My bad . The first Ducati dealership in the cape was run in the bo Kaap area when the 999 was everyone's wet dream.. I rode the first multistrada 620 about 2004/5 and it was downright hideous compared to the Tiger which was then 700 cc I think. Mine was one of two yellow 1999 Tiger models in the cape
They closed for a while if I recall and now you say they reopened in the waterfront and now they reopen again!! Third time lucky or bust. They are technically still owned by Volkswagen which owns Audi no direct link to Audi at all.
Re : Harley - yes I am correct two locations one after the other I forgot to add - much of a muchness with the current BMW boutique layout but alas it didn't work for them and their machines are almost in identical exotic price bracket as Ducati but older ridership and brand loyalty governed by hog membership . Linex Yamaha (failed) used to be in the current Triumph dealership which actually began as Pure Kawasaki dealership. Triumph was never embraced by Mike Hopkins. They started with a few models at their old Bree st store and even considered ditching triumph at one point - how they acquired Triumph was simply because the single existing triumph agent was the first outfit to offer off-road tours and he battled to sell the brand after his partner was killed in the Isle of Man TT in late 1990s
Triumph was pulled from Johann and Hopkins took the brand but not happily.
Triumph had some successes and was fairly well priced but I think they grew too fast too quick and their prices became well stupid/ not just for bikes but for clothing and parts - an example- sissy bars for the rocket were 3000k 4 years ago and the same ones are now 8000k Rand ! You can get these imported yourself for 2000k !
The explorer entered a crowded off road market and the rest of Triumphs later line up was poorly chosen for the SA market ( personal opinion) in fact there's no Model I'd want now unless I wanted to look like a pretentious twit on a scrambler for the city.
No wonder sales are slow but they were never fantastic. If you look at the prices of clothing in triumph and BMW it's funny how top and bottom riding gear will set one back 10k just for starters ! Nobody has that kind of money lying around for a secondary form of transport
And Ducati is in my further opinion downright stupid to consider opening a third time after getting their butts kicked twice already.
My bet they will close within 2-3 years Again.
We have a saturated market for expensive toys which is what these are at best.
Daily commuters are the brave few risking life and limb every day and are an absolute minority of riders.
But whatever - the more eye candy the better . Good luck to them. One can be 100% sure prices will be no
Cheaper than any other exotic brand now selling or sitting gathering dust whatever the case may be.

^^^ The 1999 Tiger was a 955 motor, the same as in the Daytona/Sprint.

I have also been told that by end 2017 there will only be 2 Official Triumph dealerships, one in Jozi (4ways) & one in CT. Even Traditional will be gone. Something to do with store/brand requirements. Seems crazy considering Traditional have been top dealer for 15 years running.

Yeah that sounds more right and the original Multistrada was horrible indeed.

They basically shipped out their existing customers to Julian at Something Superbikes in Somerset West and then over time started Parking demos and staff there as a satellite Johannesburg shop. You actually bought the bike in Jo’burg and they couriered and delivered for you down here but with full warranty backing.

Yeah globally.

But in SA the entire Ducati outfit is part of Porsche.

Have they closed shop? I heard many rumours of how badly they were being run even before the move and had personal experience as well with my Buell.

Partly why I think Tygervalley took the chance and they are booming.

Wasn’t there some kind of foul play and forced shutdown involved with Linex?

I know Mike Hopkins didn’t embrace Triumph too strongly at first but now it’s pretty much their primary pitch.

Partly because Triumph themselves significantly matured, but also because Suzuki South turned into Kawa and Aprilia South which all comes through KMSA.

Hey it’s primary for some of us.

I don’t mind paying for quality, but Triumph gear never inspires that.

My BMW boots were quite reasonable actually and couldn’t find much else for similar or less.

Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Like I said this isn’t so much a new shop as expanding for an existing customer base.

As long as they keep it low key and don’t go nuts they u be fine.

Also there are a lot more models in the market for them now to bring in more customers so the niche isn’t as small as before.

Douglasdale is full of suicidal morons it seems. The other day on my way home I saw a guy giving his (I'm assuming) garden boy a lift to the make shift taxi rank on a scooter - no gear whatsoever. No gloves, helmets, jackets - nothing.

Even worse, this morning I nearly went into a guy who is cruising around in the dark with no headlight. Luckily I heard him.

One would think so but Tigers came in several models and prior to 1999-2001 modern tigers were 885cc
And in 1999 The new bubble shape Tiger era was ushered in with a heavily revised fuel injected
885 motor. Mine was one of a handful of these new design body and revised 885s
The 955i was released a year or three later ( memory fails ) but the body design remained essentially the same until the release of the Explorer which is very different from any previous Tiger.

There was once only ever Two dealers - one in Jhb and the other in CT and everything came through KMSA
Personally I think it's a good thing they plan to scale back dealers because it always has and always will be a niche brand
That somehow is more refined than the mass market bikes but instead of sitting with a stable of solid triple performers and revising these
And further developing their race heritage as a brand, Triumph have in the past decade or so, adopted a scattergun approach to churning out new Hickney models all over the spectrum- diluting their strengths and there's just not the market.
Like the original rocket3 which was a wonderful clean sheet design - Triumph engineers should perhaps focus on innovation rather than dredging up retro rubbish.

Well, yesterday I was so happy to be on a bike going home. R21 furked. people getting off the highway by using the on ramp as a off ramp :wtf:

When I eventually got the scene of the accident they were just busy opening up the highway..... all that was left was a bike... split in half

And you have these guys (two of them) on ThinkBike driving around with blue lights on their bikes. The one posted a video of a female cop stopping him and threatening to confiscate his bike, siad he understood and removed them but "didn't think it would be such a big deal". Another guy has a switch on his bike - claims people see him better and he probably won't remove them.

These are the type of bikers that give bikers a "bad name"

Traffic lights out on Jan smuts.
Left home after my wife, I was at work before she covered 1km

N1 by Rivonia was stuffed. People driving like tossers because of an accident.

Took me 10 extra minutes to get to work.

Video link?
Traffic police would jail those idiots in Cape Town

great video . The sad thing is that it took a Superintendent to be able to stop and recite chapter and verse then give perfectly valid
Reasons why blue lights are unlawful - something apparently other traffic cops missed for a whole year.- possibly because they were non flashing - just park lights
I believe the rider honestly had no clue otherwise he'd never have posted his stupidity in a video.
i dunno where she got the bit about most bikers buying licenses though !

Pretty sure there's questions in the K53 tests about the permitted colour of lights in vehicles.

Front you're only allowed amber and white
Rear amber and red, or something like that.
