I looked into that. The road handling was a little vague in the reviews.
Wasn't so much about the money but more the practicality. However when someone suggested a Versys and I looked at the price I was shocked. Almost 50k less than most the others I had been looking at. I think its a bargain.

Edit: The Africa Twin does look amazing though.
 
Mike, that's completely up to you as a rider. If you feel confident enough on the road, and feel you're mentally prepared to handle a 600, then by all means go for it. Sooner than end of the year should be fine. I myself am planning my upgrade to a CBR600, as son as I can get finance. Maybe even higher, who knows....

Which year model are you looking at? I was going to buy a tail tidy and frame sliders for my bike and some other mods but decided to save my money. I'm not keeping this bike long anyway. Just need to repair my left fairing.

I'm looking at 08-13 model CBR, but they fairly hard to come by. I want a completely stock standard bike, no mods whatsoever, which makes the search very hard. Also been looking at the 06-10 GSXR600. Nice looking this that
 
So a question for the more experienced riders out there. Seeing as the rainy season I'd approaching, any advice for us newer riders?

Well firstly get the proper gear for the job. You need to be warm. Being cold is bad, especially when it comes to hands and feet as it's not only going to slow down your responsiveness but it's also quite distracting.

1. Avoid painted lines and man hole covers as well as other metal stuff like bridge struts and the like. These become ninja slippery.

2. Ride at 80% of what you usually do. Smooth on the throttle and smooth OFF the throttle...it's as important coming off as coming on as just closing it pitches all the weight onto the front tyre and off the rear.

3. Learn to brake properly. That means NOT grabbing at it. You want to touch your front brake lightly so that the suspension compressed and the weight moves forward slowly then SQUEEZE the brake further. Never grab at it. This applies equally in the dry for better braking.

4. If someone told you to only use your rear brake or use it more than your front....go smack them with a cast iron frying pan right now. Your front brake is your friend and your rear brake is only there for additional stability or specific situations. In reality you want a 80/20 front to rear and maybe 70/30 in the rain but what you definitely never want is too much rear brake especially while cornering as all the weight has lifted off and it will step out. There is a good reason the front has a massive disc on...it's the one that works better.

Other than that just take it easy. Focusing on getting to the other side alive, not getting there faster. If you know you are already late...just deal with it, don't try to beat the clock. Just accept it and cruise along.

In general if you have decent and well maintained tyres your bike will be just fine in the wet, it's your actions that ultimately determine the outcome.

Why completely stock standard?

Yes you'll have a hard time finding those, which is why I ask the question.

An slip-on exhaust and an air filter swop in the bike world is still pretty stock. You'll also find more than likely the owner has the stock pipe if you really want to put it back.
 
Hey Everyone

Im pretty sold on a Verysys 650 ( Old Spec 2014 ) But new. They have them on special at Suzuki South.
Anyways, Ive riddena few bikes the last three weeks BMW, Triumph Honda etc. I would have gone for the 800 GS Adventure but its just too wide. Its a beast in traffic ( Well for me anyways )

I come from a Motocross background and changed over to super bikes. I sold my last firebalde about a year ago and have been bikeless since. I have recently moved and the traffic is ridiculous. Takes me close to an hour and twenty minutes to get to work.

Anyways, out of the bikes I drove the Versys just sort of seemed to be happy. It can do a bit of touring but is also quite happy in the traffic at low speeds. I saw a few guys mention the ER6, they are also nice but I wanted somerhing that I could take on a dirt road and not worry too much.

Its good to be back on a bike though. I've missed it.

I can't imagine that the 800GS is any wider than the Versys at it's widest point which is more than likely the mirrors.

It is a bit taller though but in the real world I don't see much between the two from a size point of view.


Also remember the GS has more technology on board to keep you safe. The Versys only has ABS...and I'm not even sure about that since Kawasaki is weird with the ER6 series like that.

Also dealer support from Donford is miles beyond Suzuki South and bizarrely will be cheaper, but the GS costs more new of course.

For some strange reason, I have a thing for factory stock bikes. Yes, a slip on pipe might make the bike more manly, so to speak, but I still prefer stock exhaust. I might consider a high screen as the CBR600s have a fairly low screen...

I thought the same until I drove it. It was the Adventure so it was quite a bit wider. Its most certainly taller than the versys as I struggled to keep both feet flat on the ground without adjusting the suspension ( ESA is great ) Donford are great I must be honest. I actually had a look there. I think one of the reasons for me not going the BMW route was because I know I would never use the bike to its full capabilities with regards to the offraod side of things. Its really a nice bike though.

Yeah the Adventure is much wider/bigger by definition to your person but should be the same in traffic.

Why not look at the F700 then?
 
I think it would be a great beginners bike yes.
I am not a beginner though but as I said it really does tick all the boxes.

It holds its own in veteran hands too.

I've chased some Gixxers with an ER6 before.

Sure you aren't going to pass them, but being in their mirrors pisses them off enough.

Depending on the size of the bollocks, you could easily pass them. If it's nice and twisty.

Well yes it you assume inferior riders.

But decent riders on those bikers are going to rape you.

The horsepower deficit is just too much.

Down franshoek pass or something similar it could be done. The lighter more agile bike coupled with a better rider and it should be easy. On the straights you will be left for dead.

Compared to the other bikes I have owned the Versys doesn't stand much of a chance in a *Race*
That being said I agree that it wont be a shameful defeat, the Versys can keep up to an extent, its actually not a bad motor.

It handles really well. Some say even better than an er 6n due to the upgraded suspension.
