I would like to connect to a wireless network over 200m away from my room, I am in a hostel at Campus and would like to acces the internet through that wireless network, i know this is possible because my friend's laptop is able to connect to that wireless network when he is in our IT building and configure some proxy settings and then he is able to surf the internet of he's laptop. Well i have a desktop computer and i also want to connect to that wireless network but that network is round about 200m away from my room. Is it even possible to connect to that wireless network that far from my room, and if its possible will i be able to surf the internet like my friend did from he's laptop?
Thank you for taking the time to read this , any help would be highly appreciated!

dont think its possible buddy firstly any wall will block signal....trees etc etc and then ontop of that 200m???? thats way 2 far unless there is a "repeater" somewhere along the line .....and the IT building probably has their own wireless router ,which i take is very close to u ......and then even then if the wireless signal is protected or goes thru a proxy u still buggered unless u get the deatils from ur friend .....so things are looking grim my friend

Not possible with the built in wireless on your laptop no. install external equipment and you have a chance. Depending on the AP.

Get a Netgear WG111T dongle. It's got amazing range.

I'm just not sure where you can get it locally, I got mine from a buddy who bought it in the UK.:D

i will be able to get the details to go on the internet from my friend the only problem is to get a device that can pickup that signal up from 200m away and that the signal will be good enough to acces the internet, my budget is around R1200
