dearest mweb, please man up and just tell us if its a congestion issue on your side?
or new mythical bandwidth management system which kicked in along with the changes after the new CPA which took effect starting of May 2011, and causing the 1700+ posts on just this thread alone

08h00 and both local and international downloads are running smooth, will report back again in about 2 hours

Our networks team applied some updates to traffic profiles at 17h00, we usually do these at 06h00 as the traffic flows take about an hour to settle down afterwards and it can result in some disruption of service while this is happening. The changes made are primarily to address an issue that was picked up on unshaped products, but we are also testing some additional optimizations for shaped products as well. Our networks team are very aware of the issues raised in the thread recently and we are working closely with them to attempt to replicate all of the problems described and assist them in testing any optimizations they feel may be neccesary. It's possible that we will go through this cycle more than once over the course of this week and we will obviously rollback any changes made immediately if we feel they have had a negative impact. Note that these changes are only being made on the Cape Town segment of the network for now, we will deploy the changes to the JHB segment once we are 100% happy with the results.

Well imho traffic last night was not so good, but bearable and would have wanted better. I hope we don't get this now each night magically clockwise between 6-8pm.

I suppose no telling on what these "optimizations" is as it seems more like heavier shaping testing. I would think that the "optimizations" gets tested in a testing environment before rolling them out. This is how I normally roll with my code.

international http downloads going between 100-200KB/s on the mweb VM
internatianal downloads near maxing line speed on the afrihost VM

wanna log in and check and do some tests ? :)

In another move to ‘Free The Web’ MWEB are doubling the speeds of their 512Kbps customers for free! More speeds on uncapped means more data, which usually means more costs… NOT this time! For more info http://on.fb.me/9Zi5F0

Thanks spelling nazi, I keep forgetting to install a spell checker on my browser at home :o

The configuration changes do get put through their paces in a lab environment however it's simply not possible to simulate the complexity of a live network of this scale.

If you have concerns about any particular aspect of your experience last night I'd appreciate it if you could provide me with some specifics so that I can pass this feedback on to our engineers.
 
The point is that if http and youtube are going to be that heavily shaped then tell us so that we can downgrade to 1 meg - what's the use of paying for 4 meg line that is effectively unusable.
 
I agree Will@MWEB - cause something is horribly broke.

I get 5.8mbps on my 4mbps uncapped line with Speedtest.net

But then barely get 5kbps from Apple's servers for streaming media? Sounds to me like serious shaping or broken shaping going on there...

(edit: lol i forgot about my signature from when i used to work at Mweb lol)
 
Mine seems to be back to the normal 4mbps, instead of the 1mbps I had for the last few days. Will monitor it , hopefully it sticks. Maroelana,Pretoria for those interested in the area.

It's based on a combination of factors Sillicur and generally yes there is a usage and network load pattern which means that the available bandwidth for p2p increases in the evenings. Understand that you are not shaped as an individual, you are sharing an available pool of bandwidth for everyone who uses p2p. We are trying as much as possible to move away from the concept of rigid time windows for p2p allocation into a more dynamic environment where p2p can utilize spare capacity at any time of the day more freely.

p2p vs http & streaming ?

ps. im only fighting the cause for http and streaming, dont care about torrents and nntp etc, cause it is a shaped product after all

Since I've bought an AppleTV now and and streaming from itunes instead of using P2P i say just cut em all off!! *grin*

vaalpens obviously those are considered priority services and have a much higher assurance level.

Interesting comment that :) I read an article recently which indicated that netflix traffic has overtaken bitorrent in the US.
