MWEB uncapped wireless broadband services launched

Salivating and waiting to be first in line for the consumer product. Lets go MIDRAND WIRELESS GROUP !!!Anyone ???

Yes, cannot wait, hopefully they will offer that, my cables has been stolen 4 times which equals to almost 2 months downtime this year alone. MWEB Wimax for home use would be a great alternative.

Forgive my ignorance on this , but just a question i would like to ask or have confirmed . With this wireless setup from mweb , it effectively removes the so called "last mile" correct ? So this is basically adsl without Telkom ? Wireless yes , but not having to include telkom and its "last mile" gripe . LLU solved and simplified really . Telkom can thus take its last mile , and stuff it ! This is great news ! Might not be the best for gamers and such but for some folks it will be great as an option to have .

Good work mweb !

And like everything else they launch, the rest as soon to follow with even cheaper deals.......

well, I guess they gotta try and get customers another way when they are bleeding customers on the other end (nochoice)

Haha this is going to stuff up MTN's plans :) GJ MWEB, really didn't see this coming

I haven't heard anyone here mention it yet; This is a revolutionary anouncement from Mweb ! Once again Mweb has stirred the pot and I think this anouncement from Mweb might lead to another price war which can only be good for us. I've been keeping a sharp eye on MyBroadband website every day for a revolutionary anouncement. Lets just hope that a affordable consumer offering would be in the works as well. The Mweb uncapped ADSL was one, then this one also from Mweb. WELL DONE MWEB !!!

For those that can afford it Mweb's wireless is MUCH better than the MTN offering we read about yesterday. And another thing.. I guess most people on this forum are lucky enough to live within range of ADSL. For those of us (like me) that are way out of reach from ADSL this is an excellent offer. Could the broadcast reach be 10km ? I think that once the EASSy, WACS etc cables start streaming prices will come down even more. I hope that Mweb also would consider installing base stations in rural towns, like where I live.

With each development like this Telkom is shooting it's own foot. What's easier to get in South Africa these days ? Wireless in one day, or a fragmented process that can last anywhere up to six weeks waiting for Telkom to get ADSL activated ? And why would Telkom have to react or move ? They have everyone by the balls.

With this Mweb anouncement I have hope. There might come a time in the future in South Africa when wireless internet would be more practical and the same prices as fixed lines, as well as have true uncapped. Could be 5 years, could be 10 years from now. Who knows. Telkom would've then given up market share to wireless providers all out of it's own fault.

Mmm, kinda. The problem is, Telkom's infrastructure is already in place, so if I live at a place where I have an existing line and want to move that (completely - not just the ISP portion) over to MWEB, I can't, because only Telkom may handle the line part.

Second problem is, Telkom's lines at least give you the option of using any ISP. So if MWEB ADSL starts getting crappy, I can cancel my contract and get another ISP immediately, while keeping my line. With MWEB Wimax, they are both your physical medium as well as ISP provider. It's one of the reasons why ADSL (and Telkom WiMax) are still good options - you can choose your ISP.

No idea how this would change if LLU ever gets implemented: can I move my Telkom line to say Neotel (perhaps because they don't force me to buy a voice line) but use MWEB as the ISP? Or would I be forced to use Neotel?

Great when I read the article but then I saw the prices.
I have internet at work and 384 at home but would like it over weekends when I am another location or roaming as 3G too expensive.
R1299 per month for that purpose is too much and unreliable Neotel with their old tech is still a better option.

True, but for me that argument can only hold water if you actually get a decent ADSL line speed to start with. I find myself in a situation where the ISP is not really my obstacle to internet freedom, but Telkom's inability to provide throughput. Regardless of which ISP I use, I'll have the same problem. Now if MWEB can deliver, let's say, a "close to" 4meg stable WiMax offering at a good price, then it really does not matter whether I have the freedom to choose my ISP or not, at least I will have full speed internet (as full as it can be in SA) as oppose to a trickle, or half speed if I'm lucky.

For me (being quite impatient at times) having high download and upload speeds are more important, than having an severely limited endless supply of bandwidth. If I want to download something, I want it now, not next week, and I don't need the entire internet, just a small piece will do :)

ADSL (FIXED LINES) > WIRELESS...

Thats the only problem :)

I agree - I sit in a position at the moment where my only options are iBurst (NO!), 3G (way too expensive) or Screamer Wimax (initial cost expensive, and not a nice bigweight like MWeb). So I am waiting for Telkom to install lines and nobody knows when this will happen.

Thing is - the most reliable type of connection, with the least congestion, can only come through wires. Wireless spectrum is limited, while wired are not. As soon as other companies can gain access to Telkom's last mile, we can get to a point where you might have a line but there are no more DSLAMs to get ADSL. Another company can then provide you one where Telkom is too lazy, but using the original lines.

I'm beginning to realise that fixed line ADSL, under Telkom's control, is not the future. LLU will become a non event if wireless keeps growing like it is. The fact is more and more companies are finding effective ways to overcome Telkom's strangehold. Shame Telkom, you better wake up now, else your days are numbered!

Well done MWEB... can't you please send some of your decision makers over to MonoChoice to help them 'see the light'??

Mr B

The main aim of wireless is mobility, when you need it.

Unless you're a road-warrior, and need to transmit a LOT of data, then rather stick to ADSL - it's a far better ROI for general voice/data comms.

As wireless technology progresses(which it is already doing at a fast pace) and more and more ISP's offer WiMax as an option, the wireless spectrum will become less and less of a constraint... in SA wireless makes a lot of sense with all the copper theft going on!

Umm, erhh, Mworms and MonoCrap are in bed with each other.

True, but the decision makers clearly aren't the same people... else MonoChoice wouldn't look/act the way it does... wait for it, soon a DSTV+Broadband internet option will make an appearance... something like...

DSTV lite + 512(+)kbsp ADSL Bundled Uncapped for R 550... including On Demand
DSTV premium + 4(+)mbsp ADSL Bundled Uncapped for R 1000... including On Demand

Mr B

MTN can learn a thing or 2 from MWEB!

This actually does seem good since i can't get a telkom line for the past 36months(more) as my current wireless provider is too expensive.

Just phone them and the sales guy knows nothing about it,
