I bought a 7 year old BMW years ago, with 130k on the clock. Never had a single problem with it.
Same with the 5 year old 320d I bought later.

What model though? Any "sports" car tends to be more risky as the person that owned it before you probably drove the crap out of it.

My next car will either be a Honda Accord 2.4 auto or a C class Merc 200 Compressor in the 100K mark.......Just for all out there who are wondering ,,,, what I am driving now - Opel Astra 160IE and goes well (1996)

A quick search on the net shows me that you can buy the same car with less mileage (80K) for around R50K less if you drop the M package. Use the R50K saved for a decent aftermarket motor plan. Food for thought?

What would a 118i M Sports model entail, versus a regular 118i?

The person (in general, not talking about you specifically) that gets the M package are far more likely to drive it like it's stolen versus a person who gets the more conservative choice. Seems logical to me. Disagree?

Yeah, might well be. But there are generally reliable motors, and the M badge does not mean it's kitted with turbo's and other performance parts.
In my experience, the only problem I had on my BMWs was completely avoidable.

I have been looking at them 2hnd and the more entry to mid level Hondas fetch a serious premium, almost even more so than Toyota.
There is some extra engine tuning and what what, the weak link?
Very good cars I own one. I have been meaning to buy a new car but I see no value for money with these new cars. I mean a polo vivo is almost R200k. I have taken the stance that there is nothing wrong with my car so I will drive it till the wheels fall off. Rather looking into buying another property.

No, there is no engine tuning at all. They do get a stiffer suspension and some bodywork and M badges, other than that it is the exact same car mechanically.

If everyone had your outlook, BMW wouldn't be a very popular brand on our SA roads.
Last time I checked the 3 series sales is in the top 5 of all passenger cars in SA.
It's not my outlook, it's just the facts. A 318i is a 318i with the exact same mechanical components regardless of it being the base model, sport, luxury, modern, m sport or m performance spec. The "tannies" on this thread are busy going "omg it has an M in the name it must be owned by a hooligan!", meanwhile someone just preferred the look of the car with the "M Sport" bumpers on, or maybe just the feel of a different steering wheel, or maybe the dealer just said he'd throw it in.
