Need some feedback on Tivo please. Thinking of getting it. Would appreciate any feedback, positive or negative. Please also state where you bought it from. If you live in Bloem and have a Tivo, pls pm me ASAP. :D

I love it. It has completely changed the way I watch TV
Well worth it
Take a look at the tivoza forums. There are suppliers that will sell you a configured tivo in ZA

what tivo
The real thing :D

To see just how user friendly and intuitive the TiVo is, take a look at the Quick Tour.

For all things TiVo related, it's best to visit the TivoZA site and forums.

Below are some of the more interesting threads discussing the comparisons between the TiVo, HTPC's & the PVR:

Can one use any HDD inside a Tivo or does the device limit you to a specific maximum size?

The TiVo uses a standard IDE hard drive (i.e. not SATA). It allows for two drives to be connected and has no maximum drive size limit, so if you really wanted you could connect two Seagate DB35 750GB

The "Recording Time" guide explains how many hours of recording time you can expect to achieve based on the hard drive size.

We (the missus & me) love our Tivo to bits...it's made watching TV an absolute pleasure, and it even makes DStv seem slightly better value for money. And one of our favourite shows was "introduced" to us by Tivo as a suggestion.

I bought the Tivo from EkSys in the US and had my tame pack mules bring it back for me. Bought a 250 GB hard drive locally.

In summary: Buy a Tivo :)

bought mine on EBay last year for +- R1100 including shipping and taxes. It works like a charm once you set it up and you save the R50 a month extra for the DSTV PVR...

I'm also interested in getting a TiVo. Just one question; if you have a normal DSTV decoder, can you watch one channel and record another?
Thanks.

No, you'd need DualView for that.
There are ways round this. Get a dual LNB (the horn thingy attached to the dish) and run another cable to a second decoder.
You can also get a card splitter and transmit the codes around the house to another set.

With a second decoder wouldn't you need a second smart card and subscription too?

As Syndyre mentioned above, you need a DSTV dual view decoder to be able to watch one live channel while recording a different channel. That said, you are able watch a recorded show while the TiVo is busy recording and if you have a TiVo network card you can watch something else on your PC/Xbox.

Thanks for the reply, I am very interested, sound like a shlep getting hold of the hardware but worth the effort... :D

There are two guys selling the hardware locally, "tivoshop.co.za" and "TiVo Resellers". It does cost a little more but they set everything up for you and guarantee the unit is in working order so it has it's benefits.

Had a quick look at your 'tour' on the TivoZA site - what functionality is lost by using the Tivo in SA? (series record) How does one update the EPG and how often must this be done? If a network card is added, can it update the EPG automatically?
What about a wireless network - can this be configured?
If i have a PVR I assume i can record on both the Tivo and the PVR on different channels at the same time ?
