unshaped doesnt mean it does or doesnt support p2p! It would appear you don't understand what unshaped really mean!

as for the rest of your ranting - take a deep breath - repeat till you calm down dear! ;)

Quite

What does shaping have to do with support or lack thereof of P2P?

Exactly my point!

p2p & shaped/unshaped has got buggerall to do with one another.

My query is simple. Does it or does it not support P2P on the Neotel network.

If it doesnt support p2p their product is quite the lemon - to me anyway - but my gut tells me it includes.

I would certainly hope so...

rph72: Where in Great Westerford are you? I'm on the bottom floor. Saw them laying some Neotel fibre into the building last week.

They put cables down last year sometime, around May/June I think. They tore up the whole sidewalk (on main road) and laid all the way through (under the bricks) the parking lot into the building by the security boom.

Put my name down, no coverage in my area yet but have also been waiting for TELKOM since Jan.

Neotel, just give me internet please, you can keep all the other stuff and I will pay for it separately if needed.
Bundles are merely a way to dupe the consumers and you know it.

@Neotel: Kindly stick your SMS bundles (un-needed), email service (useless) and "free" voice minutes up your arse and give us cheaper internet instead.

Your value added services (which likely cost you nothing in the long run) are of no use to those of us that just require internet access. Bundling your service with useless bloat in order to justify the price won't fool everyone.

In comparison to the offering overseas, it definitely is not cheap, but bear in mind we only have one pipeline to international bandwidth. If you keep up to date with the latest news there are upwards of two to three international cables that will be landing in South Africa, sea-based and land-based. The moment that happens, the you'll see huge drops in price. My only concern at the moment is that the speeds they are getting during the testing phase are all well and good, but wait until more people are on the network, and then we will see if the cost is worthwhile.

But really, what isn't to like about 15GB unshaped at 2.4Mbps for R700, incl. SMS facilities, telephone calls, etc. Telkom doesn't even really offer uncapped to consumers, and if they do, they don't even advertise it! Really, if Neotel can offer uncapped at less than a grand, why can't Telkom that has a far bigger infrastructure and all the expertise and contacts!

I ain't gonna complain just yet!

From these prices ,R399 for a starting package:eek::eek::eek:......Sure going be a long time till Neotel comes to the number Telkom has ( subscribers )

They lay fibre into buildings if you go for one of their Enterprise products, its basically for companies who want dedicated bandwidth, rather expensive, but by comparioson Neotel is cheaper than IS and Telkom. I know I have been getting quotes for a 1meg 1:1 line.

At least neotel is forward thinking, having laid fibre to a customers premesis it would be a matter of hours if not minutes to get bandwidth upgrades, unlike Telscum where you have to wait a couple of weeks for a techie to visit an exchange.

Sigh, can't we put a massive sticky in size 22 font all caps that just says that Neotel have a true broadband offering without any phone device/sms's etc. which will come in time.

This service is for people looking to replace their Telkom lines as well as get an ADSL replacement or dialup upgrade in the process. They are not just meant to be another broadband provider, they are the SNO.

er um we have two fibre cabes, SAT3 and SAFE.

Also SAT2 was used for bandwidth, but its measured in mbps, so its really a joke and I dont think they use it anymore, perhaps someone can correct me.

Then there are various sattelite links (Internet Solutions), but of course they dont really perform well up against fibre.

Seacom is supposed to come online sometime in 2009. This I presume will bring down, if only marginally, the cost of bandwidth. If that is the case, will those savings be passed on to consumers who signed a 2 year contract?

Also what happens to early adopters who later decide they would much rather have Neotel's faster WiMax offerings? Can they cancel their contracts and opt for the WiMax offering instead or are they stuck with their contracts until 2010?

Forgive my ignorance, but how would the network be unshaped and not support p2p?

I have to say the uncapped unshaped for R999 does very appealing. But a few things worry me. I dont believe it will truely be uncapped.

Eventually P2P will be restricted during work hours, soft caps implemented... etc etc. As more people sign up for it.

Wireless sucks. Period. Doesnt matter what technology you use, its never stable. I was on Megawan a few years back and even tho the peak speeds were fantastic (was getting upto 800kb/s), there were constant timeouts, speeds varied GREATLY. Gaming sucks.

You will never beat a cable connection.

Im looking forward to Neotel's ADSL connections - ESPECIALLY uncapped

I agree that the offer of free neotel-to-neotel calls and smss are not appealing to me in the least. I dont even know anyone that I could call. I dont want to replace my voice service. I just want a faster internet connection with more usage for a bit cheaper than what is currently offered by telkom. Surely they did market research and surveys into their offerings: i would have told them that the voice portion of their offer would be secondary to the internet connection. Try to offer an internet connection that maximizes speed and use and minimizes price.
