Hi.

I just formatted an old Pentium 4 PC, and did a clean installation of Windows XP Pro with SP3. The PC is a Mecer desktop machine.

I now need drivers for the Ethernet Controller, as windows did not pick it up and install it automatically, and I don't have any driver disks either.

In the device manager, the Ethernet Controller shows up under Other Devices with a yellow question mark next to it. If I check the properties, it doesn't give me any useful information like a name or model number (as far as I can see).

Under Other Devices, it also lists Multimedia Audio Controller and Video Controller (VGA compatible) with a yellow question mark (although the Video/Display is currently working 100%). I tried to update the drivers, asking windows to do it automatically, but this didn't work.

I'm thinking if I can at least manually install the Ethernet Driver, then I can connect the PC to my network, and let Windows connect to the internet and download the audio and video driver automatically.

Any ideas?

Is the Ethernet controller on the motherboard, or a card ?

If it's on the motherboard, check the make & model, and look that up. Alternatively, read the make & model of the ethernet card and look that up.

Should be a fairly simple process.

Ethernet port is on the motherboard. I opened up the chassis, and check the mobo, and it says Intel Desktop Board D865GLC/D865PESO

I checked the above link for the above mobo, but it isn't listed.

Will try a Google search.

Thanks guys.

Alternatively, look at the Resources tab in the Ethernet controller's Properties. Google this part of the string: VEN_xxxx&DEV_xxxx. That should point you in the right direction, then you can go to the manufacturer's website to get the correct driver.

EDIT: It's an Intel Pro NIC (vendor ID will be VEN_8086). http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=8659&ProdId=950&lang=eng. Get the latest chipset drivers while you're at it.

Thanks, but I already found it by Googling the mobo model number.

Was initially hoping for a solution like yours that didn't require me to open up the chassis (I'm lazy).

UPDATE: Download the drivers from the Intel web site, and installed them. All is working now! Thanks guys.
