My MWEB hellopeter. avoid mweb like the plague

Can anyone at least agree with what I was clearly trying to do? Try to get the most out of my line under a fair usage? And that I tried to communicate with Mweb but that they weren't very good in their communications with me?

I do hear you, but it would appear by using SSL, you were going contrary to their policies you agreed to when you signed up, and am sure this had something to do with their reactions

On my 1 meg uncapped I aim for the same and have had no hassles (I do not DL every day as I do have a capped account with WA). Have to say I have been very happy and do feel I have had value for money.

From what I have read, I do think MWeb being a big business might not get communication right all the time, and this seems to have been part of your frustrations

I'm sorry but perhaps I am missing something and you could explain. For 4 months (assuming since February as the Mweb rep has said), they have been giving you warning about your usage (and your obvious bypassing of the rules) and you are complaining that they are still giving you a chance to rectify it?

Ultimately though, they have made you aware of their terms and the rules you must abide by. Either A) abide by the rules and continue using their service in a fair manner or B) cancel your contract and try your luck with another ISP; although judging from what I have read, they would probably give you warnings as well. I'm sure you realise that if everyone thought like you, it would probably strain their networks and your speeds then would significantly decrease and the experience would be degraded; thus you would complain about that as well.

Try downloading less for a couple of week; like say 10-15 gigs (which is still a hell of a lot) and see if they still complain. If they do, then they may be too strict for your needs.

Also, just out of curiosity, assuming you download 20 gigs a day, how are you able to watch all the stuff that you are downloading?

Ok. Firstly, I wasn't trying to bypass the rules. In my letters I asked for the correct usage scenario and I explained what I was using (ssl... i wasn't trying to hide it). The guy stated that full line speed usage (40gb) was wrong and that it would be needed to take it down more than just 5gb under that (i tried to aim for half or so). I made the target based on that conversation and tried to get it to about half of line speed in general (so shoot me if I couldn't always check what general usage was doing, but I tried even if it went slightly over on occasion). I would have tried 10-15gb if that was what the conversation with the abuse dept came down to but it didnt, and if it had then I would have also started looking for another isp because then i'm feeling like they are advertising this "uncapped" product and then you're only allowed to use a quarter to a third of the available product... i felt half was fair.

As for the curiosity... i like collecting. Some people like stamps. I'm however almost done with the majority of my collection, so downloads will drop now anyway.

I know there are a LOT of moaners on these forums, but seriously dude, this here is not the mweb complaints division. :erm:

With 20 posts, at the moment you look like "just-a-moaner" member.

I come to mybroadband to read news, particularly south african related tech. I'm normally on carbonite and avforums. And this was a debate, you're not forced to take part in the debate. The point of a forum is to share news, views and experiences is it not? This was an experience and I was interested in other people's views. I also think it's something that prospective clients would be interested in. You can't just keep reading all the fun, fluffy marketing now can you?

Please go look back at the emails I wrote them. I agree to the fairness under stress. I even tried only downloading at night (between 10pm and 8am). That didn't satisfy them so what is a person supposed to do? The MAIN problem for me is that they just couldn't communicate with me as to how I can use it that suits both of us? Was my thought processes while trying to feel out the service not fair? If you think it isn't then maybe you should provide me with a better usage scenario? The fact remains that I asked them and showed them that I wanted to learn, but hey.. i must be the bad guy.

Ian in all fairness I think the bottom line here is that regardless of any ongoing correspondence you failed to make a significant attempt to comply with the policy.

I have reviewed the usage data personally now and starting in February when you were first warned I can see that you made an effort in March to curb your behavior and if you had only continued in that vein we would never have had need to reach this point.

You would have noted that we did not in fact issue you with any warnings in that month which should have been a clear indication that you were on a good path.

Unfortunately subsequent to this you returned to and in fact at times exceeded your previous usage patterns and I'm comfortable that you left our team with very little choice in terms of how to proceed here.

As to your concerns about the vagueness of our policy they are duly noted, however I'd like to point out that when issuing first warnings my statistics indicate more than 80% of the customers in this category are able to comply with the request immediately without any further correspondence being necessary.

So it's abuse if I halve my speed? I know plenty of guys that do 900gb plus in a month on a shaped service. I do about 500 or just under. I like ssl cause it gives me privacy. Don't you like privacy?

LOL, you need privacy to hide those 'Linux distros' hey?

If your mates are doing 900gb with no problems, then why aren't you using what they're using??

Wow and I thought I was bad using about 70gigs all in all a month on a 1 meg line :wtf: I think mweb are fair with their aup, I don't bypass their shaping protocols, and my torrents and similar burdens still fly! For the price I'm paying for my account i reckon it's good value for money. Really don't agree with that rolling window B.S from other ISP's my only critisism is that their new 2mb package is a bit pricey :D

I use about 140 Gigs/month, on a 1 mbps line, and I feel this is reasonable. I don't download all the time, and this comes down on torrents perfectly comfortably.

Dude you're doing this uncapped thing all wrong. Usage warnings are for rookies.

- Don't throttle yourself
- Don't use VPN's or https
- Don't download much during working hours
- Don't have consecutive months of conspicuous usage (450GB+)

That's all there is to it. Last month I used over 500GB. I've scaled back this month to a healthy 385GB thus far. Last 12 months is nearly 4TB. Not one issue. No one can say Mweb isn't the best shaped uncapped provider.

uncapped noobs :P ive had uncapped for a very long time now, and i think i average 340 gigs a month now, which i think is about right/ fair. If you are doing that much day in, day out there is something wrong. Are you really going to watch all those series/movies etc ?

The thing about your usage is its like the max, each day. When i look at my graphs, i have some days close on 30gigs, but then the next 2 are 5 gigs for example. Im not trying to download the internet, just might have high spikes when i want a few seasons of something :)

Oits! And I thought me closing in on 35GB for this month is a lot. Well, I consider it a bargain, my Telkom cap was at 20GB.

lol dude

You paying what? R400 and you wanna backup the internet?

You one of the reasons the telkom network is under such unnecessary strain which is causing the severe congestion issues. And trust me i know all about it... Just use the search function.

Get a life.

4cer has the right of it and this really perfectly describes our approach to the policy. We don't want our uncapped users to feel as though they are restricted, or being policed and as long as you behave in a reasonable fashion it's very unlikely that you'll hear from us about abuse.

Constantly queuing up masses of downloads and squeezing as much data as you can out the line day in and day out however is not reasonable behavior and will be flagged as such if it happens over an extended period of time.

Remember that we do have other products specifically designed for people who have been playing too much DayZ and are now trying to back up the entire Internet before the Zombie Apocalypse starts.

A friend of mine had a similar issue to the OP. His entire family were hammering the account though so he eventually switched to Openweb. OP it really boils down to this:

Be reasonable with your internet usage and MWEB won't hit you with the banhammer.

Seriously man, I barely pirate anything these days (yay for Steam specials and F2P) but I stream a lot of podcasts and Youtube and the most my usage has ever been is about 200 gigs (and that's even when I have tell my bro to stop seeding whatever he has finished downloading). R2.70 per gig is a pretty sweet deal to me.

I don't know what the hell you are downloading man but it would probably take you several lifetimes to get through all of it.
