It's a good solid car with no particular big issues. It's maybe a little bit small inside for some and the boot isn't massive but it's a hatch and the seats fold so not likely to be a major issue. It's not even marketed as a performance car but it's got more than enough power for getting around. With that gearbox you would probably stand a pretty good chance against a fiesta ST but presumably you're not buying it for winning TLGPs.
Follow tmans advice, also check out the tyres. Since it's out of motorplan you aren't compelled to fit run flats however insurance would usually require the tyres you fit to have the same Y rating as the standard ones. I'm guessing it has 18s so they would cost about 3.5k each. Non runflats about half of that.
There's no reason you'd have to fit all 4 at once but because of having narrows and wides and directional tread you can't rotate tyres, so you will likely replace the rears more often.
The other big worry the general public has is the turbo. Use good oil, don't hammer the car when it's cold, chill for a bit when you're almost at your destination etc and it should be ok. In the event it does blow it would probably cost around R25k so if you're happy to live with that risk then it's not exactly a problem.
The other costly item would be the 8 speed ZF gearbox but these have proven to be pretty good reliability wise. BMW insists that the gearbox oil is "for life" but what they really mean is "for the duration of the motorplan". Some people replace the oil and some don't. There's a local branch/dealer for ZF that can always have a look and possibly do it. Expect about 8k.
Also at ~100,000 some shock replacements might be expected soonish. Also expect around 8k.
As for the price it does sound like it might be a bit high but then I haven't done much research as I'm not in the market for one, so obviously look around. Completely ignore "book value" as no BMWs ever sell for trade/retail or book value. If anything find out the trade value and subtract about 20-30k for a ballpark figure on a 1 series.
Personally I would not bother with any third party insurance/maintenance plans. If you've got 100k now and you're worried about the above mentioned costs then stick 15k in an account and deposit 85k.

I'd stay away from any M series BMW, the owner could very easily have been the sort to hammer it and spares for certain parts are astronomical. For one just imagine the condition of a 8 speed steptronic gearbox pushed to its limits one too many times and the repair bill thereof. Wouldn't be surprised if R100k wouldn't be too far off.
Nice enough car but at the price and risk not a wise choice, unless potentially throwing big bags of money into a black hole is something you wouldn't find painful.
That being said if you knew the previous owner and his driving habits it may be a slightly different story, ie less risky.

With it being out of motor plan, if something goes, you'll potentially be paying a few tens of thousands.
The chances are though that you'll drive it for a few years with no serious issues at all, and get a reasonable trade in when you move on. It's worth making sure that if something does go wrong, you've got a bit of cash set aside to get it back on the road ASAP - nothing worse than having it off the road and you're stuck for transport and don't have the cash to get it sorted properly.
It's a nice car, and if you want to drive one, buy it (after doing all the checks with BMW), and enjoy it.

Though a nice/decent vehicle.
My vehicle will soon be 7 years old.
Guess what? Though the model/brand are not known for it. A part costing approx R30k excluding labour, needs to be replaced. Thank goodness the maintenance plan extention, cost R18500, is covering the whole lot.
Obviously the maintenance plan cannot be extended beyond 30April.
It has covered 3 services, 1 of which a major service. Full set of brakes all round and now this. Fully synthetic oil is not cheap
I will be selling the vehicle soon. Either privately or as a trade-in. It was a lovely ride, but if anything like the wonderful auto gearbox should develop a problem... I could be in for a bucket of hurt.
My suggestion to you would be:
Take a look at what various repairs COULD possibly cost, add 20% to calculate for future pricing.
Then decide if you have that value put away, or handy to pay out on a moment's notice.
While my next car will be nice, I am also looking at what spares would cost and the availability thereof.
That combined with looks will make me consider
