MWEB uncapped wireless broadband services launched

I agree - I sit in a position at the moment where my only options are iBurst (NO!), 3G (way too expensive) or Screamer Wimax (initial cost expensive, and not a nice bigweight like MWeb). So I am waiting for Telkom to install lines and nobody knows when this will happen.

Thing is - the most reliable type of connection, with the least congestion, can only come through wires. Wireless spectrum is limited, while wired are not. As soon as other companies can gain access to Telkom's last mile, we can get to a point where you might have a line but there are no more DSLAMs to get ADSL. Another company can then provide you one where Telkom is too lazy, but using the original lines.

You could wait forever with Telkom and I am told they are not doing any network build over the World Cup.

I am a big gamer and went with Screamer and am very impressed with their service and performance. Their prices are also much better.
MWeb
1.Uncapped Wireless 512 Kbps - R 1299
2.Uncapped Wireless 1024 Kbps - R 1999

Screamer
1.Uncapped Wireless 512 Kbps - R 929
2.Uncapped Wireless 1024 Kbps - R 1799

I am also concerned about MWeb operating in unlicenced bands. Every WiFi geek and his dogs are blasting out on these unlicenced bands and it has already made a number of networks unuseable so the interference on this product will probably make it unfit for browsing let alone business or gaming.

I will watch the feedback space with interest.

Mmm, kinda. The problem is, Telkom's infrastructure is already in place, so if I live at a place where I have an existing line and want to move that (completely - not just the ISP portion) over to MWEB, I can't, because only Telkom may handle the line part.

Second problem is, Telkom's lines at least give you the option of using any ISP. So if MWEB ADSL starts getting crappy, I can cancel my contract and get another ISP immediately, while keeping my line. With MWEB Wimax, they are both your physical medium as well as ISP provider. It's one of the reasons why ADSL (and Telkom WiMax) are still good options - you can choose your ISP.

No idea how this would change if LLU ever gets implemented: can I move my Telkom line to say Neotel (perhaps because they don't force me to buy a voice line) but use MWEB as the ISP? Or would I be forced to use Neotel?

But with number portability you can move to this new connectivity option without anyone even knowing the difference. In fact because some folks moaned enough, Helkom have a tool on their website that you can verify whether any number is through their network or not. Including the possibility that 011 numbers are not necessarily Helkom numbers or even that it is strictly a Johannesburg/Rand area number. What i am getting at is that it will work nicely for those that can afford it.

i was wondering about that. now why would they do that?
(if they ever tell their sales guys)

True, but for me that argument can only hold water if you actually get a decent ADSL line speed to start with. I find myself in a situation where the ISP is not really my obstacle to internet freedom, but Telkom's inability to provide throughput. Regardless of which ISP I use, I'll have the same problem. Now if MWEB can deliver, let's say, a "close to" 4meg stable WiMax offering at a good price, then it really does not matter whether I have the freedom to choose my ISP or not, at least I will have full speed internet (as full as it can be in SA) as oppose to a trickle, or half speed if I'm lucky.

For me (being quite impatient at times) having high download and upload speeds are more important, than having an severely limited endless supply of bandwidth. If I want to download something, I want it now, not next week, and I don't need the entire internet, just a small piece will do :)

This comment put in the best possible context. EXACTLY!!

Well i bet Screamer is not a business package...

LOL.....

The only difference between a residential package and a business package is the price and the time you have to wait for an installation.

Well done Mweb, as a business solution it can really offer some value since its part of the unshaped, uncapped accounts. I doubt we'll see many residential users taking up this offer though and 5KM from the base station will definitely limit the market it will apply to in any case.

I agree, 5km's that isn't WIMAX either.

I think they made a bit of a boo-boo. Some idiot switched the non-event DSTV on demand announcement with this one...would have been much more "wow" to have launched this product back then... with all the hype and whatnot. Eish.

I saw a legal notice issued by MWEB quite few months ago in Stellenbosch. Stated that they intend to mount masts/equipment on the huge lights of the Coetzenburg sports grounds. Now I know why...

Your joking right????

Indeed quite surprised. Now if they are able to offer something more affordable to the home user, and have some form of stability on their network, I'll cancel my ADSL line and move over to this. Telkom better catch a wake up, they are shooting themselves in the foot on a daily basis. They either sort their over extended network out in residential areas, or affordable WiMax will be the only alternative consumers have. I'm tired of paying for something that I'm not getting, and I'm not interested in that "up to 4 meg" nonsense either. There is a BIG leap from 640 kbit/s to 4000 kbit/s.

Dude do yourself a favor and open your calculator. Multiplay 640 x 7 = 4480 kbs. Now Devide 4000kbs by 7 = 571kbs. Id say their spot on, if not more!!! Just because you have a 4mb line, Doesn't mean its a dedicated 4mb upload and download... Get with the times!

Keep in mind that these are business services - hence should be compared with Uncapped Business ADSL. The prices are quite competitive when compared with other business offerings - even ADSL.

ADSL is however still first prize of course :)

Wouldn't mind seeing a consumer version.

me as well Heck ill even cancel my Iburst if for this!!!

Clearly smoking your socks comes naturally. I have no idea what you are on about, and clearly you have no idea what I'm on about. Like the cliché goes, if you have nothing useful to contribute, then don't.

Why on earth would I want to multiply 640 with 7? Who said anything about a symmetrical DSL line? 4 meg up and download, huh? Now let me help you catch up with the times a bit. Telkom states that their "up to 4mbps" (that is megabits, not megabytes in case you did not know) is not guaranteed for a download speed of 4mbps, but is guaranteed for a minimum speed of 640kbps. Now maybe you need a calculator to work that I out, but I certainly don't. Renting and paying for a 4mbps ADSL line from Telkom means you cannot demand full line speed as per their TOC. You have to simply be happy with what you get, as long as your download speed is above 640kbps they are not obliged to do anything to give you higher speeds. This is the loophole Telkom has built in for themselves, and you tell me Mr. Not-so-wise-guy, why should I be happy with that? I say it again; there is a huge gap from 640kbps to 4mbps.

Now go back to scholl and stop bothering the grown-ups.
