Name and Shame: Unauthorised Debit Orders Thread

On further reading it looks like debicheck is what's needed to get the bank to authorize with you first and, get this, it's optional for companies to use debicheck.

It should absolutely not be optional for the bank to process a debit order without first verifying it is legitimate and companies should not get to decide that it is.

Correct. Guys read more here: https://www.debicheck.co.za/pages/yourQuestions.html

Specifically this Q&A:
Q: Why can’t I use DebiCheck for ALL debit orders?
A: This is definitely a long term goal for the South African Reserve Bank and the Payment Association of South Africa. Unfortunately, due to the number of debit orders and entities involved in these processes, this will have to be done in a phased approach.

Whether it is no cost or not via FNB is NOT VERY COMFORTING. This is NOT the first time I have had dodgy debit order off my account. On a previous occasion I also found a similiar unauthorised debit order from my FNB account. The question is WHAT ARE OUR SOUTH AFRICAN BANKS DOING ABOUT THIS SCAM. Sticking your heads in the sand apparently. The debit order system clearly has some major problems with it because the criminals are doing what they like!

I feel your pain. I feel like visiting pasa personally to speak to someone. Surely they should be investigating.
They are close to JHB CBD for those of you close enough and wanting to pay them a visit: http://www.pasa.org.za/contact-us

Those that cannot visit please send email to [email protected]

...the problem is not with the banks but with intermediaries like pasa. But I also feel banks can do more...

Scammed on 2/11; same MO: UPS NCONNUPS15 debit for R99; bank with Standard;
Banks cannot abdicate responsibility by shrugging this off as mere processing; they and FSB need to nail this company and its instigators, who clearly are running a deliberate scheme with intent to defraud? How do they secure the relevant banking details in the first place to run the debit?

I only have debit orders set up with telkom and cell c. I would start my investigations there, some piece of s**t is selling personal info to these criminals.

well does everyone have or had debit orders with them? can eliminate them if not. i have had with both.
and still have with telkom.

I also think a company with valid bank account numbers lost their client data.

No one in my house has debit orders with either Telkom or cell c and we have also not been affected by this unauthorised debit order problem.

if i would eliminate from your scenario, then it would point to telkom...i dont have cellc

Your account number doesn't necessarily need to have been leaked by an entity like. Telkom... These twats get them from many places or guess them since they follow a pattern

I hear you but would be interesting to know if everyone affected has or had a d/o with telkom....

My telkom d/o goes off on 15th of month and unauthorized D/o went off on 18th Oct when this thread was started

The 2nd run of unauthorized debit orders wen off on 2nd Nov - maybe these people had telkom d/o on 1st?

Would be interesting to know....

Common thread seems to be Telkom.

Anyone have an unauthorised debit order who is not a Telkom debit order customer?

The banks should be able to do this with a simple query across all their accounts (which had the fraudulent activity) and easily identify the other common debit company. Whether they do actually do this though would be another story.

On my sms it only states UPS NCONNUPS and the amount is R99, so it is clearly a fraudulent deduction. Anybody else have this from the same 'company'?
I am with Standard Bank, my plan is to go to the branch and ask them to reverse it, even though some say I need to call the people that deducted the money, how the EFF is this possible?

Any advice, thanks.

UPDATE - So STD Bank reversed the R99, but the lady also told me 'it will probably happen again as they have my details now', so, not very comforting.
I know I can literally not do anything about it, but should I be worried that 'they' will open and MAX Edgars, Vodascum, etc accounts now that they 'have my details'?
My conclusion is that the banks love these things, as apparently they charge the legit customer a reversal fee, can they be any more greedy?
Do you have a telkom debit order?
