MWEB Uncapped Subscribers Feedback

I just had a check with this: http://releases.ubuntu.com/9.10/ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso.torrent

As erratic as the speeds were i managed to hover around 80KB/s although not what should be expected on a 4meg at this time, it's a good place to compare

Let's see, trying it as a point of reference.

Currently it's blistering along at around 10-20 kB/s. Not too bad.

*edit*

I dunno, perhaps it's a fantastical fantasy memory, but when I first got the account, torrents seemed a hell of a lot faster than they are now.

Who knows?

Sorry Mweb ops. I don't use torrents or any other form of P2P. I don't like then, never have, never will.

I used to only use your own news server. Normally NZB's of up to 30 days was fine. They downloaded fast or they did not download at all. In those cases it was just too bad. Then your network issues started. Now your news server is erratic and just downright useless. If it downloads, it crawls at 40kbps. Some times you hit it lucky and it runs faster, when it does, it is erratic.

I got the astraweb connection purely because the upgrades did nothing for my download experience today. Was not impressed to see speeds of the lower tens on Astraweb when not using ssl. If you switch to ssl, the download picks up substantially all the way to 240 to 380 range.

That is as much info as I have available.

I would also like to add that I started out with Astraweb, and that my connection was limited to 1mbps. I discovered early on that if I add the mweb news server to that, that I would get full speed on most of my downloads. You server where so good, that in the end I switched to that only. I figured I rather use your own, than put strain on you international bandwidth. I also switch to just downloading at night when I needed something, it was fast enough not to bother me.

Then two weeks ago someone unplugged your server....

Even with the upgrades I have found no reason to complain apart from the down time last weekend from Friday 4pm to Saturday 4pm. The rest of the time my uncapped connection has been brilliant and I got 440kb/s all the time. Sure my P2P traffic has been limited to 10kb/s at times but I can understand this and HTTP was full speed the whole time.

Thanks MWEB - I am a very happy customer. People that are complaining need to understand that high usage services like Torrents, Usenet and certain HTTP destination will be shaped - thats just the way it is.

@ MWEB

After a 10 hour stint connected to Supernews I have been getting a measured average download speed of 22.6 KB/s on a 512 package.
Could you please indicate if this is the type of download speed I can expect in future due to shaping?

Tested the Supernews server and my line with my WA account, and it runs at full speed, just to illiminate any problems my side.

I predict the current speed resurgence to last ~10hours -at the most. Seriously, all this new capacity will only last as long as it takes MWEB to add more data-hungry subscribers to the pool; then it's back to business-as-usual...

That's strange because I have been getting full line speed for past 5 hours on Supernews
Well done MWEB - a massive improvement, hope it lasts.

Yup, I don't get it. Many people here seem to be getting good speeds, but quite a few are not getting the same results. Makes me think that all is maybe not well.

@xrapidx We've had plenty of reports of great P2P speeds so far today. Those of you who aren't happy seem to have Astraweb in common. I'm not sure why that should be the case, but I'll escalate this to our networks team and ask them to look into this.

Could you possibly provide us with the server addresses and connection types used?

I'll have to check when I get home - its the standard Astraweb EU/US connection - on the standard NNTP port. No SSL.

I'm more than happy to switch to torrents if they're faster, but it seems like a waste of bandwidth.

Torrents are only fast past midnight. In the day time mine is between 20kb/s and 10kb/s on a 4mbps line. That is when I do HTTP downloads to compensate. I'm on 146.67 GB now.

Rapidshare running at 300kb/s - No unshaping measures on my side.

Who'd have thought that all this new bamdwidth would speed things up? :p

Thanks again MWEB! You're starting to become Afrihost V2, Viva Revolution!

yesterday during the day Torrent was doing average 20KB/s (the times that I was not playing games online)
international link for LOTRO averaged 270 latency
during the night my line maxed on torrents again

so looks good on my side

Great improvements after the weekend. I'm now actually getting an connection to the news servers and averaging between 0 - 20 kbps

Thanks Mweb ... The speeds improved a lot after my downtime on Saturday..

Its almost like you guys forget to turn the shaping back on.. (Keep it up,,, I mean the shaping off)

I hope the performance I got after saturday remains .. as last week was really bad. My 4 Meg line actually got performance close to a 4 meg line.

Yeh, all fine my side. The figures below show data usage on my 384 line from yesterday at 12PM to 8 this morning. Looks a little like the kind of performance I used to see months ago. Will be interesting to see if this improves further with the next upgrade this month.

Your doing something right ! Just push the envelope a little more please.
