Name and Shame: Unauthorised Debit Orders Thread

Also had this show up via fnb app notification this morning. I reversed and blocked it and reported via email to pasa. Hopefully this will help...

I am with FNB, also had a R99.00 debit order. Stopped it and will be charged R6.00 by FNB to stop it. It is ridiculous that we have to pay. Think the banks allow this, just think 1mil fraud cases at R6.00 and the banks make a quick R6 000 000.00

Nedbank have told me I have to prove it was not an authorized debit order if I want to avoid the reversal charge. I have asked for clarity as to how I prove this, since by definition there is no documentation and I have never heard of the people who fraudulently charged my account.

Since I just got a call that my card was also illegally used online and is being canceled, I will have to go to the bank next week to get my new card and will complain directly to a manager while I am there. It's outrageous that people can take money from your account without having to give a shred of proof that they have your permission and you have to prove they did not *or* get charged for the privilege of not letting them steal your money.

There is no charge from fnb to reverse a debit order less than R200. Screenshot_20181103-103918_Twitter.jpeg

Whether it is no cost or not via FNB is NOT VERY COMFORTING. This is NOT the first time I have had dodgy debit order off my account. On a previous occasion I also found a similiar unauthorised debit order from my FNB account. The question is WHAT ARE OUR SOUTH AFRICAN BANKS DOING ABOUT THIS SCAM. Sticking your heads in the sand apparently. The debit order system clearly has some major problems with it because the criminals are doing what they like!

Just saw the notification on my FNB app. I am in the bloody UK. Going to stop and dispute the debit order. how is it that all of us have been hit simultaneously?!? data breach somewhere.

Yes, completely broken. We have a system where adding payment beneficiaries to my account requires direct approval via my phone even though I'm logged in to my online banking using 3 pieces of identity information known only to me. Where at least sometimes when buying online I have to verify. Where the fraud department knows before I do that there have been suspicious online purchases and proactively calls me and the transactions are blocked. But debit orders require no validation at all.

The question is, what can we do? I plan to bring this up directly with my bank when I go in next week but that's not enough.

My FNB account was also debited last night with R99 reference: UPS NCONNUPS15_ -. This morning I disputed it and stopped it. FNB must try and charge me for this, I will fight them. How do they allow unauthorised debit orders on our accounts, and then potentially want to charge us for someone to not steal our money. No!!

Regarding the person with the comment: "There is no charge from fnb to reverse a debit order less than R200." quoting a tweet from RbJacobs.

THIS IS WHAT IT SAYS WHEN YOU SELECT THE DISPUTE OPTION ON FNB. READ CAREFULLY. WORD FOR WORD QUOTE FROM FNB WEBSITE. Even if they don't charge they should make it more apparent on the page where you click dispute.

  • FNB is not a party to the contract between you and the creditor/service provider. As your bank, it is important that FNB process any debits in compliance with Payments Association of South Africa.
  • FNB will charge you fees for the reversal instruction, even if the reversal instruction was not successful. Visit www.fnb.co.za and view FNB's latest pricing guide.

The real joke is when I click dispute and try and reverse the debit order I get the following:

Some errors have occurred...
(E-99051) Async final reply not received yet

Isn't dealing with banks really fun!

I disputed the debit order this morning, the funds is already back in my account. However I think its because I did this very early this morning. As more people wake up to this surprise, something must have happened and something triggered on the bank side with the large amount of debit order reversals coming in.

Online with fnb now, I have the same deduction from my account, grrr.

Ok, so they stopped and reversed this nonsense. The gentleman that assisted me stated that their IT department is aware of this and are currently investigating.
He could unfortunately not see where or from who this debit originated, only that it was from business online.

Also got hit this morning, was so annoyed when the app didn't work, but somehow even though there was an error, got a message later saying it was reversed

What I find very strange about this, is that the last legitimate debit order I had go through about a year ago, FNB send me a confirmation request before processing the debit order, so why did I not get that confirmation request with this scam debit order?
Are these banks happy to let these go through in the hopes of increasing profits through fees?

same here...had R99.had to reverse at ABSA. couple of people had same issue who was in the queue ...this can be a good one for mybb to investigate

I am with Standard Bank - same debit order sms notification this morning. Called their "query" line. They reversed the R99 immediately (confirmed by further sms). Told me that they have numerous complaints this morning and are investigating the matter.

I managed to reverse, I keep pressing button even after they say (E-99051) Async final reply not received yet . Finally one async call went through and the money bank into my account.
