Netflix not making dedicated Apple Vision Pro app

Netflix Inc. isn’t planning to launch an app for Apple Inc.’s upcoming Vision Pro headset, marking a high-profile snub of the new technology by the world’s biggest video subscription service.

Rather than designing a Vision Pro app — or even just supporting its existing iPad app on the platform — Netflix is essentially taking a pass.

Don't blame them to be honest. Developing an app would consume resources for a device which as of now is only sold in the US.

That said, Netflix has always skimped on Apple features like integrating with the Apple TV app and universal search. Apple TV users lives would be infinitely better if all streaming apps integrated with the TV app and universal search.

Probably not woke enough for them.

Wouldn't stop them from creating a new VR tier - bit short sighted from Netflix.

I wouldn't know but as per the article they did develop an app for the Meta Quest but it hasn't been updated in years.

I don't think blood is great between Apple & Netflix ... it's probably politics / commercials

Even if blood isn't great as you put it, you don't alienate a large portion of your userbase because of it. Netflix, as an incumbent, will get away with this because the Vision Pro is prohibitively expensive at the moment and consumers don't know where and how this sort of tech places in their daily lives.

As for me, I wouldn't use this product (other than maybe fiddle with it) even if given to me. It's just too impersonal for my liking and I'm not into gaming where I can actually see a use case for it.

And stuck at 480p, it isn't great.

Doubtful in this case, Netflix doesn't really support vr, and the apple vision pro for now doesn't seem like a device with either a large target market or one where people can wear it for a longer movie session (weight).

Where do you get that though? Any actual source or just shitposting/speculating?

It's not like either corp is small fry that can be ignored.

Netflix would have surely ran the numbers/did a cost-benefit analysis.

Netflix don't do Netflix interactive and they were late with GUI updates and other features.

And when I searched, many people say the reason is Apple ... and Netflix designers aren't over the moon .. and I can just work out that things aren't great with Netflix & apple based ?

This lack of a revamp seems to be a deliberate choice. One of the iOS designers behind the redesign announcement responded to some questions about the tvOS app in a tweet, informing users that they had “been giving it some love”. No further details about an update for the Apple TV Netflix app were given before the tweet was deleted, and users have been suspicious since.

But how big is that larger portion of userbase ?

They were later with ad free Netflix and can't do Nertflix interactive, and from the links the GUI is an issue because Apple want to interfere etc . I don't think it's rosey

@Dolby Netflix interactive has been canned.
For the past seven years, Netflix has been gradually releasing a collection of interactive, choose-your-own-story games within the Netflix UI, known as Interactive Specials. According to a recent report, we may not see many more of these, if any, in the future.

Where do you get the idea that it is Apple's fault? There are many apps with superior interfaces on the Apple TV (Max, Hulu, Paramount, Disney - US App etc)... This is just Netflix refusing to invest in their Apple TV app and has been the case since Apple debuted their own streaming service and corresponding app. I know this because I've had an Apple TV since the second generation and back then the Netflix app was head and shoulders better than other apps. This is obviously not the case any longer.

Now I can understand Netflix not wanting to plug into the TV app and universal search because they'd want network traffic directed through their own app and not Apple's but to say that the Apple TV app is lacklustre because of Apple interference is a stretch, even by your standards.

This has more to do with Apple now being a competitor in their market and as far as I can tell Apple are winning the original programming business.

That said, Netflix cannot ignore iPhone users as they do Apple TV users due to the sheer number of people who access Netflix via the iPhone. The Apple TV numbers are pale by comparison.

Netflix is pushing intensely hard on their gaming division, I expect this year they're gonna drop loads on more dev & licenses.

I've never understood Netflix venturing into this category. I'll happily accept them not paying any attention to the Apple TV app if they keep this game nonsense away from the app.

… I never said it was though? I never said most the things you said I said?

But more than likely, it is an Apple fault. I’ve never been one to subscribe to the notion that everything wrong with Apple is someone else’s fault .
