I'm currently in the market for a new car and found a secondhand 2012 F20 118i M Sport

103000KM so out of Maintenance plan
Steptronic 8 speed Auto
Leather seats
iDrive
Full service history

My question, is it worth buying this car for 200K?

Any known issues with this model?

What are the avergae service costs and is it worth taking a third party warranty?

Will be getting the VIN number tomorrow and will check with the guys at BMW.

Thanks

From my understanding they're about as fast and impressive as a sloth in slow motion.

That said, it is a BMW so at least it's made well.

Just like a VW with world renowned performance and fuel economy... Oh wait..

OP, If you want to buy secondhand always go Japanese, rather get a top of the range or good Corolla, Rav 4 or Tuna for that price

The moral of the story is always to never buy what you can't yet truly afford.

Whether that means having to load up a residual that's so large that you're only renting a car, or moving into a house that is making every inch of your budget scream, just don't go there.

I wouldn't take a risk on a 3 Series, and especially not a 'boring' one like a 318i, and ESPECIALLY not an M-Sport variety (i.e. somebody pimped it because they can't afford a real sports car). If you're gonna hold a gun to your heard, at least let the prize be worthwhile the risk yes?

My advice would be to look at running costs. There are BMW run-flat tyres that cost R5 000 a pop and can only be replaced as a whole set. You get one of those cars and you're screwed.

I agree with Sugarman (funny BMW pic)

1 No it's way to much considering the mileage and year model
2.(Ask BMW)
3.Yes , anything BMW,Merc,Mini(could be missing one) will be more expensive so it will come handy in the long run.

Friendly tips : Ask the seller to meet you at a BMW dealership then let them do a quick inspection .

If it's a private sale ask the seller to let BOSCH/Dekra do a Technical and Roadworthy Inspection otherwise the bank will insist on it.

Watch out for that as is clauses you could be buying a lemon (if you want I will tell you how I bit the bullet a while ago)

In all seriousness OP. If you want to buy second hand, always go Jap. You could never go wrong. They are as reliable as the sun rising and setting, parts are easy to get and relatively cheap to replace. If you want sporty try a S2000, Civic R or anything similar.

Remember if you get the BMW, not only will you be mocked everyday of your life, the running costs are immense (from experience)

Depends on the model the running cost on the diesel is relatively cheap as u have no cam-belt and u only need to replace the filters and the most expensive is the pollen filter at R811 bucks, but like somebody said that 118 is as slow as hell

Firstly, where did you come up with the affordability cr@p? I'm putting down a deposit for 50% and the balance will be financed which won't even be more than 30% of salary.
Secondly, it's a 1 Series 118i. This is what I can afford or am willing to spend on a car.
Instead of getting a Polo or Vivo i thought that this showed much more value for money, but thanks for your input

This reeks of the "trying to impress" syndrome.
Impress who with a 1 series? As stated above the reason for looking at this, is because there is not much else in the price range.

I've always like the brand and thought why not, coming from a Merc.

Have you driven any of the new M-Sports they fun as hell.

If your heart is set on the model, I would advise the following.

Get the motor plan printout from the owner (he/she can request it from any BMW dealer) and study it under a microscope.

Check for comments (accident damage carried out under plan) and big ticket items pointing out that it might be a problematic car.

Over and above, check for obvious signs of body work and compare with MP print out.

If the owner is reluctant to share the printout, or if something doesn't check out, walk away.

Lastly, do some research on the model on forums. Check known issues, reliability, economy etc. Some members have pointed out that its not the sportiest car out there, which isn't necessarily a problem. Just make sure you understand what you are buying.

Thanks, please elaborate on this

General service over R3k. Mocking from friends etc.

I have nothing against BMW only if you buy it new, it would be the best driving experience ever. But for that price for a second hand 118i of that age and mileage?? No, over priced, if you are truly intended on getting a BMW try a 3 series, the 1 series of that era has the acceleration of a snail and the boot space of a gnat.

I don't get where all these slow comments are coming from, considering the car has 125KW

A fiesta ST has 134KW
