

IF Vodacom / MTN REALLY had a working 14.4 everywhere.
IF we had devices that could operate at those speeds.
IF their ridiculous prices were halved.
IF they had a dedicated media / entertainment server / s.
IF you could choose / download / watch what YOU want -- ON DEMAND.

Would it be worthwhile watching movies anywhere -- anytime ?
 
How many people are going to download a program onto their PC, rather than simply walking to the lounge and watching it immediately on PVR on their (larger?) TV? The market for this product is tiny -- only Windows users who (already) have an uncapped 4MB MWeb account and a premium DStv subscription who would prefer to watch on their PC. I know the previous on-demand offering required Windows Media Player because of the DRM. The news reports are also saying that the "first phase" will be free.

Seems you dont have to record any more, on my hd pvr on demand is added and theres a list of programs you can watch

While its no surprise today's announcement didn't 'strike a chord' with many of the MyBroadband community, please understand the community represents a small portion of our total customer base. For the average less tech-savvy MWEB/DSTV Premium subscriber (esp without a PVR), having the ability to watch programming that they may have missed due to a busy schedule, represents real value.

Also view today's announcement as the first step toward more advanced IP/TV converged offerings, better to start somewhere rather than just blowing hot air.

Fair enough -- points well taken. I think the frustration here is that yesterday's teaser created the impression that MWeb would be announcing a major new product -- no more shaping, a gaming account, etc. -- but instead you "announced" a product which has already been available via the DStv website for some time.

MWEB, I think most people appreciate what you are trying to do, it's just how you are going about it that is flawed.
Here are a few points:
  1. The service is tied to MWEB internet account holders who also have a Premium DSTV subscription, which is quite a small pool of people.
  2. The content is currently limited to local soaps and 7 movies.
  3. A similar service has been available since 2007, so there is nothing revolutionary about it. MWEB raised expectations and then it became a non-event (I could have told you the reaction, but then you have highly paid people to advise you)
  4. You cannot pause the video stream and wait for the buffer to fill. This makes it unwatchable on 384kb and maybe also on 512kb, depending on the dreaded MWEB shaper.
  5. You have to run a separate .exe file to make downloads possible. Why not just add a 'download' button?

So the idea is good, but the implementation is so typically South African, I just want to cringe!

Good response.

However, your response does not match your product marketing drive, in fact, even the product name is a complete lie.
What you are selling is NOT DSTV ON DEMAND, it is in fact: STREAMING DSTV RECORDINGS.
These 2 concepts are universes apart.
