MWEB guy: What is the problem with speeds?

I find it strange that they are keeping all of us in the dark. Now there are apparently Telkom upgrades in the mix?

WTF is going on?

Morning Guys, please note that we have had numerous clients in the JHB and Durban complaining about download speeds from +/- 8/10am to +/-10pm in comparison to Cpt (shaping hours). We are taking all our clients views into consideration and as advised in the following article, we are in the process of adding a 3rd IPC link in Durban that should improve the experience of our DBN client base. This should in turn affect the whole network, as it would alleviate strain on the JHB link.

That's awesome. Why can't anyone stream any of the E3 presentations though? Even is SD. Just buffers all the time.

Through which site are you trying to watch the presentations?

Is anyone else here from Cape Town using usenetserver?

My downloads are still running at about 5K, when I'm lucky enough to connect. Not even the Mweb news server is working

I couldn't get it to work through gametrailers.com I got it semi-working here:

http://www.youtube.com/user/e3

Thankfully youtube adjusts video quality to line speed so played at around 240p.

To me it seems like either a shaping issue or international capacity issue. Cached videos play well. Tried to watch a freshly upload Witcher2 review @ 480p and was also buffering.

So from what I can see it really doesn't seem like a IPC issue. Check this post to see what I am talking about:

It's the shaping that's borked.

EDITED:
Forgot to mention that my free 1gig Afrihost account let me stream at what looked like 480p if not slightly better.

I will test at the test bench and let you know if I can replicate your problem.

Not to seem ungrateful but others are having the same issue.

Why do they have do this to me NOW, it's the one time of the year I watch live stream on the web and now I can't go more than 5s without it buffering.

ARRRRRRGGGGG!!!!!!

Buffering issues now and then anyone?
http://www.youtube.com/e3

Well when I try watch that Youtube turn the stream down to like 4p, like I have trouble making out the difference between the presenter and the floor, and it still can't go for more than 30s without buffering.

OMG- can't watch the e3 stream on http://e3.gametrailers.com - it buffers every freaking two seconds. I think its time to cancel this crap.

Tried gt, ign, game spot and youtube. All of then are crap, buffer constantly. Thanks mweb for this crap service, ill be looking at some other ISP options.

I am using it from Jhb. It's not allowing me to connect at all though. I checked last night at 1 am and it reached speeds of 30kb/s. Truly great performance on a 4mb account. My MWEB news is going at full speed at the moment though.

MWEB Guy: I wasn't able to connect to my usenet server yesterday (Connection Timeout error). I seem to have the same problem today. I've tested it on a Telkom account and it works perfectly. Others seem to have the same problem. Is this supposed to happen? Usenet disabled during the day? Slow after midnight?

MwebGuy, having a browsing problem during the day, we upgraded to the 4mb uncapped package from 384 yet we are having more issues now than ever, what can i test to determine what the problem is?

It seems like the connection doesnt drop but there is no data being sent or received, and then it bursts again (after hitting F5 numerous times)

The sites being visited as an example is www.corobrik.co.za

Been trying different things with Mweb Guy but still having problems just BROWSING, their own site flies, and then click on a their ADSL link and you wait and wait and wait, no activity on the ADSL router. Press F5 once or twice and BAM its loaded immediately.... Tried a 1GB afrihost account and there are NO issues browsing any local site, everything flies down, even www.mweb.co.za site is much faster than on their own 4mb package.

did i make a mistake moving to 4mb this month?

Even the Skype app doesnt stay connected when i am on MWEB package, switch to Afrihost and it stays connected the whole time, even logmein's app is struggling to maintain just the connection to the main site

THanks for the update MWeb Guy

Its very dissapointing to me to see that almost a month and a half since I first started watching this topic and also voicing my concerns and problems that not a lot has been done to alleviate the problems.

Like so many other users I am also constantly battling with my speed - and more specifically with trying to stream videos.

I finally proved to myself last night that this was an Mweb uncapped issue when I bought a prepaid Axxess account and all the streams suddenly started screaming down my line. So its not my line at fault, and its not the streaming provider - its Mweb. Plain and simple.

Also very dissapointing to see that while so many people have voiced problems the Mweb support line seems to be "its your router", etc.

Perhaps they have decided that they don't need to listen to feedback on MyBB anymore?

news server wise 196.28.78.229 connects but doesnt do anything and news.mweb gets me a massive high speed of...2KBps
Edit: it jumped to 10KBps

better to just buy nag at the end of the month, most vids will be on the dvd

But you shouldn't have to. My understanding was that shaped accounts are shaped precisely to ensure that HTTP downloads, SSL connections and time-critical throughput works correctly. If these do NOT work correctly despite the shaping, then there is a problem somewhere on the network. I'm on a 384kbps account, so I expect to buffer streaming video, but for MWEB not to be able to deliver streaming video to those on 4mbps+ lines is very poor and actually not acceptable.
