Ok so I am going to start on a new project today. I am basically doing a review of a large client and then going to build a simulated environment on my recommendations to test what they will need. This exercise will include the following:
Windows 2003 server iso (estimated 1.5GB)Trial so will have to redownload in future
Windows 2008 Server Iso (estimated 2.4GB)Trial so will have to redownload in future
SQL 2005 ISO (estimated 1.5GB)Trial so will have to redownload in future
SQL 2008 ISO (estimated 1.5GB) Trial so will have to redownload in future
Fedora (estimated 4GB) Always use the latest version so will have to re-download in future
Fedora Updates (estimated 2GB for a minimal install) this has to be done EVERY time I reinstall the OS for testing (i break stuff i rebuild etc)
Opensuse (Estimated 4.5GB) Always use the latest version so will have to re-download in future
Opensuse Updates (estimated 2GB for a minimal install)this has to be done EVERY time I reinstall the OS for testing (i break stuff i rebuild etc)
Zimbra (estimated 600MB)
Sharepoint ISO (estimated 1.5GB)
WSUS (small but updates estimated at 8 to 10GB for above products plus xp and vista updates - may even be more)
Office 2010 beta (estimated 2GB) Trial so will have to redownload in future
Vmware (600MB but I already have this installed so won't bring this into the calculation.)
Once done with my testing I have to bring these into the large testing environment for load testing, integration testing and some other things that is my secret
Total downloads = 33.5GB
I have obviously left out things like xp and vista from downloads as trials are no longer available.
I reckon once I am done these machines will be approximately 24 to 30GB in total.
So my total usage would get to between 60 and 70GB for ONE client. Yes I do reuse "some" of the ISO's but even if there is a minor release update out I will use that to stay as technically accurate and on the latest possible versions.
Now take into account I do this for about 20 to 30 clients per month. You do the math.
P.S. I have streamlined some of these processes to conserve bandwidth hence the reason I average between 120Gb and 150GB per month. As you can see this is quite possible.
