Neotel upgrading some users to WiMax?

Evening All.

I would just like to clarify the following:
The information provided and relayed by the call centre agent is entirely incorrect and untrue.

There is no link between the 2 technologies, Wimax and CDMA.
They each use a different infrastructure and therefore carry no definitive similarity between them excepting for the “wireless” portion.
Coverage is not interlinked and neither is the equipment used to access the 2 networks the same either.

Neoflex is part of the CDMA network, WiMax is a self standing network infrastructure network.

Please feel free to drop me a mail ([email protected]) if you wish to enquire more about these networks.

Thanks

Hugo

Thanx Hugo. Thought I'd wait for your response before I dis that call centre agent ;)

Haha, funny thread. How will NoTel determine if someone is a high end user when many of the 15G users battle to do a gig or 2? One will only truly qualify if you don't really have any problems. I too would have liked to download lot of files. I also did not have any problem paying R80/GB for additional data. But I mostly battled to get to 5GB. So, looking at the stats I was a weak user, probably not worthy of a WiMax upgrade/migration.

BTW, my life is a lot easier now. I don't worry about internet anymore. Vodacom is as stable as a rock and will compliment my new ADSL when that is installed.

When you have a headache you drink an aspirin. You don't change from salamander juice to bloodroot extract and expect it will work better. WiMax over a crap network still equals a crap system.

Ok, still no confirmation receipt from the Neotel termination department, just phoned them and they say my outstanding amount for May is the normal R999 - this means that they have just totally ignored my termination request. The call centre agent cut me off half way through my enquiry, while she was busy trying to figure out what was going on, this is not too serious as this is the kind of service I have come to expect from Neotel(hence me terminating my contract). What does annoy me though, is that they are probably now going to try and charge me for June as well, and that trying to sort this out is going to cost me time and money - any advice on how I can fast track this - apart from calling their call centre?

Ok, so to bring this back onto topic, I am a Prime Unlimited user whose speeds have now made it practically useless. Is WiMax pie-in-the-sky hang-on-a-minute attempt to keep customers or is it an option now? Because if its not available now, I shall be ordering a Telkom line today. Anyone know anything definite about WIMAX?

It has been indicated that WiMax will only be available for users after the bandwidth monitoring tool is up and pay-as-you go becomes available.
We all know how long we have been waiting on that. I stand corrected.

My question is: How long until users are switched over to WiMax ? I was under the impression Neotel wanted to move us up the value chain asap.
Please Neotel, give us a good idea of when this will happen as I think it is very bad business practise to announce new offerings without a timely follow through.

Is this only going to happen from June onwards ?

June is too long to wait while I get 190kbps and pay R999 a month for it... I guess I will be leaving Neotel as well. They say they have 50 000 clients. Not for long...

Hi Kasbah and users.

Would like to claify your post Kasbah, not sure where you got the information, prepaid is scheduled (last update) for June, and the bandwith monitoring tool is pretty much ready, in fact, i'll make sure to create a new thread for this Tuesday evening. We're already working on finalising the process to move the high end CDMA (EV-DO) customers across to WiMax technology, but you have to understand the depth this requires. It was only decided rather recently, and there is plenty of work requried to make sure the transition is smooth without interference or break in connection to the users moving across. I will definately post a new thread on this as well closer to the operation implementation stage.

@ Hugo

Can we have some sort of definitive date on when this eagerly awaited WiMax option will be implemented. I spoke to you on the 21st of April and you said around 2 weeks. I already have my Telkom ADSL up and running and unless there is clarity on when the WiMax will be implemented I have no choice but to cancel my Neotel Prime Unlimited connection.

Please advise ASAP.

Thanks
Martin

I was advised that WiMax would be about the same speeds as CDMA. So, in theory, I can pay R999 a month and maybe get 300-800Kbps with a theoretical max of 1.8Mbps. Or I can get ADSL and pay R899 and get 4Mbps and close to that consistently. With possible upgrades to 10Mbps soon.

Secondly, I beleive MWeb and co are buying bandwidth from Neotel and reselling it to us cheaper than Neotel is selling it to us directly. WTF? If Mr Neotel (the guy in charge, not Hugo) is not wanting to compete for 10 000 users, then I won't bother him with my business.

A simple solution to me would be for Neotel to realise, "Oh crap, we are offering a crap service that is now more expensive than our resellers. Lets drop the price." Like Unlimited Prime for R500. Unless they are actually looking for more resale of bandwidth business than direct to end user. In that case, they could save themselves all the hassle of clients and call centres and technicians, and stop selling a crap service and focus on their resale of bandwidth business to the likes of Mweb.

It seems like an easy decision to me, which is why I have ordered ADSL and will be cancelling Neotel. Neotel doesn't seem to want the business, and their "solution" is supposedly just as crap as their problem.

I get all my information from you Hugo, that is why I am asking.

Don't give excpectations to customers.
Prepaid is launching later than the bandwith monitor currently.

Honestly I feel the bandwidth monitoring tool might as well be dropped, too long a time has passed with many dissapointments along the way. Competition R having uncapped!

World Cup is up in 31 days time, we all might as well strike for a day with no ISP usage and make the headlines and get*demaaand* what we want.

Prepaid is now also supposed to be up and running seen as June is just 3 weeks away.
Any chronological idea when WiMax will be up please ?

It's Tuesday Evening.

PS: Please get an Engineer onto PN320

Evening MartyMarts.

The 2 weeks was the start of the process to finalise all requirments for the transition move from CDMA to WiMax for the high end users.
We're already well into the project plan, and its not long now, i cannot force you to make a decision, but i can tell you its worth the short wait till we implement the move across.

Thanks Hugo. The proposed move to WiMax is the only reason I haven't canceled my Prime Unlimited connection as yet. Obviously this needs to happen sharpish as it would make no sense and be a waste of money for me to have an ADSL and Neotel connection at the same time.

Will there be a new contract (and device fee) for the move to WiMax or will it just be a continuation of my existing contract?

When you say worth the wait, what is to be expected? I anticipate less congestion, but what kind of speeds?

Details i can confirm as we progress with the project
This i will confirm now - continuation of remainder of contract, no extra charges or costs for you to carry, not even on service fees.

The tower (PN 188) where I normally connect at full signal died today or is offline, I am connected on tower PN 340 with 1 or 2 signal and with very slow speed. please send tech out to check tower

We got slight IP challanges currently, Cisko on it.

thanks, Will we need other modems to connect on WiMax or what equipment do we need and will it still be uncapped?

As said before, the equipment will be installed at our own costs.
And the billing will remain the same as your current subscription till end of your contract period.
This is only for Flex 15g, flex 10g, prime unlimited and prime 10g users. As i understand it.

And no, you will have the same cap you currently have as per above listing.

I have flex 10 gb flex, what will the speed performance be like?
