Netogy Nova Feedback

Got my NOVA yesterday to replace my one Ematic box. Have to say, I'm quite impressed with the AV1 support. Colours on my Hisense also seem much more vibrant with it compared to the Ematic. I really think that my Ematic had a hardware issue, but will still keep it as a backup device. Will factory reset it once Android TV 10 is available for it. But for now, the NOVA is running like a champ and everything is buttery smooth, no complaints :)

Awesome, had you are happy.

I got a Nova today (having tried a Xiaomi Mi TV Stick 4k a few days ago but returned it due to certain issues). Well I'm getting the exact same issues again with the Nova. Tried lots of different options and tests, but let me try and summarise and see if anybody else experienced similar and maybe found a solution:

Playing through TiviMate (or opening in external players like VLC or Nova Video Player) or using Televizo, for any channels that are FHD 50fps (or 60fps), the video stutters constantly while playing. Play a FHD channel at 25fps (or 30fps), it's smooth and no issues. Even UHD channels at 50fps play fine.

In fact, through Televizo you can see the stream info about the current channel, and the fps varies while playing between 35 and 45fps or so, never reaching 50fps, so I suppose that explains the stuttering. For 25fps channels, stream info displays steady 25fps.

The thing about the Nova and Mi Stick 4k is that they are newer devices from this year. I also tried the older Mi Box S device using TiviMate app, playing the same FHD channels, and they played smoothly, but showed only 25fps (instead of 50fps). Also tried the native Android TV on a Hisense TV, also with TiviMate, same FHD channels tested, and smooth playback but at 25 fps. Both Mi Box S and Hisense had no issues playing UHD channels at 50fps, go figure.

I did come across some info while searching for a solution that seems to indicate that the exo player framework that certain players (like TiviMate) are built on has some bug when it comes to playing FHD at 50fps. But given that I get the same issues when opening from TiviMate in external players like VLC and Nova Video Player, I really don't know.

Anyone with similar experiences or suggestions?

A thought- do the devices on which they work, have AFR ( Automatic Frame Rate matching )and is it enabled ?

My initial thought is that they are "frame doubling" 25/30 FPS content. They could also be dropping similar frames to try and reduce the data rate, and thus achieve a more streamable result.

The devices have a screen resolution setting which can be auto or a selection from various options. TiviMate app also has AFR setting. Tried various combinations between device and app, and none I tried made a difference.

This could well be, given that Televizo reports the varying frame rate as a stream plays. Not sure why the device and/or app struggling to play it smoothly though if this is the case.

Must check Televizo out ... , I know for a fact my internet is not great, especially in the afternoon/evenings.

It may be that the anomaly you are describing, has been masked by my inconsistent internet.

Hi all. Tried to google but can't find a definitive answer. Can some tell me what format an external HDD has to be to connect to the Nova? Want to load local files. Also is Kodi the go to for playing of local files or is there a better media manager / player? (Don't have a Plex server - it's for the folks). Thanks

For playing local files, I use VLC or NOVA Player. These are files on a USB external drive or from a shared drive over the network.

Plug it in, I think the Nova should be able to handle NTFS, otherwise ex-fat.

My 10TB came in exfat and gave me issues on the Ematic. NTFS sorted that out.

@killerbyte

I see this model dropped the AV port any reason why it was removed in this new model ? .Just asking as I make use of 2.1 pc speakers rather than using the tv's crap sound . Do you know if the Ematic AGT419 will have a hardware upgrade as well or is the model that replaces it.

The NOVA replaced the AGT419.
I was not involved with the hardware selection process, so I cannot advise why the port was dropped.
