MWEB Uncapped - something big might be happening tomorrow!

If every company just developed stuff that ALL their clients could use then no progress would ever be made.

And Mweb hosting the stuff means viewing should be a lot better than what would have been the case had they been forced to source the content from another ISP. I think this is a positive step towards true IPTV. But unless LLU happens soon or Telkom lowers prices that still remains in the future. At least when external stuff starts to happen Mweb will be positioned well to quickly roll out other services/options.

Exactly! I download all my shows before they are even released in SA. Why would I go for this kind of service? It has no benefits to me. I anyway get what I want, When I want it. This is nothing more then another marketing gimmick. I see no potential in this. People will eventually learn that if they have uncapped at home, they can download their shows as soon as its released in the US and not have to wait for DSTV to bring it out. For eg, Iv almost completed 24 season 8. SA has not even started airing episode 1 of season 8. Why the heck would I go for such a service????

1) The MyBB members hyped this all by themselves
2) there are no pills for stupidity
3) 1 month uncapped access isnt really that much of a "vas in 'n k o ntrak k# k"
 
If they had lowered subscription rates (no dish/decoder would theoretically be needed) and made a PROPER valued offering I would've been happy.
As it stands now, I have a 32" Samsung LCD Tv. Now this doubles as my PC monitor in my space.... What this means is I can use PIP (picture in picture) which allows me to watch whatever channels I've got on my Dual View PVR, while still being able to surf the net/play games etc.

I just don't see why I would pay for a TV service to use on my PC, unless it was specifically tailored in such a fashion.

This is not at all a big announcement. As pointed out by many this was a service that already existing. At the this the fact that you need a DSTV premium subscription anyway and you can just as well watch the programs on your TV in your lounge. Most 4Mb uncapped account holders and DSTV premium subscribers probably have PVRs already too so just record the show and watch it.

Yes, it is indeed an add-on but it is by no means a BIG announcement worth creating hype about!

Do the math dude:

100% population on DSTV, ok 50% going to TOPTV, but anywats, 10% of their subscribers on premium and own PVR, they are hardly at home but can still afford to pvr, from that 10% lets say 5% are mweb customers, ti me that is a very small piece of the pie they are trying to impress... all i see is these nut cases giving priority to streaming DSTVOD while we all get shaped even more to accommodate these guys... Then again i could be wrong... Am i?
 
I don't want to pay more than I am now, so I will have to fork out more money to Mweb to have decent DSTV download speeds, I will do the torrent thing rather
 
If they had said that all DSTV premiuns users get a free uncapped adsl account from mweb that would have been ground breaking ! Also is they had a server to show say the complete series of dexter from series one till the latest that might help , but we can get that from "other places" ..

Move along people ... nothing new here .....
 
I will continue to use MWEB as my 4mb uncapped ISP seeing as they right now are the best. But I will not buy into this rubbish.
 
For many years people have said that stuff is being pirated because the media companies refuse to move on with the times and embrace the digital age. Here is an example of a step made in that direction, even if a small one. Personally I would rather have a legal service I pay a subscription to than downloading it off the Internet. Have a look at NetFlix - you pay a monthly subscription and you can then stream any TV episode or movie in their collection. No nasty warning letters, no 3-strikes cutoff of any kind. Naspers is the kind of company that CAN offer a service like this eventually, since they have the money and the purchasing power with media corporations to do it. Whether they will or not is a whole different story.

If MWEB hosts this content locally in their own DC, then there's no need to shape it. Yes, this will put a heavier load on their IPC network, so that will have to be enlarged, with the associated cost implications. But as long as there's free capacity on the IPC network, and the servers hosting this aren't being flooded with requests from subscribers, there is no reason this shouldn't work at close to your line speed.

Hiya mate i got same Samsung 32 with PIP connected to PC but i find that i cannot get sound from the pip mode, did you find a way around this?

No they did not! Mweb stated on their "free the web" website that a big announcement would be made. They did the same thing on Facebook. And likewise on Twitter. The wording stated that the big announcement would be "In the spirit of progress and a demand for a better Internet in South Africa". I cannot see how it is progress if this offering already existed and I am not sure it provides "better" internet!

I scrapped my dstv aaages ago... I download all my series (go ahead flame, dont give a shyte) in 720p so I get to watch when and where I WANT... with no ad breaks! the only thing I miss a bit is the sport, but I jump onto justin.tv for the super 14 otherwise Im mostly at a mates house having a braai or something while we watch the stormers pwn!

why even bother with dstv? I was sitting with the remote the other night at a friend, and I was going through "ALL" the channels.... What a load of k@k...

I must also say that the numbers are VERY misleading... as it goes up over 400... so you fooled into thinking 400 channels hahaha! Think we counted less than 80- channels, minus all the BS news channels, SABC crarp etc etc and what you left with!? :wtf:

those are my thoughts.
 
meh... it would be cool if I could view dstv on demand on my xbox... otherwise I wouldn't really use it ever...

you could use this the same way i use cucirca.com

use the ps3 to log onto dstod website - choose your show, watch on your tv.

how terribly exciting.
