Also GS Traders in Bellville. Again no personal experience.

From my limited experience they are pretty good. I was already out of the country but my dad took my bike there to sell it - GS traders paid the same day and organised all the transfer admin. The price I got was pretty darn decent too

When I looked at this previously, I recall the NCs being one of the standout options, definitely.

That being said, I also quite like the idea of doing some interesting trips with the thing, so it might make sense to look at something that can handle the wilds.

*edit*

At this point, my first main consideration is finding a good dealer, so I can get a sense of prices and options, the actual bike itself will follow from this.

If you are looking used then imo you need to decide on a bike before a dealer, likewise if you are buying new a bike will result in a different dealer a

I think the exact opposite.

Dealer obviously limits the scope of bikes available but you are buying into something for 3,5 or even longer years and want someone who can walk that road with you.

So a dealer that sells you the bike and supports the bike with any potential niggles, or better through proper process lowers the risk of niggles in the first place is worth their weight in gold.

Generally dealers don’t like to support bikes all that much which were procured elsewhere and then made their problem.

So so, I get your opinion, but I personally feel like deciding on what you want then looking for a good one

When I first started riding bikes it was all about the bike.

Over time one learnt that I would happily compromise the bike in favour of a great dealership experience.

Which is why I have a BMW and not a Ducati.

I service my own bike now thanks to bad experience so besides for the buying experience meh

Yeah in that case I would imagine it doesn’t matter to you.

Not the case for most though.

And if I had to service myself I’d probably also compromise a lot on bike choice in favour of easily maintainable design.

Would probably settle for an air cooled BMW boxer then.

Some of these Harleys are so wide! How do you guys turn?

Width isn’t an issue, it’s really just the lowest point that matters.

Most of them have more than enough ground clearance to scrape the pegs happily.

Ok, hands up: who rode a 50cc or a 125 in high school?

I had a Honda MBX which I swapped for a Suzuki Gamma at some stage, I also inherited my brothers RZ (he had a full fairing on it that acted like a fscking sail in the Cape Town wind!)

Kazuma 125 "dual sport"

Spotted at the CTICC today.

What is the general opinion of the v-strom 650 here? Would it be a better starter bike than an F800gs? Primarily some long distance commuting with occasional adventure riding, i`d like to take it to the middle of nowhere on some dirt roads in the northern cape.

After i serviced it The bike feels so much smoother, the chain adjustment attributed to that too. Back on fully synthetic oil too.
Somehow, the engine braking is reduced also. All in all she feels so good, took the chain guards off and cleaned the chain paste buildup and the kick stand spring and hinge, even the stand is smoother and a lot less effort to put down now.

a good chain cleaning and lube with adjustment can even do that, when i get a new chain it is like riding a new bike!

speaking of which, my bike is really getting along, needs some tlc but man i really want a new secondary

Yeah, I got a paddock stand so I was able to clean and re lube properly. I think that and the new oil made a difference.

to be fair though, some of it is also probably psychological...

i use a front fork stand for the back because the nc doesnt have regular bobbin holes

Much of a muchness really. But I will say of the few people I know who had a V-strom 650 it was all short lived before they bought a GS800 anyway.

The GS is quite tall in standard trim though so if you are exceptionally short that would be a worry.
