network hog myth. uncapped proper usage != piracy.

No mweb are clever because they know if they let all of us loose with nzb's and torrents majority of people will be going full tilt 24/7 thus affecting their network, so they allow us to download while keeping the network intact for the average users who just want fast browsing and email.

They could pull an afrihost and start limiting at 30-60gb instead. I highly doubt a pirater would get pissed off with 200kb/s and not 400kb/s although knowing some pirates they will get pissed off :D.

Once we start down that road we have no more freedom. The internet is the ultimate symbol of freedom. <--- this is most likely going to start a whole other debate. Screw you conservative gov's for enforcing your views on us.

Actually, I really don't care what you think about it. It is none of your business what I do with my internet connection. That is between me and the ISP. Mind your own business.

Actually, by commenting in this thread, you've made it our business...

I am quite ok with 200KB/s even 100 for that matter. But I do mind getting 4.5KB/s on afrihost after only a few gig's - i have changed to mweb now - so far it's been sweet.

Now imagine if in Sweden, home of thepiratebay, THIS can happen what lies in store for us down the line!!

And there is sweet F-all you can do about it! :D

In fact... I don't really need what I download most of the time. I have to delete a lot of it. I just to do it to P off the whiners and because I can. I paid for it... it's my line. I'll download whatever I want. ;)

So can anyone break down to me how a non pirater would download 360gb in 3 months, i am still waiting on that? Necuno does not seem keen to answer it so maybe someone else has some insight.

How much does it cost to stream hd movies off the net? Must be way cheaper to stream them directly off your hdd :D.

World of Warcraft:
You could spend your time just sitting in Dalaran parading around in different clothes while chatting to people.
Upload = 215 bytes per second (In Dalaran on a lightly populated server (3000 people registered on the server))
Download = 4500 bytes per second (In Dalaran on a lightly populated server(3000 people registered on the server))
= 4,715 bytes per second
= 37,720 bits per second
= 2,263,200 bits per minute
= 135,792,000 bits per hour
= 132,609 MB per hour

So .. lets play in Dalaran for 4 hours a day
= 530,437 MB per day

That's roughly one GB every 2 days.

play for 20 days a month, and that's 10 GB playing World of Warcraft.

Now, put 2 people on the same line and it's instantly 20 GB a month playing a really simple part of the game.

When you play in 25 man instances, the usage is roughly 5800 bytes per second, peaking at about 8000 bytes per second.

So, if a person plays in 25 man instances 3 times a week one person will use 13GB a month.

Now add the other stuff mentioned in this thread, which are often done while playing the game.

lol. well some of us just don't sit around to entertain. i do actually have to attend work. i've already laid out in my op why i could use more than a normal joe would.

Thanks, that answers the question :p

Hello, my name is Gary and I am a compulsive downloader, I don't know why I do it, but I have to use my bandwidth :D

Whatever you are using it for.... it is in our interest to keep the pressure on the ISPs to provision more bandwidth.

This is exactly the war that is going on in the USA right now. Comcast and other internet providers want to be able to throttle and control users habits... The FCC wants a completely neutral and constantly growing internet. The FCC tried to stop Comcast from throttling users (as a regulator should), so Comcast fought back in the courts. The FCC has come up with a massive broadband expansion plan that will reward smaller ISPs for their growth. That sounds like a brilliant plan to me. The Internet should be protected as far as possible to be allowed to grow and expand as much as possible. This in turn will spur innovation and entrepreneurial spirit.

If you are happy with your ISP controlling how much internet you use, then you are a fool. You should be pushing the limit as much as you can to show them that there is more demand.

I don't currently run any business on the internet other than communicating with customers by e-mail, but when the day comes that I want to start a super duper website and make millions of dollars on my unique idea... I want to know that there will be enough cheap bandwidth in this country for me to make a truckload of money from the internet.

Right now the only way I can do that is as a consumer.

The whole legal/illegal debate is also pointless. If there is a demand for unlicensed content... it should show the content creators that there is a marker for their commodity. They should be jumping at the chance to sell their stuff on the internet.

Hollywood wants to cut off sales of DVDs to Spain because of massive piracy. They "lost" $350 million dollars of sales in Spain due to piracy. Hello, whose fault is that. That $350 million dollars could have been yours if you were the one distributing the content. Wake up and smell the coffee.

Your downloading habits have a direct bearing on the future of the internet.

Well i think overseas companies have introduced a limit gary because we in SA cannot comprehend how people can download 6-10tb a month dude. I am all for downloading but 6-10tb??? LOL omg that would be insane. You could literally download every single thing posted on nzb's and torrents in a month.

Would make rendier's 20tb setup look pathetic :D

Ok so I am going to start on a new project today. I am basically doing a review of a large client and then going to build a simulated environment on my recommendations to test what they will need. This exercise will include the following:

Windows 2003 server iso (estimated 1.5GB)Trial so will have to redownload in future
Windows 2008 Server Iso (estimated 2.4GB)Trial so will have to redownload in future
SQL 2005 ISO (estimated 1.5GB)Trial so will have to redownload in future
SQL 2008 ISO (estimated 1.5GB) Trial so will have to redownload in future
Fedora (estimated 4GB) Always use the latest version so will have to re-download in future
Fedora Updates (estimated 2GB for a minimal install) this has to be done EVERY time I reinstall the OS for testing (i break stuff i rebuild etc)
Opensuse (Estimated 4.5GB) Always use the latest version so will have to re-download in future
Opensuse Updates (estimated 2GB for a minimal install)this has to be done EVERY time I reinstall the OS for testing (i break stuff i rebuild etc)
Zimbra (estimated 600MB)
Sharepoint ISO (estimated 1.5GB)
WSUS (small but updates estimated at 8 to 10GB for above products plus xp and vista updates - may even be more)
Office 2010 beta (estimated 2GB) Trial so will have to redownload in future
Vmware (600MB but I already have this installed so won't bring this into the calculation.)

Once done with my testing I have to bring these into the large testing environment for load testing, integration testing and some other things that is my secret ;)

Total downloads = 33.5GB

I have obviously left out things like xp and vista from downloads as trials are no longer available.

I reckon once I am done these machines will be approximately 24 to 30GB in total.

So my total usage would get to between 60 and 70GB for ONE client. Yes I do reuse "some" of the ISO's but even if there is a minor release update out I will use that to stay as technically accurate and on the latest possible versions.

Now take into account I do this for about 20 to 30 clients per month. You do the math.

P.S. I have streamlined some of these processes to conserve bandwidth hence the reason I average between 120Gb and 150GB per month. As you can see this is quite possible.

All that shows is that there is massive demand for a certain content type on the internet. If the content owners were clever enough to monetize even just a portion of that, they would be making massive profits.

(didn't Rendier say 200 tb? I have 20 Tb... and I don't think that is a lot).

If I could selectively pay for series I want to watch I would do that online and download the epi's that I have paid for. RSA tv sucks badly.

I do about 10 to 20GB of epi's online but I am more than willing to pay for the priviledge should the creators make it available as such.

So my total usage would get to between 60 and 70GB for ONE client, what did you use before uncapped? Must have cost a fortune wow. You do that every month warch for 70 clients?

Well i do pay for series, just i watch them like 3 years before they hit dstv :D.

20 to 30 clients. I was creative with how I got it done. I would for example get people with international access upload the NZB's for whatever iso's they could find and then use local only bandwidth to grab it off the news servers. whole bunch of buddies have telkom accounts so I would get to use those when their international got capped. Managed to get away (semi cheaply) for a while. Also figured out ways to move the WSUS db between test servers etc.... when you are wedged into a corner you have to make a plan. That's why I was so excited when these uncapped packages came out. Finally I could be self sufficient ;) I still try and use the news servers for ISO's as much as I can to preserve international bw for the gamers and the browsers.

Yea, but the catch here is, if you play WoW as extensively as that, you don't have much time for anything else. Surely you're not streaming HD content while 2 people in your household are playing WoW? Surely you're not downloading content in this time either.

The fact of the matter is WoW with all its Voice extras are using less bandwidth per hour than P2P/Torrents/HTTP_BULK downloading/HD Streaming would. I don't think anyone is saying 30GB usage -spread out over a month- is insane here either, so even playing WoW as extensively as that you don't hit 30GB. Obviously if you're not somehow downloading stuff in the middle of night AND somehow getting time to consume this "while you're in front of the PC" content , i still don't see you hitting 100GB or ever considered a "network hog" here..
