Guys, something is horribly wrong here... My usual browsing is seriously slow at the moment. YouTube is a joke, and Torrents (and news - but I am aware of current difficulties) are looking like pork trotters gone off.

Speeds are really low atm - only getting a max of 80Kbps for the past few hours :(

Only getting a max of 30KB/s using usenet(astraweb) on my 4mbit today while on saterday it was hitting 200KB/s,not very happy at this stage but then again Ive only had this line for 5 days :(

Yes today is slower than usual. Only getting max sustained speed of 225KB/sec. RS is shaped to 30-40KB/sec while it's usually shaped to 100KB/sec at this time.

Here is something i've been fiddling with, while not necessarily that accurate (because I'm covering my ass form a barrage of raging forumites). It clearly shows (to me at least) that from about 04H00 03.05.10 that speeds have dropped, why and on what protocols I can't tell for the time being (or at least while I fiddle more with MRTG or whatever its called).

attachment.php

Again, I reiterate these stats could mean more than the pixels they're displayed on, but its my preliminary attempt.

EDIT: And speedtest, to illustrate my point without straining your eyes:

Some heavy shaping going on at the moment it seems. Http good, Torrents and rapidshare very slow.

I suppose it is difficult to set up the perfect system to control shaping on all protocols to make everybody happy. Heavy shaping during the weeks between say 07h00 and 00h00 on all protocols could be a suggestion with a more 'open' policy between 00h00 and 07h00. Heavy downloaders should stick to packages like axxess's express+ etc.... We've managed to reach the uncapped state at a reasonable price now the next target is unshaped - this could take another year or two, more cables to land and so forth. At least MWEB got something started here. Hehe streets ahead of my 14.4k modem in 1990 :)

Does anyone else notice that MWeb (local) ping times from Cape Town are very slow today (lunchtime Mon 3rd)?

2 7 ms 7 ms 6 ms 41-132-48-1.dsl.mweb.co.za [41.132.48.1]
3 94 ms 95 ms 94 ms tengig-0-0-0-104.vic-ipc-1.mweb.co.za [196.22.169.146]

Seems to be back to normal this morning (Tues 4th), down to 30ms on the CT-Jhb hop.

BTW: This congestion on local routes could certainly explain the complaints last night.

Mine hasn't changed -- still around 150ms to the first node...

I'm not sure where you are located, but each each route to Jhb has its own issues.

Ouch! Just noticed my pings are back to 90ms. Obviously not solved yet...

In another thread someone posted an IS notice that Telkom were having problems on one of their fibres, with increased latencies at Rosebank (Jhb), which may be related:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...ion-problems&p=3871540&viewfull=1#post3871540

Nothing on the MWeb Network Notices page:
http://www.mweb.co.za/helpcentre/NetworkStatusNotices/tabid/1765/Default.aspx

I guess 90ms isn't significant for them, but it makes a noticeable difference for HTTP browsing and downloads.

Just checked and find that my latencies have increased to over 100ms, up from 50ms yesterday. Speeds also slower eg 2mb on 4 mb line. Will monitor and see what happens later. No notices from Mweb re faults etc.

AWE FULL!!! my internet is down to dialup speed in CPT....
with ping running at 6223ms to JHB
http://www.speedtest.net/result/803221978.png
and from CPT to CPT a ping rate of 2769ms
http://www.speedtest.net/result/803227898.png
this has been like this the entire month on my 384...Common MWeb what is happening???

Ouch, that seems bad. More likely its a combination of a bad line, and an MWeb problem. I'm on 4Mbps and its slow, but not that bad...

Can you post a tracert rather, since that helps narrow down the problem. (The first few hops are the most important, and are the same for all sites). If its the first 2 hops then its your line and DSLAM, if its the 3rd hop then its your ISP.
