MWEB Uncapped Subscribers Feedback

If one was to use the MWEB NNTP server, one would not be able to bypass shaping (i.e not going against AUP)

Then, if one made sure that one did not run at full speed for hours at a time, one would not go against the AUP.

If one was to follow the above two steps, is it possible that one could download a large amount, yet stay in line with MWEB's AUP???

Not currently, no.

BTW when WACS opens up will things be better?

Hi jackshiels,

We will certainly be looking into the feasibility of making use of this connection, however my understanding is that it will only become commercially available in early 2012 so I don't think you are likely to see anything happening on it this year.

I won’t commit to whether or not we will be taking capacity on WACS, but we do explore these possibilities with all the cables that are available.

Kind regards,

MWEB Guy

Very simply greg, it refers to the use of NNTP service providers who explicitly provide an SSL based feed. Many of these providers advertise these value adds as high speed as they are well aware of the fact that ISPS who shape find it more challenging to manage the traffic.

imho, this is taking it a step too far and is borderline draconian. customers may prefer that they use SSL for privacy, mweb knows who the news providers are so why not rather shape/throttle on destination than punish people because they want to protect their privacy.

internet keeps dying.why does this happen everyday at around this time?

Hi DeadCore,

Do you have any automatic updates set on your PC that starts at a certain time? What time does your street lights go on at night? Do you have sprinkler system that switches on at night?

How many PC's connect to the router at night? Do you have wireless security on your router? (Maybe someone connects at night to your router)

Do you perhaps have an Ethernet cable running next to fluorescent lights?

There can be so many factors that can answer this trend. Please provide me with your MWEB account details and I'll investigate further.

Kind regards,

MWEB Guy

I suspect that the vast majority of people who are downloading GBs and GBs of content over SSL are doing so because it bypasses the shapers, not because they are concerned about privacy.

So lets use another example. There's some lonely guy out there, he watches a lot of pr0n (streams), for ****s & giggles, let's say it's HD as well, he streams a lot, probably more than is healthy and too protect his privacy he streams via SSL, oh poo ... he's now broken the AUP.

I did not know that my street lights had an effect on my interwebs! must be something to do with the new florescent light bulbs they installed next to the telephone lines!

so if i shoot out all the lights in my street will my interwebs improve?

If he streams GBs of content over SSL day after day after day, then yes, he would be in contravention of the AUP. If he's that into it, he should rather purchase the unshaped product. Or get a real life :)

You can have lights or Internet but not both. I'm sure you can live by the light of your browser running on your LCD panel :)

I eventually managed to log into GMail chat long enough to properly log out of it and disable it. It's less frustrating than trying to get it to work.

If this is an MWEB problem, they had better sort it out, otherwise this will be the straw that breaks my camel's back.

Ridiculous.

And yet i'm sure the product was called uncapped no? We'll have to agree to disagree. IMO "free the web" did not mean people should give up their rights too privacy on the internet. But at the end of the day, it's Mweb's network, and they can do as they please. I'd only hope that their cancellation policy for subscribers was as "dynamic" as their shaping.

Whahahahaha they will blame anything except their network.
Hey mweb, why is youtube so slow? Answer "did you by any chance eat tomato soup today?"

You suspect wrong.

SSL was shaped from day one. It's only over the last two months that it bypassed shaping occasionally. I personally never even factored this into the equation as it is a setting on my Newsbin client that was set like that from the start. I though the better throughput on my account from May onwards was an improvement in MWeb's service. How wrong I was.

I trust that their ABUSE department will terminate my account tomorrow. Once again Mweb reveal their true colors.

It was and is called "uncapped". It did and does come with T&C and an AUP though.
