Honda NC750 is a great bike and also on the cheap. That "frunk" is a game changer for your day to day riding.

KTM I wouldn't touch with a barge pole, but largely because dealer support in Cape Town sucks.

I'm going to sound like a fanatic now but I've been through them all and short of Harley...BMW is simply out of everyone else's class. I wish I had known this years ago but there is a very good reason people buy them and keep buying them.

It's not all about the bikes, but largely the dealership experience.

If I replayed my (primary) bike life now I would buy a BMW from the start and ignore the rest.

That being said the Cape Town motorcycle dealership experience is very lacking and I know Jo'burg is a whole different ball game. I've had pleasant experiences at both Harley and Ducati in Jo'burg.

I will second that. BMW service is great! Just love going there, they make you feel at home :) I had a NC750 X before and it was a great bike. Nice bike to do a small shopping run with. The frunk is quite spacious and I could stuff quite a bit of shopping in there. I would buy another one if I could :)

Hey! Watch it buddy.
Screw the dealership - find a reputable mechanic.
You're buying a bike for the bike, not the dealership experience.

Also fixed something for you ;)

So later on this afternoon I'll be riding from the vaal to Jhb, traffic is going to be a nightmare if this train continues so I'll use the bike. This'll be my first ride in the rain if it's still raining at that time. Besides slowing down are there any do's and don'ts of riding in the rain? Only had my bike a few months now so I might not know even the simplest of rules.

First things first...Mr Min your visor (or get C-Thru/Rainex in future). If you can't see you can't ride.

Speed isn't so much a problem, it's just that sudden actions like hard acceleration or hard braking are exacerbated by the loss of grip on wet roads.

So the key is to be smooth in all things. Steering, throttle, brakes whatever. Sure you need to apply this the rest of the time anyway, but it's more important than ever.

Keep using your rear brakes but be careful of really putting pressure down on them.

Learn to 2-finger brake (in general) and to "squeeze" instead of pull. Ultimately you want to give a little initial brake to compress the forks AND THEN put the real pressure on. If the forks are compressed you can pretty much brake into infinitely with modern tyres.

The reason people crash when panic braking is because the forks never compressed and that means no weight ever transferred to the front of the bike and therefore no downforce is applicable on the front tyre....so it slides.

As everyone has said avoid painted lines and man hole covers and the like, especially under braking.

Don't ride in the middle of the lane...not in rain or shine actually.

And gear up. If you are cold you are responding more slowly. The more snug you are in the right gear the better you can ride.

Keep lane splitting, don't become a car just because it's raining. You are way more likely to be rear ended because cars can't see you in the rain.

And beyond everything else make sure your lights work.

I ride with these throughout the year and love them to bits. They're fantastic. :)

If it's frowned upon to post up Classifieds queries here, please reply as such and I'll remove this...

Other than the BMW Motorcycle Club in the Cape, are there any other BMW groups in the area? I need to replace my own jacket, but have some BMW gear (inherited from a larger family member) that I need to sell first...$$$. Two jackets and trousers...and possibly a set of winter gloves.

Thanks.

If the winter gloves fit keep them. They are awesome in cold weather riding.

Can I join with my modified GX650. Had a CBR250R before, some bigger before that.
Never thought I would like Kawa as all my previous bikes where Honda

They're a bit too restrictive for me. My personal preference is for my Richas. :) I've never really battled with cold hands, despite being a perennial commuter in Cape Town.

The winter gloves were my fathers. I think he'd have had an electric blanket on his bike if it were possible. Haha.

Low : Rain right now. ****.

Drinking game while you wait for the track to dry:

Every time you see a GS you have to drink a SHOT!!!

And some of those GS's will overtake the S1000's on the inside of the corner.

Yup.

Seen it many times before.

But very sedate in the rain today. Actually a good thing as it's much more training focused.

About the most eventful it got today from a drama point of view.

I was a little pissed off that the fast guys just bumped down into the slow class on my last session to get more track time due to the rain, but moaned about it so that I hopefully doesn't happen in the future.

Really surprised by the amount of women there. Some really impressive and some on completely the wrong bikes for their skill levels.

My heart skipped a beat for your sake

Ha ha. It's actually much less drama in the seat.

Video after the fact is where my heart skips a beat as you literally see it pivot.

And I laugh at myself for "indicator chexking" twice in 30 seconds on a race track.

Just didn't expect it on that corner as it's banked, so you expect to have much more lean.

I see a 2014 KTM 690 duke for sale for R100k on gumtree...

A brand new 2016 model cost R110K ( and brand new 2015 cost R100k), so I ask him how much they cost in 2014.
He replies R140k. Lol either he is Nigerian or trying to take someone for a ride...

Think when I get my next ride I am going to go to fire it up. Seems gumtree is too risky.
