D-Link DSL-2500U? Those are awesome little routers. The only D-Link that has annoyed me so far is the 2760U.

yes thats the one, very similar to my billion is shape and size but the interface takes some getting used to ... the auto install sucks if you not very router literate :D i had to call telkom to get the right settings... the auto install leaves out the vpn thingy and some other stuff ...

the telkom lady was very helpfull and took me step by step through the set-up

i prefer the billion with regards to the interface, i was able to set it up myself the first time.

ROFL - MWEB just phoned me - their excuse for my pathetic speeds is shaping - apparently shaping a 4MB line 24/7 to 30-100KB (max peaks) is the norm... they claim other users shouldn't be getting more than that, just as well I cancelled if 30KB/s is the new norm on their shaping policy for 4MB.

First thing he said was that if I'm getting such slow speeds - how did I manage to do so much downloading this weekend, which is quite convenient considering the complaint went in on Friday, and my speed increased the next day... which is exactly that I told them, and asked for comment on why I was only able to do less than half of that last week.

So, apart from HTTP usage, a 4 meg uncapped account is pretty useless for reading the news, doing torrents, etc. Seems best value can be had from a 384 account, again discounting HTTP use.

Yip .. apparently the guys getting full line speed are anomalies - I should not be able to get full line speed since the switch over from Saix.

Good to finally get a straight answer from someone, in other news it seems nntp is completely screwed and they want us all to use p2p instead (not that they'd actually advertise that anyway), good thing I got most of what I needed by now.
If you think about it they used the same strategy as with the free McAfee "suite" and local uncapped trial, they reel u in with a bit of time with the horse and then shove the pony up ur behind. At least the time with the horse can be memorable hehehe.

Seems MWEB has returned back to their pathetic selves after they called me. How convenient.

This is what you get on a 4MB account:

Code:
15 Nov 2010 10:51:51 15 Nov 2010 14:46:30 262.6MB (18.67KB/s)
15 Nov 2010 08:58:25 15 Nov 2010 10:57:14 146.4MB (20.82KB/s)
15 Nov 2010 08:08:29 15 Nov 2010 08:58:12 79.2MB (23.3KB/s)

Sometimes I imagine the country's ISP's as being in a pyramid structure, with some ANC official right at the top. Proudly South African.
But jokes and ISP double-talk aside, in Britain's rural areas its just as bad as it is here, mayby very slightly better I dunno but still. And lets not forget the country the world tends to forget, Australia, at least we have excuses sheesh.

Ha Ha - Sucks to be you!
I get faster speeds on my 384k.

In Australia if you took all the kangaroos and lined the up from nose to tail from Sydney, you'ld still end up with more sheep in New Zealand than people.

Right... I need to add my 5 Cents here...
I moved from MWEB to OpenWeb a little while ago. I still owed them R208.65 which, as I found out today, was handed over to ITC Business Administrators faster than 21mb/s... Anyway, I was not aware of the hand over and duly paid MWEB the R208,65 on the 1st but got a letter, dated the 8th, from ITC BA today saying I owed R273,07..? I phoned ITC to query and sent them a copy of my proof of payment...
Case closed... Not exactly...
Ten minutes after sending the mail I got an SMS from ITC BA saying they were about to advise MWEB to apply for judgement..!
I called ITC BA and was told there was a balance for legal fees... I should contact MWEB to sort it out. I called MWEB who then told me that given the timing, they'd handed me over on the 26th of last month and the letter was dated the 8th of this month, I would not be liable... UNLESS... unless that is, if ITC BA had attempted to contact me between the 26th and the 1st when payment was made... in which case I'd have to pay.
The ITC BA claim to have sent me two SMSs... I never got them and I'm pretty sure I would have noticed an SMS from the ITC... I don't know anyone who wouldn't...
Anyway, I figured I couldn't beat them and offered to settle the difference of R64,42 straight away... This it turns out was NOT acceptable... During the conversation, the ITC call centre agent said I actually owed them R85 and by the end of the phone call her calculations had brought it to R94,31.
I have nothing from MWEB or the ITC BA saying I owe them R94,31 but I felt pretty sure from the tone of the conversation that if I paid them R64,42... The number I have in writing the ITC BA and MWEB would take judgement against me, and the amount would be anyones guess...
I think you are judged by the company you keep and if MWEB are keeping company with the ITC BA then all I can say is bring on OpenWeb.

I would have fought it - they can't just hand you over, you should have not accepted you owe a cent - and asked for proof.

i was told ,.. between 10 and 30k will be the norm on a 4 Meg line.. because MWeb is bringing the saix people over and thats how its going to be from now on. (This is from technical support)

that was about a month ago.. The next day.. I was virtually unshaped for 3 weeks. Now I have returned to about 50k early evening to 250k plus early hours of the morning.

The lesson

The techies on the phone dont know too much....

I was actually going to say that,

Techie 1 (who I had) : its shaping
Techie 2 : Its Telkom
Techie 3: There's a problem on xyz
Techie 4:
etc
etc.

MWEB Techie guide on how not to do much at the office.

Yep... But all the way through the conversation I had this dread that it was the ITC in the back of my mind.
It's 100 bucks, so not the end of the world... It was the way it was handled which annoyed me... and the way the number kept going up felt like an auction where someone else is bidding for you... I just wanted to end the conversation and do the transfer as fast as I could before the auction got up to some serious numbers.

Im experiencing very slow speed again. Everything was fine and now speeds are abysmal. Even loading websites takes forever. I hate this. Taking one step forward and 20 steps backwards.

I'm not sure how it works - but what if something like that stays on record somewhere?

Have to agree with xrapidx here.

It WILL stay on record, specially with ITC. they keep things forever and it does damage your credit rating (I work for a financial institution)

I also think unless you have a summons or something to that effect, they can't go and do that. You have to be made aware of the arrears.

I do however stand to be corrected on that.
