Netflix versus ShowMax

I bought a 1month subscription for showmax and was quite surprised about the content. Has allot of afrikaans children stories that I used to watch as a child. Much better than most of the crap for children on dstv etc... I will now buy an extended subscription. I stream via airplay from my ipad to apple tv.
 
Netflix SA for me - DNS unblockers way too much effort. No Roku app for Showmax and I really like Netflix's original series.
 
Argh. I won a 90 day ShowMax trial and now it would appear that I can't watch it on my tv. It's not a smart tv, so no app. And ShowMax doesn't have an app for the XBox One. In fact, it doesn't support the Edge browser either which is also the only browser on the XBox One.

So for me Netflix is the clear winner. Even with less shows when using the SA version.
 
Been watching Mythbusters for 3 months now on NetFlix SA, Finished season 5 last week but see no more seasons are appearing like they usually do after a couple of days?
 
Many people here stating they would love to try ShowMax except for the lack of console support (including myself).

Wondering how many of us there is? Perhaps that would get Multichoice to wake up? Prob being naive about that though...

I mean I have :

- Xbox 360
- XBox One
- PS4
- Raspberry PI

All of those devices can play Netflix yet none of them ShowMax !?
 
I subscribe to both Netflix and Showmax. I run both services on a mygica ATV582 device and stream with a 6 Meg uncapped data package

I have found that Netflix's SD (480p) picture (the mygica cant display netflix in HD) is a better quality than Showmax's 720p HD picture.

Personally I prefer netflix for movies and Showmax for TV series.
 
We signed up for showmax a month ago after enjoying a month free trial. Really happy with it so far especially for the kids content. The movies are a bit limited but we are finding plenty of series to watch and there is a fairly steady supply of new content. Some of our old favourite shows are not present so you have to be open to trying something new that is on showmax but so far so good.

My smart TV does not seem to work with the app (never buying a HiSense TV again) but we have a media centre laptop right next to our TV so we have just been playing on the laptop and using the HDMI cable to get it on our TV. Its easy enough and even my 5 and 7 year old kids can now get it playing completely on their own.
 
My HiSense smart TV does not link to any official or unofficial HiSense smartphone app meaning the only keyboard is the remote. It is so painful to type anything in its just now worth it. Smart TV's only work with either an external keyboard or at least being able to type on your phone. Its easier to use the laptop and just HDMI over to the TV.

Anyways, like I said, not a fan of HiSense, next time I will get a better brand. My mistake for accepting a price that was too good to be true at Makro I guess.
 
My personal experience using both Showmax and Netflix SA.

Netflix streams are way smoother and do not cut out while Showmax does this all the time. Tried various ISP's on my 4mb and sorry to say but Showmax has some weird stuff happening. I personally would of used Showmax instead of paying $$$ to Netflix but if the streaming service is buffering or cutting out the whole time I will pay R50 extra for effortless streaming.

Maybe because you have a 10MB line and he has a 4MB line…

Might be the 10mb line or you are one lucky bastad! :)
I have a 4mb line and had major issues with Showmax. I tried Vox, Axxess, Afrihost and TI (All capped packages) and Showmax was not stable but Netflix ran like a dream.

I know of more people complaining about it on the MYBB's forums but hey if you don't have issues its good news!

Works fine on LG WebOS and Samsung Smart (Series 6 & 7) (os before tzen?). Also tried and tested on iOS, tvOS.. works well. Afrihost (capped account) with a 4Mbps line.

One thing I hate about Netflix is that you cannot easily rate limit unlike Hulu and Showmax which basically allow you, the user to decide or just push to max. This is a problem when you have multi users in home but ok.. i am grouping streaming applications or devices and limiting bandwidth so that e.g. notebook doesnt get any bandwidth.

IIRC Netflix dynamically adjusts quality to suit your line speed whereas with Showmax you have to use the bandwith capping option under settings.

In an ideal world we would all have access to reasonably priced >20MB fibre - we can but dream :sick:

Get a chromecast and ditch the laptop, at least you you can use your smartphone as a remote instead of fiddling on the laptop.

How's the sond from the laptop?

I had an old sinotec LCD that I purchased in 2008 that ran perfectly on Showmax. Only problem was having to continuously refresh on the display settings of Google Cast.
