I got clipped on my right leg and foot.

We're doing 30kmh and I'm next to the guy. A space quickly opens up to my left while lane splitting, the guy lane changes from the right and clips me with front fender.

I even see his passenger turning her face away and shouting at him.

I do a slow mo' speed wobble but kept up right. Traded a little paint but nothing to serious.

My calf muscle and pinkie toe is a little eina. Thank goodness for proper riding boots.

Glad you're okay. That could have ended badly! The idiot should have kept his eyes open in the first place
 
Thanks man.

Old guy didn't check his side mirror otherwise he would see me through his passenger window. Probably just check his rear view and saw the gap.

We pull over he asked if it's just my leg hurting, he checks his car, pointing out the rear fender dent. I'm like no way sir check the front, that dent has rust around where the paint came off.

I hobble back to the bike to remove the key, and the guy calmly drove off.
 
lucky it wasn't worse! any accident you can walk away from is a good one. highway riding gives me the creeps.

Eish glad it was a small one.

Reminds me of an "accident" I had a few years ago with my Buell.

Heading up the hill towards Somerset West from Stellenbosch stop at the traffic light lane splitting and there is this GTI next to in the right lane but about a meter back.

Ex girlfriend was on the back so I didn't launch it hard but for some reason this Oupa in his GTI reckoned we are having a dice and somehow manages to clip his bumper on the rear footpeg.

I didn't even realise anything was happening until I was in what can only be described as a sideways drift and then a sudden release and I pulled over on the side of the road.

This old man and his hysterical wife are immediately accusing me of having drifted into their car and "you bikers riding wherever you want" and looking at his car you can literally see how he came from behind me and opened his entire left front side like it was a bloody can opener.

My bike had a black mark on from presumably the tyre touching it but no harm done (later found my girlfriend's foot had been "pinched" a bit even with boots on) so I took some photos and then I was on my way.

Months later I get a very threatening email from Santam who want to sue me for causing an accident and their client wanting to claim R36000 or some such from me but the entire letter was a complete fabrication of the event stating it happened in Durbanville and all sorts of other ***.

Fortunately one of the photos I had taken had a road sign in the background which made it clear as day where it was. Forwarded all that with a Google Maps link to my insurance and told them this was 100% his own fault and he out rightly lied about the whole thing.

Never heard about it again.
 
hehe love that story, similarly I t-boned a car cutting in front of me coming about a complex doing about 80ks and hours. fortunately launched myself and went right over the roof. guy claimed to his insurance later it was my fault as I was overtaking at speed and I rode into him and he had right of way. etc etc. luckily I took pictures of my 20 metres tyre skid mark on the road leading to his car showing I had right of way and which side of the road I was on.
 
Its for reasons like these i keep all recordings from my riding, i have over 400gb of video footage, just in case something pops out of the woodwork later on.

I'm looking for a camera setup now. Not sure what will be best, helmet cam, body cam, steering cam... Makes and models?

I struck gold with mine. I got a Garmin virb for R1300 on Takealot unboxed deals 1.5years ago. Waterproof without a car, shoots 720p60, battery lasts MUCH longer than competitors, has one large button for instant power on and record, works well when wearing gloves. Was a great buy. That said it is a old camera now but it's still awesome.

I'd only get a body or steering cam after having a helmet cam. Purely for being able to follow my head and not the bike.

You want something that can record 60 FPS or higher. 30 FPS is not clear enough with all the moving of the head.
 
I see City of Cape Town is perpetuating the dislike of bikes and misinformation about lane splitting.

On their N2 signs today it read "Motorcycles : Same road, same rules"

This blows my mind. I would honestly have thought that in one of the most congested cities in the world (sure I read that somewhere), they would encouraging people to get out of their cars and onto bikes. But if a biker is going to have to sit in a lane behind the car in front of him in traffic, then what's the fcking point? Might as well take the car...

Well that's my problem with the statement.

Even as a motorcyclist who knows lane splitting is legal i don't understand their message.

And motorists are going to read it completely wrong.

Don't suppose you managed to get proof he was there (video or a witness)? I would have a field day reporting that guy for whatever I legally could.

Irrespective of whether you want to lay charges against the guy for fleeing the scene, I hope you reported the accident to police and insurance? Plenty of *censored* people out there, you don't want to get a call 6 months later and sit with a claim against yourself

Yes the laws still apply to us as it should, and them making the assumption that just because we're bikers, we think the rules dont apply to us? **** THEM.

Why are people so quick to get belligerent? Perhaps there has been an uptick of motorcycle related incidents of which riding dangerously was the primary cause of the accident. Plenty of stories continually doing the rounds of riders did this, that and the next thing. Are they the minority? I'm not so sure anymore, especially with all these suicidal delivery scooters appearing all over the show. Understand that you may not be the issue, and you wouldn't need to raise your BP to over 9000
 
There was a motorcyclist on the N1 yesterday throwing middle fingers and fists at every second car not moving over for him while lane splitting... really bad image being given while none of the drivers did anything wrong.

And I can't think of any way to deal with someone like that so just passed him to not have to look at him.
