My New PC!

At stock the q6600 is a huge bottleneck, you may as well buy the 4870 then. Sure you can play the latest games well but with an overclocked or bigger cpu it would maximize your purchase.

I would say though rather wait for AMD on the 9th of January because intel pricing should drop alot. You can buy a q6600 now if you like but you might find come the 15th of jan the q9550 or 9650 may drop as much as 40% depending on what AMD deliver.

I know with pc's you can wait forever but look at what happened when core 2 arrived, AMD slashed pricing by 40-50% in 2 weeks. It's not like the 9th of jan is far away either. We must just hope AMD have something strong and maybe even the new i7's will come down.

As per this article:
Company of Heroes
Q6600 @ 2.4GHz 81FPS
E8400 @ 3.6GHz 82FPS
Supreme Commander
Q6600 @ 2.4GHz 71FPS
E8400 @ 3.6GHz 81FPS
Unreal Tournament 3
Q6600 @ 2.4GHz 125FPS
E8400 @ 3.6GHz 133FPS

Not entirely what I'd call "huge" ;) Feel free to read it yourself. :)

dude, at one point or another, SOMETHING is gonna be a bottleneck - there is always a bottleneck :p

what do you recommend then at that pricepoint? a dual core??

yes exactly. the extra fps doesn't justify it - it's better to have a quadcore for WHEN you decide to encode, or have multiple apps running, etc...

Nope a q6600 :p, like i said it won't be as bad at bottlenecking sounds :p, see the price point could look alot different 1 month from now. I have the money for a new i7 pc but i am waiting for AMD because if its a good product may be worth buying if its a decent product it should make intel drop pricing :).

Precisely. I'm not going to keep arguing my point, my recommendation is the Q6600. :)

Ok, fair enough killadoob.

Techie, you think the prices have a good chance of dropping by mid-january?

EDIT: maybe i can then rather get a good 45nm quad, for the same price that a q6600 is now?

We might see a small drop by then, though I don't think it will be very substantial. We're probably going to see quite a nice price drop on the i7 range before we see a major drop on the Core2 range. :o

Wait and see, maybe I'm wrong and we see a 50% price drop :D

It would have been nice to see if they OCed the Q6600 as well. But from what I've seen, I should have gotten the Q6600 and OC it. E8400=Fail at 3.6Ghz with the 4870x2. :( Thanx for ruining my day. :D

That'll teach you not to do your research beforehand :p

I still covet your PC... :p

I know, but when I bought my pc in March, it was the last buy for a long time... I got my pension money and used quite a big amount to purchase this pc. I did my research back then and the E8400 looked like a better buy than the Q6600. I wasn't even thinking of OCing and back then I had 2x 8800GTX's.

Now, this is going to bug me, cause everytime I play FC2 and GTA4 and it lags for just a bit, I will remember this and think to myself that I should make a plan to get a quad core cpu.

lol...

all you need to know is corsair psu's are king. don't get fooled by fancy looking cables, or monitoring software, or fan lights.

the corsair i'm looking at has no software & no lights. just 1 big black fan that runs cool, loads of power (its a 1000w but they say corsair went conservative on the label and it's actually more, like a 1120W) and the cables are flat (can bend around your case like you want it) and a heap of cables...

the corsairs are competitively priced as well !

Soz dude, we hijacked your thread again. :D But I am sure you know what you need to do now?

Lol you remember the last time:D
Haha nah no worries, its interesting.
Yeah i am just going to try with the adapter, ille post pics this weekend if the thing blows up and simultaniously turns into a rather large bonfire, in which case i will just jump into it and let it consume me

Hahaha, nah man, don't spoil the fire, call me, I will bring over some meat and we can have a lekker braai. :D
