I would love to get some input on an ADSL line problem i have been having for about 6 months now..

PROBLEM:

Everyday my internet drops off about 7 times randomly for about 1-3 minutes each time. :wtf:
When the internet drops, adsl and data light remain on as normal (on router)
When internet is offline, Telephone is still working normally with no line noise at all.

STEPS TAKEN SO FAR:

Firstly i replaced my router with a new one
Replaced ADSL line filters
Replaced telephone cabling in house
Just had modem connected nothing else, and internet still drops

Tried testing internet with other ADSL accounts, and different routers, same problem
I have been using MWEB uncapped for the past 2 years with no issues
Called mweb, they positive this is a ADSL line fault (They can detect every time internet drops)
No errors with the uncapped data account, on mweb side.

Telkom have come 3 times, changed the DSLAM at the exchange
Changed the telephone loop from the house to the box outside in the road twice
Checked no line errors detected on their side

I have done just about everything I can, Telkom are scratching their heads and dont know where the problem is.

So i am hoping some suggestions on what else could be done or tested?

Much appreciate your advise here
Frustrated ADSL user.... :(

Do you have any other devices in the house connected to the phone line that do not have POTS filters between them and the phone line? Phones, fax, alarm?

Check the line voltage with a meter. It should be between 48 and 54 volts DC.
How far is your house from the DSLAM?
Have you tried a different PC?

Maybe there is a leakage to earth somewhere

I have customer in Constantia whose house was hit by lightning. His internet became intermittent. Upon calling, I found the LAN port on the PC to be intermittent. If the PC was rebooted, then it worked for 5-8 mins. Since it was an embedded LAN connection I told him to replace the motherboard, but he said I am trying to rip him off. His daughter called this morning accusing me of damaging his LAN port since it worked until I got there, but now he had had to spend R 2000 on a new board. When I mentioned about the lightning, she said I was talking crap and hung up the phone

There are only 2 phones with an adsl filter on each one. The voltage is around 52 volts DC on the line.
I have tried a few different notebooks, same problem :/
I think the closest is the Steenberg Exchange on Military Rd, so not that far from me.

Definitely IS a line fault somewhere, all notebooks and PC's are working 100%

Strange log - that looks more like stats?

Logging will normally show events line by line, and should show status changes on the line/internet. You need to check if the line is dropping causing the internet to drop or if the internet is dropping whilst the line is still stable. You mentioned the DSL light stays on which indicates the line is still connected.

The fact that you have tried different accounts, rules out authentication issues.
You have tried different routers, rules out router issues.

SNR and attenuation rates?

Nvm not reading.just ignore me.

Just a wild question. Are there any devices like kettles etc that are near where the router is or where the cable enters the property?
Switching a kettle on can affect the noise on the line causing it to drop.

Regards

Tim

Hi Tim

The router is sitting on a desk, near my notebook. I have tried different routers as well as connecting the router at both the other 2 telephone points in the house to test.. same result..

I did hear once someone had an issue with ADSL, every time the electric gate opened :/ . But this isnt the case...
The search continues

Ok well that is something else eliminated that might have been a simple cause. Don't have anything else to suggest at the moment. Your Noise and Attenuation are OK. What is really strange is that the lights stay on but you report MWEB says the Internet dropped. Not sure how that happened.

If you have tried every thing time to disconnect all your telephone wiring in your premises and connect your router to the cable coming in from outside, this is the only way to make sure you are not getting a reflection from one of your extensions.

Why not just by a R50 pci network card? :erm:

been testing my afrihost 1GB free account since 1pm this afternoon and it hasn't dropped off :/
I will be convinced its mweb if by tomorrow same time it hasn't dropped off

If you take the router to someone else's house, does it work ok?

BTW. Your router log should show something like this, which should help in troubleshooting this issue:

Wed, 2012-08-22 18:48:02 - Doing disconnect
Wed, 2012-08-22 18:48:02 - Exit.
Wed, 2012-08-22 18:48:03 - Failed to get ip address for interface ppp0
Wed, 2012-08-22 18:48:05 - Adsl is disconnected
Wed, 2012-08-22 18:48:36 - Adsl is connected
Wed, 2012-08-22 18:48:41 - Initialize LCP.
Wed, 2012-08-22 18:48:41 - Plugin pppoe loaded.
Wed, 2012-08-22 18:48:41 - PPPoE Plugin Initialized
Wed, 2012-08-22 18:48:41 - Plugin pppoe called.
Wed, 2012-08-22 18:48:41 - Enter: tdb_store.

Cant find a log. according to mweb the dsl is dropping off. they can see it on their side.
It just dropped off now again with my afrihost 1gb account..

I really don't know what else to do now :(

What is your router make?

Have you got a different router that has good logging? Remember the router is the device closest to what ever is happening, and might hold all the right information.

This is where a Cisco device would be handy :). Debugging is fun...

It's telkom , their **** copper is faulty somewhere along the line!
They cant even diagnose their own problems.

I am currently using an SMC router, i was using a new TP Link ADSL router which i sold.
But getting another one next week, they provide better logging I know that
