Need ADSL but

2 year's ago Ive ordered a 2mbps dsl line from Telkom, i got free installation,no deposit and a router. Everything was month to month, i then after 3 months cancel the isp side and use my own, and that was 100 with Telkom.

I'm still undecided, i contacted a few adsl suppliers and see what happens from there onwards. That R499 uncapped Wifi seems so attractive, no installation fees, free calls (weekends) but no sign of it on their website. So just waiting, the R465 deal for uncapped 4mbps is also on my list although the installation fee of R600+ is making this deal bad

I also just realised that i have to not only pay R166 for telkom voice line but also to enable ADSL line rental ( i'm guessing that's another fee)

although this deal from afrihost seems good :

Price : R349
Speed : 2Mbps
Includes Telkom ADSL line rental
Does not include voice line rental
Uncapped *

So the price will be R349 + R166 (telkom line rental) = R515

since they include the adsl line rental.

just not sure how bad the speed will be throttled too.

Mweb has the same which includes ADSL LINE RENTAL but cheaper at R339

I'll have to just pay voice line and buy a modem/router i suppose

4Mbps uncapped through Telkom on the Simple deal costs R790/month, including unlimited weekends and evenings Telkom to Telkom landline calls (i.e. includes their 'Weekends & Evenings' bolt-on calling package). Weirdly enough although you get the wifi router for free, you'll need to buy a landline phone for yourself.

Installation is also free, the technician came up and set me up less than a week after I'd placed my order :) As mentioned above with the 2Mbps option (which I was initially on before upgrading), there's also no contract, but you do need to provide a 30 day notice before cancelling (I did this a month ago - found that Telkom's 4Mbps service was buffering 80% of the time).

If you can live with capped, go for the 20GB 4Mbps Simple deal ... only R599, and your line performance should be a bit better because you're not in the uncapped pool.

NB: It is *extremely* important to your future happiness that you are with the technician and test that your line is working before he leaves. Friends of mine have spent ages fighting with Telkom after that initial installation didn't go as expected.
I'm a new Telkom 4mb uncapped subscriber, can you tell me how many GB one can download before being throttled?

110gb, maybe more but if it's p2p traffic then I doubt you'll even reach that.

Are you sure you aren't talking about a 2mb uncapped account?I used to pull off 180gb per month on a 1mb uncapped account from my old isp.

You'll get way more than that if you schedule your downloads to run during nightsurfer (00:00 - 07:00).

I'm seriously thinking downgrade from 4mb Telkom Simple Uncapped Plus (R770/m) to 4mb Simple Plus 20GB soft cap (R500/m).If Telkom throttle 4mb uncapped at 250GB limit ,then with Simple Plus I could get monthly midnight-6am usage of 240GB and 20GB soft cap=260GB

Someone recently reported doing almost 400GB on a similar Telkom Simple package with proper planning - can't find the thread now.

Never used p2p software.(every time no speed) I use jdownloader 95% of the time and then IDM. I will be very satisfied if I just could get 350GB per month.

Tried contacting Openweb , they seemed really pricey compared to other suppliers :/

Do not touch Openweb. Check the truth about Openweb thread and/or the feedback thread.

Thanks, anyone using Mweb??

I found a deal there that looks good.

uncapped 2mbps + adsl line = 339

i think i just have to pay R166 to telkom voice line and buy a adsl modem

is this correct? theres no other fees?

I spoke to mweb earlier this week on behalf of client, and they gave her a router for free with that 2 uncapped deal. So yes, Telkom line rental + Mweb deal
